Imagine this: Sorcerer/1, Wizard/4 becomes an ultimate magus, taking 2 levels of it (Character level 7), and gaining fireball as a Wizard Spell. He qualifies for Elemental Savant and goes down that path, taking 10 levels of it (Character level 17), and then going back into Ultimate Magus for the last 3 levels of his non-epic progression. Would he be able to level up his Ultimate magus level for the purposes of raising his spellcasting level at all levels except 7 and 10? If he takes 10 full levels of argent savant and then goers back into ulti9mate magus for 3 more levels, what would his caster levels be for his 2 arcane classes? When he actually levels up Ultimate Magus again, how would I resolve it all? |
| Puca07-09-07, 02:46 PM | OK, little confused, but Ill give this a shot: At Character Level 5, you are a wiz4/sorc1 You cast spells as a level-one sorcerer (caster-level 1) and a level-four wizard (with a caster-level of 4). At your first level of Ultimate Magus, you advance your lower-caster-level class only*. You also ger Arcane Spell Power +1. So, at character-level 6, you cast spells as a second-level sorcerer (with a caster-level of 3) and as a 4th-level wizard (caster-level 5.) At your second level of Ultimate Magus, you advance in both casting classes, so, at character-level 7, you cast spells as a third-level sorcerer (with a caster-level of 4) and as a 5th-level wizard (caster-level 6.) Now, thats pretty clear. Your first level of Elemental Savant grants +1 casting, so you can advance as either a sorcerer, or a wizard. Not both, and not as a UM. (+1 level of arcane casting class advances classes that independently grant spellcasting; not classes that indirectly do so.) Assuming you apply the casting benefit of the ES to your higher-level class, wizard, you are casting as a third-level sorcerer (with a caster-level of 4) and as a 6th-level wizard (caster-level 7.) *You can use a feat, Practiced Spellcaster, to switch this. |
| Gray Scholar07-09-07, 08:42 PM | The elemental savant only loses spellcasting at levels 5 and 10; they get a spellcasting increase at level 1. (The argent savant doesn't get a spellcasting increase at level 1.) If you're asking if you can apply the "+1 level of existing spellcasting class" to the ultimate magus, I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Ultimate magus isn't a spellcasting class, it only enhances your already existing spellcasting classes. With elemental savant, you'd have to choose either wizard or sorcerer for the 8 levels which increase your spellcasting. Of course, Puca already said that last part. :) |

| AaronDireBear07-11-07, 11:14 PM | Ah nevermind then, i wanted to see if there was a way to get the ES to qualify for an additional full spellcasting PRC to dip into at level 17-20.... |
