| World_of_Andromeda08-10-07, 01:02 PM | Hello fellow forum users: I have been thinking about Kara-Tur, as I have found what I've heard to be interesting about this campaign setting. Since it seems that WotC will not be creating any material dedicated to this setting, I was thinking about getting the AD&D PDF books. However, I wasn’t sure what would be required for this campaign setting. I know that there is the Forgotten Realms Eastern Realms box set and the 1st edition of OA. I’m wondering, though, is the 1st edition of OA needed to have the picture of Kara-Tur? Is the Forgotten Realms box set enough of a book to understand that realm? Also, if it’s not too much trouble, how do you rate the Kara-Tur information in Dragon #315? I apologize is this information has been requested before. I didn’t find anything in the FR forum, nor in the OA forum, except for the Kara-Tur: Re-dux (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=798477) thread. However, I haven't had a chance to read that monster thread yet  Thanks for all of your help! World of Andromeda |

Also, if it’s not too much trouble, how do you rate the Kara-Tur information in Dragon #315? The 1e OA book isn't necessary, if you're mainly looking for Kara-Tur background information. It only includes a 2- or 3-page summary of the setting, which is fleshed out in later material. Start with the boxed set. If you want to go from there, get the modules. In particular, OA1 Swords of the Daimyo and OA2 Night of the Seven Swords provide historical and cultural background on Kozakura, OA4 Blood of the Yakuza and OA7 Test of the Samurai on Wa, OA3 Ochimo the Spirit Warrior on Shou Lung, and OA5 Mad Monkey vs. the Dragon Claws on T'u Lung. OA5-7 are all available as free downloads from WotC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads). You can also expand your horizon to the west with The Horde boxed set (also a free download). A series of three adventures was published for that setting. There were a number of Dungeon adventures published when the setting was still active, and some OA material in Dragon. The recent Dragon Campaign Classics articles in issues 315, 339, and 351 are good, but are mainly 3e tidbits that update or add to previous information. If you're playing OA 3e, get Dragon 318 for the 3.5 updates. Dragon 349 contains a fairly comprehensive update of the Horde setting, and an associated Web supplement is free to download from Paizo (http://paizo.com/paizo/news/dragon#v5748eaic9kbw). |
| World_of_Andromeda08-10-07, 03:21 PM | Occam, Thank you for the information/links, it was quite helpful. Not to sound stupid (though I'm sure I will in a second), what exactly is the Horde? |

I’m wondering, though, is the 1st edition of OA needed to have the picture of Kara-Tur? A small picture of a daily life in Kara-Tur. If you want more details about the Eastern Realms (regional maps, culture, politics), then get the boxed set. Is the Forgotten Realms box set enough of a book to understand that realm? I mean the Kara-Tur boxed set. Also, if it’s not too much trouble, how do you rate the Kara-Tur information in Dragon #315? A pretty decent primer. Also, offers adaptation to the rules in the new OA book (by James Wyatt). |

The Horde boxed set covers the lands immediately to the west of Kara-Tur, and to the east of Faerun, primarily populated by tribes of pseudo-Mongol horsemen. There's a lot more fun stuff in there, and the download is free, so it's definitely worth checking out. |
| World_of_Andromeda08-13-07, 03:38 PM | Thank you for all the information, Occam and Ranger REG. I decided to get the box set for Kara-Tur from Paizo, along with Dragon 315 and Dragon 318. Thanks again! |
