| UFCCHAMP07-10-07, 09:09 PM | I am new to this board so forgive me if this is in the wrong place. I am starting an asian campaign that is based on martial arts movies. Its not so much a historical setting, as it is a tribute to chop sockey cinema. In that spirit I am going to have a pantheon of ten dieties who are named after and based on the greatest martial arts actors of all time. My question is, who would be your top ten choices? I already have made sure that Bruce Lee gets the number one slot if only because he is the most famous of all martial arts actors. I definitley want to include Sony Chiba in there as well. So just let me know your top ten nominations for martial arts dieties (remember the women as well) and your reasons for including them. Thanks. |
| narukagami07-10-07, 09:21 PM | I nominate Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat. |
| heretic88807-10-07, 09:24 PM | Bah, narukagami beat me with Chow Yun Fat. :P I would nominate Jet Li and Jackie Chan. :) |
| Professorpain07-10-07, 09:26 PM | I second the nomination for Michelle Yeoh and the nomination for Jackie Chan. What do you guys think of Tony Jaa? I know he is new to the game, but he has been putting out some pretty amazing stuff. I would also like to advise against including Jeane Claude van Damme in your pantheon (unless he is somekind of evil, half useless divine being). |
| Lord Gwydion07-11-07, 12:03 AM | It's not quite "chop sockey" but Toshiro Mifune should be in there (maybe as a demi-god if not a full-fledged member of the pantheon). I'll also nominate Maggie Cheung. |
| AAB07-11-07, 12:48 AM | How about Donnie Yen? |
| Thakowsaizmu07-11-07, 02:11 AM | So here is my list, followed by my überlame reasons why they'd be the top ten: Zhao Wei, because she is a hottie! Zhang Ziyi, again because of hottness! Jet Li, coolness. Chow Yun Fat, übercoolness. Jackie Chan, because he is just a must. Chow Sing-chi, he makes and stars in awesome movies. Chiu Chi Ling, because of his awesome hung gar skills! Yuen Wah, great martial arts actor! Yuen Qiu, not so hott, but an awesome actress. Lam Chi Chung, great actor and no one would suspect his kungfu. And we know all of these people have done wirework before! Long live Wuxia! |
| Hochiu07-11-07, 09:48 PM | I'm definately going to have to throw in my hat for Tony Jaa. The work he does in some of his movies is excellent, although I actually prefer a lot of the "10-minute fight" enemies he has in them for their more unique style. And Chuck Norris, but not because he's the subject of all these ridiculously stupid facts on the webernets, but because I think it would be amazing having a Texas Ranger as a god in an Asian Pantheon. That and he trained under Bruce Lee. |
| Zaver07-13-07, 08:14 PM | They aren't actors but Wong Fei Hong and Fong Sai-Yuk are rather legendary figures and have movies and shows about them. Wong in particular being the main character in Once Upon a Time in China and Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movies. |
| CaptKillern07-14-07, 01:52 AM | That and he trained under Bruce Lee. Are you sure about this? I have looked around the web and in some books i have about Bruce Lee, and the only mention of Chuck is that they met at an exibition in 1970 and Bruce invited Chuck to be a villian in Way of the Dragon in 1972... no mention about Chuck Norris studying under Bruce Lee. Chuck was already the Professional Middleweight Karate champion 2 years before he met Bruce Lee and held the record for 6 years... The fight scene from Way of the Dragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytsnfQsncoA |
| Thakowsaizmu07-14-07, 04:49 AM | If you are going to have Wong Fei Hung, then you should also include Ng Moy. After all, she was very important in the CMA world. And Bai Mei, every one needs a good bad guy! |

The fight scene from Way of the Dragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytsnfQsncoA I remember reading in a biography of Lee that Chuck Norris was one of his famous students. Lee had a habit of finding people who were already rising stars (For instance the kickboxer Joe Lewis) and improving his own reputation by making them his students. I could be wrong about this. Just what I read. Have not found too many well cited biographies of Lee or virtually any other matial artist. P.S. Did anyone else hear a rumor that Jackie Chan admitted to using stuntmen in some of his movies (prior to his "retirement" from stunts). My wife heard it through the Thai rumor mill, and I didn't know if I had missed it or not. She also heard, from the same source, that Chan is known to be a homosexual in Thailand, and has been seen with several younger men. |
| Lord Gwydion07-14-07, 09:24 PM | As for Jackie Chan, he has admitted on an interview with Japanese TV (forget which network I saw it on, sorry) that for a few of the movies made in America, the studio forced him to use stuntmen for a few of the more "dangerous" stunts against his will. That's how he explained it. Take that for what it's worth. As for him being gay or not, what does that have to do with anything? This is the D&D message boards, not the National Enquirer or People Magazine message boards. :bored: |

I am not passing judgment on him if he is. Just wanted to see if anyone else had heard anything. Lighten up. |

It's just better business for them not to let things like what happened in, I think it was, Operation Condor go down. Which ever movie it was, Jackie messed up a stunt cracked his skull and almost died. It happens to a stunt man it's bad but production goes on, it happens to the star and the studio has problems. It's actually kind of funny to see Chinese actors talk about all the different things that happen in American movies, like getting days off and only working X hours. |
| madmonk07-19-07, 12:20 AM | How can your pantheon exists without GORDON LIU!?!?!? He would be the god of bald monks! He rocks in the 36th chamber of shaolin trilogy, and he is just cool in both kill bills! (he is the leader of the 88crazy whatever, and also master Pai Mei) |
| DX205207-19-07, 01:02 AM | I 2nd chuck Norris, just do it realisticaly (as in no "destroy anything by snapping a finger) |
| Hochiu07-20-07, 12:33 PM | Like I said, Chuck Norris. From his Walker: Texas Ranger days. The only god who's obviously not part of the same racial paradigm and wears a cowboy hat. |
| Thakowsaizmu07-20-07, 07:15 PM | When the eyes of the Ranger are upon you... |
