| yellowdingo10-06-07, 06:58 AM | Okay...... and this is related how? Are you making a historical game based on 7700BCE China? Whats the point here? Conceivably it allows you to develop a stone age oriental adventures. With Domestication of Rice, Neolithic Hunter/Ricefarmers living on the edge of a Swampy Jungle basin that will soon flood with seawater. Basicly Barbarians in a primitive Oriental Setting living an increasingly rural (and Domesticated) life. Then you can have Barbarians wading through Swamp to raid tha settlement of Ricefarmers... Agricultural Wealth of a Primitive Community CROP............................PER ACRE Millet...........................30 Bushels Rice............................40 Bushels 1 Bushel=50LB This can be about the rise of Warlords with Jade Axeheads for their axes. Primitive Assassins (ninja using natural Poisons weapons). The Rise of Heroes/Villains who will be the gods of a Civilization. |

| Kayli10-07-07, 11:04 PM | Seems like an interesting concept, have you made much thought of arms and equipment availability? what about classes and races allowed? would this civ predate the advent of humans? after all meny game worlds have elves or their other kin as the oldest race and then follow it with humans ariving much later. |

I supposed you'd have to ask whether the ricefarmers are even likely to be elves...Are the elves more likely the "Barbarians" raiding beyond the boundaries of their little jungle/swamp empire? |
| Kayli10-08-07, 11:50 AM | That is an interesting point yellowdingo. Maybe, the ricefarmers, are an even older race then the elves, who are little more then roving, hunter-gatherer's in their social development stage. they attack, and conquer the older society. and, as is sometimes the case, subsume their more advanced culter into their own. Thus becomeing the elves we know today. as for class lists, i would start with the npc classes. I would drop both the aristicrat, and the commoner. every one else would basicaly be a warrior, with a smattering of adepts. As for the PC classes, hmm. I would keep the fighter, ranger, druid, and sorcerer, off the top of my head, and dump the rest. also there really shouldn't be any written language, or if their is, it would have to be a cross class skill for all classes. What about equipment? this would be a neolithic setting, so no mettle and no pottery (still about 3000 years away), and probably no armor. also, probably no real currency, mostly barter and trade. As for magic, spells would either have to have no spell components, be restricted to ones with no spell components, or have the component lists radicaly redesigned. as for potions, there is no glass blowing or pottery yet, so that would have to be redesigned. I know there is something about alternative potions in CA, lets see ...Magic fruit or skull talismans might work. and for scrolls, one could use Macrames. |
| Senko10-15-07, 02:45 AM | Interesting although I'd definately add barbarian to the list of class options and I'd drop fighter as it implies a degree of sophistication I'd expect to be missing back then. This gives you hunter/gatherers (ranger) and raiders (barbarians). The former finds food for their tribe while the other takes it from others. |
| Kayli10-15-07, 09:25 AM | what about Monsters? does any one have any suggestions for monsters that would be appropriate? I suppose you would face a lot of animals and magical beasts. and of course the barbarian elves. orcs and goblins would be out since they are younger races. I would probably remove kobalds too. I guess there could be a few precurser Monster races. |
| Senko10-15-07, 09:44 AM | The dragons (oriental obviously as opposed to chromatic) would probably be around still as it would oriental monsters (Gaki, spirits, kappa maybe) and you could probably sneak in a couple of the planar ones depending on how close you wanted your worlds spiritual afterlife to match the oriental ones as they don't really have the inner/outer plane environment if I remember right. You'd have evil hengeyoki (and good ones obviously) perhaps a few alien races (from beyond the stars). If your using source books outside the core maybe some of the more unusual/rarer critters from them as "elder monsters" who are dieing out especially if you go with the precursor race theory or as an experiment by evil sorcerers. Shipwrecked travellers from another plane/time perhaps a zoological ship that got stranded he unleashed a plague of bizzare creatures on the land and a couple of adventures revolve around tracking them down and containing/killing them. |
| Ikyotojin10-15-07, 10:09 PM | Bakamono are perfect for something like this. They are essentially the goblins and orcs for the OA settings and work well. Considering their description, I would easily see them in a setting for neo-lithic adventures. I'd also advise reading this site: http://www.eskimo.com/~knapper/ There is a list of links on making stone tools, which can give you ideas for weapons and items that people would have access to. Swords are right out till you reach the bronze age, but axes and knives are common. The comment about armour is almost right - Most pre-metal tribes had wicker and hide armours but those would be VERY rare as the practice of dedicated warriors is not common. Hunters, yes. They are vital and every tribe needs them and they would be the only "warriors". The amount of time needed to develop anything other than heavy hides to keep warm (and the side effect of protecting one form claws, bites and spears) would be to resource intensive. Magical components for a lot of spells are actually easily swapped for similar items of rarity. Natural volcanic glass, hard to find shells... the ancient people's used a lot of odds and ends that they considered to be powerful magic. Be creative and make your players LOOK for stuff. ;) This can lead to some interesting encounters. |
