| teshen04-10-07, 07:32 PM | This is a 3.0 wizard prestige class that I figured I might fiddle around with... Yes, I know that things like the Magelord and the Harulaa Elder already something similar and do it better... I realize that now with certain 3.5 feats you can just about make something like this without a prestige class... and I know that this prestige class is rather boring and lacks flavor... I'm looking for ideas to make this prc interesting again, so without more of my usual rambling... Synthesist flavor text to be added Prerequisites Skills: Concentration 8 ranks, Knowledge (arcane) 8 ranks, Spellcraft 8 ranks Feats: Spell Mastery, Signature Spell*, Any one metamagic feat with a +1 level adjustment or higher Spells: the ability to prepare third level arcane spells *For those who are unfamiliar with the feat, Signature Spell allows a wizard to choose a single spell he knows with the spell mastery feat and to spontaneously cast it in place of other memorized spells as a good cleric spontaneously casts heal spells or an evil cleric spontaneously casts inflict spells. Lv BaB Fort Ref Will CL Features 1 +0 +0 +0 +2 | +1 | Epiphany (1) 2 +1 +0 +0 +3 | +1 | Eldritch conduit 1 3 +1 +1 +1 +3 | +1 | Epiphany (2) 4 +2 +1 +1 +4 | +1 | Channeled power (+1) 5 +2 +1 +1 +4 | +1 | Epiphany (3) 6 +3 +2 +2 +5 | | Eldritch conduit 2 7 +3 +2 +2 +5 | +1 | Epiphany (4) 8 +4 +2 +2 +6 | +1 | Channeled power (+2) 9 +4 +3 +3 +6 | +1 | Epiphany (5) 10 +5 +3 +3 +7 | +1 | Eldritch conduit 3 The Synthesist's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Knowledge (any) (Int), Profession (Wis), Speak Language (Int), and Spellcraft (Int). Skills: as wizard Skill points: 2 + Intelligence modifier Hit Die: d4 Class abilities Weapons and armor: A synthesist gains no proficiency with any weapons or armors. Spellcasting At every level except 6th, a synthesist gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a synthesist, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day. Epiphany The caster gains another application of spell mastery and the signature spell feat for a single spell of the listed level the character may cast. For example, Epiphany (1) could be used to learn and spontaneously cast a first level spell, such as mage armor. Epiphany (2) could be used to learn and spontaneously cast a second level spell, and so on. In addition, he gains one extra daily use of each spell gained from the epiphany ability in addition to his normal allotment of spells per day. Eldritch conduit 1 The synthesist may add metamagic feats to a epiphany spell he spontaneously casts without increasing the casting time. Channeled power A synthesist casts any epiphany spells as if they were stronger than normal. At fourth level, this ability increases the specialist's effective caster level by +1 for purposes of determining level-dependent epiphany spell variables such as damage dice or range, and caster level checks only. At eighth level, this ability increases the specialist's effective caster level by +2 for purposes of determining level-dependent epiphany spell variables. Eldritch conduit 2 The synthesist may subtract one level adjustment from the sum of all metamagic feats applied to an epiphany spell he spontaneously casts. For example, a wizard 7/synthesist 7 could cast a third level epiphany spell with enlarge spell (+1) and maximize spell (+3) added from a sixth level slot as opposed to a seventh level slot. This may not be used to reduce a casting below an adjustment of zero. This ability may be used at will. Eldritch conduit 3 The synthesist may subtract up to five level adjustments from the sum of all metamagic feats applied to an epiphany spell he spontaneously casts. This may not be used to reduce a casting below an adjustment of zero. This ability may be used three times per day. This ability, when used, supersedes eldritch conduit 2. ***** Edits: 4/12/07 Changed the wording of a prerequisite. Added a retraining option to focused talent. Removed a caster level at level 6. 4/14/07 Removed familiar loss prerequisite. Removed focused talent... since it's tied to the loss of familiar. 4/25/07 Lowered the skill rank and spell level prerequisites so that a wizard can get in at level six. Added a spell power feature for signature spells. Renamed signature to epiphany. Renamed efficient magic to eldritch conduit. Renamed signature power to channeled power. Renamed Signature specialist to Synthesist. |
| teshen04-13-07, 12:45 PM | Ok... If no one has any suggestions on mechanically changing the class, can anyone suggest name changes... Signature specialist just doesn't have any pop to it... :bored: |
| AngelLemmingThief04-13-07, 05:19 PM | Why the part about the familiar? It doesn't seem to gel with the rest of the class? |
| starfire31104-13-07, 05:24 PM | Signature specialist just doesn't have any pop to it... :bored: custom caster. Stupendous signature specialist spell slinger um yeah I really dont got anything. |
| teshen04-13-07, 05:57 PM | Why the part about the familiar? It doesn't seem to gel with the rest of the class? Orginally when I saw signature spell, I thought it could be a cool basis for adding a bit of sorcerer like spontaneous casting to the wizard... and a few of the friends I showed the idea said it was all gain and no drawbacks, and why would he turn his attention inward... so I came up with the partial favor requirement of the loss of a familiar. They liked the idea, so it stuck. Since the class still felt like all gain, I decided to take out a spell level... but now looking at it, the familiar thing should probably go. Stupendous signature specialist spell slinger um yeah I really dont got anything. *chuckles* Thank you starfire for that bit of alliteration... if all I get out of this post is a good laugh, then it makes it worth it. :D |
| teshen04-15-07, 01:19 PM | As a name, maybe Intuitive spell should substitute for Signature and Insightful magic for Efficient magic? And would it be overpowering to add a spell power feature at levels 4 and 8 for signature spells? |
| teshen04-25-07, 08:20 PM | :bump: Is it balanced (I hope)? Is it still boring (I hope not...)? |
