IF i am say a 8th level paladin and i decide to take a prestige class level in, oh lets say duelist. I have now taken a level in another class from paladin, does this mean i can no longer take paladin levels?
Or do prestige classes somehow rank as an exception to this general rule, which would be the case if i dueled into say a wizard.

Unless the class specifically states you can multi-class in Paladin, no you can't go back to your Paladin levels. Same with Monk, and any other class with the same restriction.

A paladin who takes a level in duelist can no longer continue gaining paladin levels. There are prestige classes that will let you freely multi class with paladin. They will say so; I think as a class feature.
