Ninja equpiment? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-21-07, 07:06 PM First off, I am not a Naruto wannabe. One of my new rogue characters has had training with many different masters, and I would like a ninja to be one of them. Beyond shuriken, what other kinds of stuff might ninjas use? I'm thinking more along the lines of alchemical/mundane stuff, stuff I can pull out of my backpack every once in a while and say "this is a ninja tool that I learned to use from my master way back when", without making it look like I'm trying to hard to be a ninja in my black body suit and asian themed names for my moves.

well there are basics like rope, acid, pyrotechnics, poisons, and caltrops. another device is the nekode which is a weapon/climing tool helpful for infiltration. metal wire, or string can be useful as a trip wire for marbles or acid in a jar, or to drip poison down.

remember it's probably going to be cooler (i think) to improvise weapons or specialy craft wrapons for certain situations. There are no real exapmples for these as the are based on the situation.

also, try to use a tactic of 'evade and kill' for gaurds so your party can move up with you and they don't get left behind, and stranded without magic or backup.

Also while many deride the Complete Adventurer Ninja, several of its abilities can be nice to play around with for stealth kills. I have one that has made several kills that wouldn't have worked without it.

There's always the Special and Superior Items in OA (page 78), like eggshell grenades, flash paper, liquid smoke and sleeping fire.

Rokugan's "Way of the Ninja" has a lot of goodies as well.

And you must always remember, ninjas are like cockroaches, for every one you see, there is a thousand more in the walls.

06-15-07, 11:14 PM The ninja is a very flexible class. You can play duck and multi scout to **** off people by stacking skirmish+sudden strike. Or you can go Zabuza and invest in some fighter levels and purchase yourself an exotic killing blade. Or you can feel special and check out Dragon magazine #354 (April 2007), which has some Ninja substitution levels for a water, earth, and fire nin. Issue #342 (April 2006) also has some jutsu feats that are fun to use such as Rabbit Prince Jutsu-which basically casts an expeditious retreat on the nin. What I found extremely useful to building a successful ninja was the Complete Scoundrel. My prefered way to build a ninja was to focus on steath and invest in Craft (poison) and Craft (trapmaking). Curry powder bombs were a very good way to get my sudden strike on a group of enemies and not spend precious ki. Another good way to **** off a DM is a ninja/sorcerer. Go invisible, run next to someone, and cast that shocking grasp with no need to worry about the attack of opportunity- bcause you're invisible dude. Ninja/ monk is useful for unarmed strike plus the slow fall, which I still don't understand why the ninja doesn't get that ability.

As for equipment... A short bow, dagger(s), and a shortsword should be all that you should worry about. If you wanna waste the feat slot, take the ninja's short sword from the Oriental Adventures book, itits sheath can double as a blowgun. Speaking of, the blowgun is also very good because of poison darts, as well as delivering other nasty surprises. Slings also work extremely well to chuck potions at people so they explode all over them. Ooey-gooey fun!

Also keep your eye out for any interesting Quentissential books. This series is the best thing you could ever have when making a character. Just pick any one up and feast upon the usefulness!

And you can't take Craft (alchemy) unless you have spellcasting abilities.

06-16-07, 09:06 AM Get Way of the Ninja if you can find it. It's a d20 product for Rokugan d20. It's got some cool ninja gear in the back. OR just look at it and try and copy or remember the gear. Ninja used things like grapling hooks, Kusari Gama, Climbing Claws, blowguns, folding bows, their ninja sword sheaths were usually longer and hollow so they could be used as a blowgun or snorkel. Also the reason why the crossguard or hilt is so big and square was so they could use it as a short step ladder. They could place it against a wall and step on the hilt part and go up and over.

However the Ninjato is considerd to NOT be a real ninja weapon. Why would you use something so obviously a ninja tool when your trying to not be noticed as being a ninja? Also keep in mind that ninja swords aka ninjato are crappily made. Ask Heretic about ninja grear. He knows a lot. I dunno if he'd know about gear but it's worth a shot. Or just use gear that seems very espionage. It doesn't have to be ninja specific.
