I looked at the katas, and loved what they could do, but getting them..... My head hurts......

You apparently need to spend two points of "something" to learn them. I say something because I have never heard of them before. Basically, I don't know how you actually get these katas aside from going to an actual dojo.

I think you're looking at the L5R RPG rules. The d20 ones only have an XP cost.

Generally, kata are only good for duels and/or contests of some kind, pretty much any time you know exactly when you're going to fight and have ample prep time. Outside of that, they're completely useless.

What?

Thats what I said!

You appearntly need to spend some type of points, lets call them Asian points. For water strike kata, you need two Asian points, The book never states where the Asian points come from, or how you get them.

Its like going up to a store, getting some food, and when you go to pay the shop keeper, he tells you the total comes out to 57 Kogotoshas, and you say, whats a Kogotoshas, but the shop keeper doesn't say a thing.

Which book is this kata d20, yes I was using the L5R ones.

The d20 rules for kata are in Way of the Samurai, which is a dual-stat book by AEG (meaning it has both stats for d20, and the 2nd edition Legend of the Five Rings RPG), the L5R RPG stats are printed in a different color than the d20 stats in that book, so you shouldn't get them confused.

...and several prerequisites - kind of like feats.
And simply houseruling them to function like L5R 3e kata (double prep time to be able to activate them at any time during the day) they are perfectly usable - quite broken in some respects:

Standing on the Heavens allows you to add your skill rank in 1 High skill to your attack rolls in the original system. Fine. nice bonus, nothing fancy.
d20 version lets you add your skill modifier in a high skill to attack rolls. you can easily get +10 to +15 on attacks with this kata.

it shows that the authors were not terribly steady with d20 mechanics when they converted the L5R mechanics.
