OA 3.0 or 3.5? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-25-07, 04:03 PM I don't play in an OA campaign, but I like to use as many resource books as I can. The OA book has much content that seems useful and interesting even outside the campaign. The only problem I find that there is some content (such as feats) that overlap with other sources, and yet the descriptions conflict. To be very specific (for example) the feat Earth's Embrace is completely different than the desciption in Complete Warrior.

Am I reading a 3.0 book?

Oriental Adventures is a D&D 3.0 book. It was updated in the Dragon magazine 318 (which can be found here (http://paizo.com/dragon/products/downloads/318&source=search)). It's only available as a PDF...but, it's got a lot of cool stuff contained within the whole magazine. It's worth the price.

As for comparing this to Complete Warrior...I can't help you at all. I never got any of the complete books.

The Samurai from CW is like a fighter who has had his manhood stolen from him, dropped in garbage, chewed up by a dog, and then tossed in a wood chipper.

All around largely ineffective considering he has only one good save, no feat selections, and complete and total railroading into leading to a character who is always yelling and dual-wielding.
Compare to the OA samurai, who can be varied, but can still rely on the katana and wakizashi.

The most recent Oriental Adventures is a 3.0e book. WotC never got around to making Oriental Adventures book for 3.5e (except for the Dragon magazine article in issue #318).

Supposedly, WotC updated the material in several places, like in the various Complete series. While they got most of the material (like feats) right, they got the classes wrong, or at least not to many of our satisfactions.

Yeah, but WotC forgot to include that disclaimer label next to the class description. Now somebody in the "Kara-Tur: Redux" thread (see Forgotten Realms General forum) want to use the CW Samurai in that massive project. I responded to that person with an objection.

It hasn't been updated to 3.5e, AFAIK. But doesn't mean it is outdated. The same goes for Great Throw feat (found in the OA errata).

Not to derail, but I for one was glad to see you objections in that thread. I had a friend who had Complete Warrior, and I hated the samurai in that book.

Overall, although OA is 3.0, it should be useable as is in a 3.5 game. The update in Dragon 318, though, makes that book even better, in my opinion.

10-27-07, 01:22 PM There shouldn't be a problem using the OA samurai in the Realms and elsewhere. In fact a recent Class Chronicles article particularly deals with placing the OA classes in a FR campaign (basically, expect to see them along the Golden Way and in the Shou expatriate communities).
