| ridgerunner02-04-08, 01:34 AM | I am thinking of starting an Oriental Adventures/Rokugan campaign with my group. We have played in Forgotten Realms but I wanted to try something different with this new campaign. I was thinking of having each of the clans be composed of different races, e.g. Dwarves for the Crab Clan, Drow for the Scorpion, Human for the Lion, Elf for the Phoenix, Gnome for the Dragon, Half-elf for the Crane and I'm not sure what for the Unicorn or where to put the haflings, maybe the Mantis. Has anyone tried this? Any opinions? |

You could have just about any race as the Unicorn, such as an exotic race you may wish to introduce from another Setting or a Homebrewed race. Also remember there is no reason to include all of the PHB races, if there is one (or more) you don't want, leave them out. In a campaign I am working on Half-Elves cannot belong to a Clan and are usually Eta. I didn't bother with several of the PHB races, and thus some of the races have more than one Clan. |

I read in the campaign section and found it. Probably I read it a while ago and it sunk into my subconscious only to come out years later. The Lion was human, elf were Cranes, half-elf the Phoenix, dwarf Crab, gnome Dragons, halfling Scorpions and half-orcs were the Unicorn. I haven't decided yet if I will follow that or as suggested above come up with my own races. |
| cvla Wolf03-01-08, 07:25 AM | mmmm.... i think halflings doesn't fit well as Scorpions, their nomadic nature is more appropriate for Unicorns; Drows are the real Scorpions!!!! |
| Dragonhelm03-06-08, 01:37 AM | Drow for the Scorpion Love that idea. Perfect tie-in. :) I've always liked the idea of putting the D&D races to the L5R clans. It's not a perfect fit, but it's fairly good. I was thinking recently about how this would look in 4e... Crab - Dwarf Crane - Elf Dragon - Dragonborn (natural fit) Lion - Human Phoenix - Eladrin Scorpion - Tiefling (though, again, drow is a natural fit) Unicorn - Halfling Thoughts? |

When incorporating various PC races into Rokugan (though still keeping the settings integrity of being mostly human), do you ultimately change the weapons being used for the Daisho? As the Gnomes practicing Niten fencing with the wakizashi and the tanto, would all small races do the same, or would there be an apt and able way to use different weapons? Perhaps the Dwarves having a Battleaxe and a handaxe for their daisho, though not carrying the same respect from Rokugani Samurai as races that at least tried to emulate the Rokugani Daisho? Elves, due to their ancient mysticism, seem like they would best be at least partially reminiscent of a Chinese/Japanese Rokugan Hybrid. Carrying two masterwork swords, a Jian (long sword) and a Duan Jian (short sword). This would ultimately open up most Elves into the picturesque sight of the Blade Dancer PrC in OA. And that's really the only thing I can think of for other races in the Samurai class. And I'm astonished by my lack of imagination on the subject. |
