| Light_Colonel05-23-07, 03:36 PM | Ok, the contestants: Assassin (DMG) - the tried and true, plain old evil Assassin. Imaskari Vengeance Taker (Und) - Don't have to be evil. But essentially just an Assassin. Slightly different powers make it slightly more interesting. Stonedeath Assassin (RoS) - Goblinoid only Assassin with the pretty flashy effect of turning their target to stone. Thanks to The Shaman for this - Dark Hunter (CWarrior?) - better darkvision, full BAB, 5 levels with +1d6 sneak attack and death attack. Teflammar Shadowlord (Unapproachable East) - Shadowdancer meets assassin. No SA progression, but death attack, some very useful abilities, including making full attack after a shadow jump, and the most ALDI spellcasting I've seen. Demanding (4 feats, casting/template/Shadowdancer levels), but can be quite powerful imo Shattered Peak Cultist (Lost Empires of Faerun) - killing mages is dangerous business, and these folks are up to it. For me it was the best, alongside with the Vengeance Taker (though I wish it would have a slightly better progression). Black Flame Zealot (Unapproachable East / Complete Divine) - combination of cleric and assassin, basically the DMG assassin with a continuation of the divine progression, non-good alignment and ways to make sure the enemy stays dead. Thanks to Lotus Crane for adding - Psychic Assassin (Secrets of Sarlona) - Replaces the standard Assassin's arcane spellcasting with an equal level of psionic manifesting. I am sure there are others, so please let me know which I have missed! Which do you think is the best? |

And are you looking only for official materials, or is home brew acceptable as well? In which case... | Alyss05-25-07, 08:30 AM | I still prefer the basic Assassin. He's straightforward and just geberally cool. |
| Ecalsneerg05-25-07, 08:34 AM | The Avenger (In prestige classes in the articles section). A sort of 'good' assassin, like a government sanctioned one. |
| The Simbul05-26-07, 05:41 PM | I prefer to combine them. One of my preferences for an Unapproachable East campaign is: human shadow-walker Rogue 5/Assassin 8/Teflammar Shadowlord 6; ECL 20; with Ability Focus (Death Attack), Craft Wand, Quicken Spell-like Ability (dimension door), maxed INT, and a pair of assassin's dagger style variants in (dual-wielded) weapons of choice. Two full attacks in one round is pretty nasty. |
| IntOblivion05-27-07, 09:58 AM | Definetly the combination of Rogue/Assassin/Shadow Dancer, allways worked for my pretty little killers in disguise :evillaugh |
| Duedaine05-27-07, 11:53 AM | is there a feat that makes death attack work on creatures that it wouldn't normally work on, ie undead? |
| Flay Crimsonwind05-27-07, 05:18 PM | is there a feat that makes death attack work on creatures that it wouldn't normally work on, ie undead?Or reducing the time to study? That'd be pretty badass! I'd go Rogue 5 / Shadowdancer 6 / Assassin 2 / Teflammar Shadowlord 7 A Fun lil combo I worked out a while back. Worked pretty well, and ironically enough was the part face, since none saw his "actions" otherwise! |
| NightOwl06-05-07, 12:11 PM | Or reducing the time to study? That'd be pretty badass! Goggles of Scrutiny (Dragon Magazine #330, p68) +2 to Search and Spot, 2 rounds to study for death attack instead of 3 Takes up the face slot Reqs: Craft WI, Clairaudience / Clairvoyance 12,000 gp |
| Encard06-05-07, 10:05 PM | Of those listed, I'd definitely say a Shadowdancer with a multipouncer build. Three or four full attacks against a flat-footed enemy, in the surprise round no less, seems a lot more effective than hoping your Death Attack DC is high enough. Alternately, the Soulknife could make a very nice assassin in some settings. At higher levels, you'll be able to do 15 (maybe more, I can't recall) Int, Wis or Cha damage in the first round - that's enough to drop most folks, and then you can coup de grace. |
| Nat_2006-05-07, 10:09 PM | artemis entreri :bounce: i think the slandered assassin is cool, but i wanna see a variant of it without spells, instead give him cool abilities or something... |
| Dex06-05-07, 11:04 PM | There's a class from Book Of Exalted Deeds: The Slayer of Domiel, who uses the assassin's skill set for good. Also, there's a Monk of the Long Death, who has a Death touch and other abilities that make him hard to track down. |
| Sleepwalker1366606-05-07, 11:08 PM | Cloaked Dancer (Complete Scoundrel) :D |
| Yosho06-06-07, 12:06 AM | You forgot the Gost faced killer from complete adventurer. Full BAB, etherealness, invisibility, and a will save death attack that you don't need to wait for. Whats not to love about this class? |
