Hello,I'm a 3.0 DM and I've got a problem.
One of my players,in the next campaign we're going to play in the Silver Marches, wants to play an assassin. However, given the campaign me and the other players have in mind (not to mention the fact that one of the PC is a paladin...),an evil character would be a great problem.

Is there a way to play a neutral assassin?Has anyone ever created an assassins' guild that is not evil? Can the assassins skill and powers be used by an assassin once he becomes non evil?

Thanks for the help.:)

Well, assassins do tend to, you know, kill people, and most paladins aren't quite enamored of the entire backstabbing business... But you could edit the class a little.

Aside from that, there's a little-known sect among the nearby Bedine of Anauroch that could provide some useful training. Is the character an arcane caster? If not, check the Shattered Peak Cultists in Lost Empires of Faerun. It's 3.5 but can be reversed engineered to 3.0 without much trouble imo. Arcanist/rogues might find some specialized training with agents coming from the Underdark (Imaskari Vengeance Taker, Underdark book), and these have been said to have begun a more active recruitment recently. Furthermore, in the East (Unapproachable East) there are two ways to get assassin's training with slightly less compromising moral ideals - the Black Flame Zealots of Kossuth serve to quell the Firelord's enemies, and the Teflammar Shadowlords are sometimes a bit less... callous. All of these can find a reason to travel to the Silver Marches, and could be willing to offer guidance... at a cost (although the Shadowlords are not likely at all to trust a stranger with their deepest secrets, and require quite extensive training beforehand). Alternatively, they could send one of their own agents to the Marches, instead.

I'm not sure if Monks of the Long Death (PGtF) could be non-evil. Again, you will have to adapt it to 3.0, but it shouldn't be that hard - give it the monk abilities and unarmed BAB (okay, technically you don't need to, but iirc ALL monk PrCs in 3.0 had the unarmed BAB progression), and it should be set to go.

You're the DM. Make a houserule that Assassins can be neutral if you want to.

Or add a simple RP requirement to an alternate Neutral Assassin class, i.e. they have a reason for killing other than money.

Have him play an Avenger (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070401a)- it seems to do everything he wants to do.

Whoa. That class is perfect for a good Assassin.

Thanks, Witch! Keep up the good work :)

There's some slight issues with the spell list though :D (A single spell) I recommend anyone who uses this class in their games to alter that suitably - the error is obvious, and so is the way of correcting it.

Perhaps you are referring to Magic Circle Against Good? :)

I think there's another spell, similar to it, that works to ward against Evil folk rather than Good. I forget the name though.

The Slayer of Domiel PrC, in Book of Exalted Deeds, is a lawful good Assassin.

x Atsettam:
Thanks, but my player wants to become an assassin only after some levels as rogue, because he view the assassin as someone you become, not someone you are from the beginning.

x The Shaman:
The Shattered Peaks Cultist and the Imaskari Vengeance Taker sound both interesting,I'll have a look at them.As for the othere prestige classes, the rogue of the party wants to be a waterdhavian,so he's not particularly interested in the Far East ones.
Thanks a lot.:)

x Witch:
This Avenger seems to fit perfectly in the Silver Marches' background. The Silver Legion is the sword and shield of the Marches, but the Silver Avengers (just an idea for the name) could easily be the hidden dagger that protects Alustriel's creation from his many enemies.
Not to mention the fact that, with some little changes, this prestige class could be changed into something like the Harpers Avenger (less sneak attack, more magic).
Thanks a lot.:)
