I was wondering, how would one do a crossbetween D&D, D20 Modern and D20 Future? (Or star wars d20 or other Sci-Fi RPG) It would be one hell of a mix for sure, but it could also result in genocide. How would you do it?

Presumably, in order for all of them to intermingle successfully and realistically, we would need some method of travelling from one to the other. The most obvious ways are
They all exist on different planets
Time travel usage
They all exist in extreme isolation on a single planetNaturally, #2 is the easiest to work, and it means we'll be able to keep a consistant tech throughout.

So, we've got time travel, how to prevent genocide travelling through the degenerate ages? Well, we could go terminator, say that the travellers can only take living things back, naturally this allows natural weapons but excludes crossbows, greatswords, firearms, and lasers. For continued travel, the obvious solution is that the device used is in multiples stashed throughout history in different places either naturally or by some external force.

Another option using the time travel idea is that the players maintain their characters, but their characters are sent back through history into pre-carnations of them from the present. This way, we keep the same statistics, but technology still doesn't transfer, as well as the possibility of the characters influencing their own fate at some point after another. After all, there are over 6 billion humans on the planet now, so the odds of 2 looking identical are very high, just add in how many look-alikes there could be throughout history. This method is especially suited for the cursed-in-the-future storyline, where the party members are confronting some evil scientist or alien technology and get supplanted through history and must find their way back through time to stop the same technology or scientist (Similar to Blackadder Back and Forth, for example, the machines apparently seeks out incarnations of the Edmund & Baldrick's personages, but with a possession twist)

You kind of have to think how and if tech and magic would mix; urban arcana would probably help you a lot with that. I'd also say that D&D stuff will be a lot more powerful, having a much more viable way to heal damage than the other systems.

Without trying to start anything.. take a look at the settings for Final Fantasy VII, X, X-2, and (to a lesser extent) XII. There's a mix of all elements in those games, so settings CAN be made.

What you really have to do is figure out where your technology really is in capability (usually around current times), where your magic really is (moderate fantasy power, less than Dragonlance), and the 'sci-fi' elements would likely stem from a combination of the two.

I would suggest the following, at least as source material and references...

Urban Arcana: The d20 Modern basis for a standard mixing of genres with Fantasy and Modern.

DragonStar: The d20 D&D basis for a mixing of genres with Fantasy and SciFi.

It can be done, and it can be done viably. I am playing in a campaign where it works. The PCs come from Forgotten Realms, Magnamund (Lone Wolf), Star Wars, and d20 Future. Because of wormholes and dimensional rifts, we are all in Magnamund working together against the Dark Lords. The Star Wars characters converted from the Vitality/Wounds system to Hit Points. Star Wars force points and d20 Modern/Future action points both converted to Lone Wolf will points. Everything else remained compatible. That is the nice thing about the d20 system. None of the PCs are disproportionately powerful.

Tell ya what.. I'm not sure what the rules are here regarding these things, but I am doing some setting work on 'mixed' genres already. If you're interested, we can continue to discuss it here, though.. but it's still a WIP and I haven't decided on what I'm going to do with it. :)

Venificus: Hey, can you give me the VP/WP to HP conversion rate?

Edit: Wait, Magnamund? From the Lone Wolf series? Can you tell me how you got that into the d20?

VP/WP to HP converson rate? Use the VP dice you roll every level as HP, and don't worry about the WP.

Magnamund? Yes, Lone Wolf. Mongoose Publishing did the d20 version.

I've been trying to work on doing a DnD/Modern/Starwars mix and would be interested to know how you "mix" it up.

Hey!

I mixed D20 Star Wars, D20 Stargate SG-1 (AEG), D20 Modern, D20 Farscape (AEG), D20 Red Star (Green Ronin) for a short lived campaign (and would have allowed more).

I used D20 Star Wars as the base system and "normalized" the characters to that. I kept most of the skills and Feats the same, so no issue there.

It worked out pretty well. The players had a good time. I handwaved any problems and kept the game going rather than get bogged down in any rules arguments.

If you want more info, my .sig file contains a link to my 'zine where for the first issue I talk about my D20 Multi-verse Campaign.
