| ReganokKnight03-03-07, 05:54 PM | Blademaster This is my version of the Blademaster based off of Warcraft. Seeing as the Orcs in D&D are more or less completely different than those of the Warcraft Universe, the Blademaster is favored by more monstrous races (non-common race at least, maybe half-orcs raised by orcs). I took the barbarian and ran with it. The idea is that the blademaster is able to channel their rage so that they are more concentrated than *hack* *slash* *dead*. They are limited to two-handed weapons to keep with their flavor (preferably not weapons with reach but I don’t see why not…aside from abuse-ability). The craft (weaponsmithing) is a requirement as I felt that they should have some sort of personal connection with whatever the wield. I like the way Bladestorm works but I am thinking that that many attacks is a little unbalanced and am looking for a way to tone it down. I tried to do this by making the full version of Bladestorm cost an expenditure of Rage. I was thinking of adding a way go gain more AC to counter the lack of armor. I made it so that they lose any armor proficiencies they gained from other classes in an attempt to balance them. Some of my ideas include an AC bonus equal to ½ their total bonus to Concentration (notice BONUS not RANKS) while focused. That and/or some type of bonus to AC gained through levels, like the monk. In keeping with the original I want to add some form of increased threat range/crit multiplier. My idea is that it would equal ½ the number of rage/day you have left rounded down to a minimum of zero. The increased threat would be added after improved critical or keen effects. I was considering a +1 to the crit multiplier every 5 levels. For example, a x2 weapon wielded by a level 5 Blademaster would have a x3 multiplier and x4 at level 10. This would only be in affect while focused. I feel that this would be overpowered in combination with the full version of Bladestorm or even the regular Bladestorm. I have bad experiences with the dead levels of the Fighter and so want to fill the ones in this class. Thus the Bonus Rage Feat. I would like to add at least one more to fill any empty spaces. Hit Die: d10 Requirements: To qualify to become a Blademaster, a character must fulfill the following criteria: Base Attack Bonus: +5 Skills:Craft (Weaponsmithing) 8 ranks Tumble 4 ranks Concentration 4 ranks Feats: Weapon Proficiency (Any Two-Handed Slashing Weapon), Dodge, Mobility Special: Must have made your own Two-Handed Slashing Weapon of at least masterwork quality and wielded it in battle. Ability to Rage/Frenzy Class Skills: A Blademaster's class skills and key attribute for each are: Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Escape Artist (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Listen (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), Survival (Wis), Swim (Str), and Tumble (Dex). Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier. The Blademaster loses access to any of the abilities gained from this class if he wears armor of any sort. This does not include Bracers of Armor or other such item that provide an Armor bonus or shield bonus to AC. Mirror Image (Ex) This ability functions as Mirror Image spell for all intents and purposes but that it lasts as long as the Blademaster’s Intense Focus would last and has various other differences. The number of images is equal to your Blademaster level divided by 2 rounded down (minimum of one). Instead of destroying an image, damage done or spells cast on an image have a 25% chance of affecting the Blademaster. This includes all beneficial spells or abilities (i.e. the cleric reaches out to heal the image he thinks is you but touches an image instead, he has a 25% chance of touching you as you run past). All images must remain within your movement rate of you at all times. You may switch places with any of your images as a free action once per round without alerting your enemy as to which one you really are. Your images move on your turn before you do. You can use this ability as an added benefit of your Intense Focus ability as a free action. As Mirror Image is an extraordinary ability, it cannot be dispelled, but if you are helpless or otherwise unable to move or you simply stop moving then your images vanish. While your Images appear to do everything you do, when you engage in the Bladestorm ability, you are the only one doing so. None of your images will appear to spin and slash as you do so it will be plainly obvious which one is really you. This however does not matter if your enemy still believes all your Images to be the real you. Recognizing that the Images are fakes requires a spellcraft check of DC 22 (enough to identify the spell) or a Spot check of DC 10 + Dex Mod + Blademaster level + your movement rate/10 (ie DC 19 [10+5 Dex+1 level+(40ft/10)]). If Mirror Image is identified by a Spellcraft check then the person who made it believes this ability to be the spell and may even attempt to dispel it according to this belief. If identified by a Spot check then the person who made the check sees that the Blademaster is simply moving at incredible speeds, the person can also determine if the image they are looking at is or is not the Blademaster. If anyone bothers to look it fairly easy to see dust rising from the ground (if the ground is capable of creating dust) from the Blademasters movement. Intense Focus (Ex) Intense Focus acts like Rage except that the Blademaster gains a Dex bonus equal to the Str bonus. You gain no Con bonus while Focused. There is no AC reduction by entering Intense Focus. You gain a 20ft bonus to your speed while for the duration of your intense focus; this does not increase as the other bonuses do. Entering Intense Focus uses one of your daily uses of Rage. Levels gained in the Barbarian class and levels in the Blademaster Prestige stack when determining how many uses of Rage you have and whether you gain greater rage or mighty rage. Any feats, items, or spells that affect rage affect Intense Focus in the same fashion except the spell calm emotions. In addition, the Blademaster gains an effective +1 modifier to his strength while focused. This bonus increases by an additional +1 ever three levels. This is equal to +1 at level 3, +2 at level 6, and +3 at level 9. This effective strength bonus affects only attack and damage. Being in an Intense Focus does not allow you to cast spells or do other things that would require concentration. You can use Dex skills but not Int skills unless it immediately relevant to the task at hand like knowledge checks to determine a monsters weakness or vulnerabilities. Spring Attack The Blademaster Gains Spring Attack as a bonus feat. Unparalleled Swiftness (Ex) Through much practice the Blademaster has trained to be much more evasive than any enemy might expect. Your Dexterity bonus is added again to your AC as a Dodge bonus. As with any other dodge bonus it is lost if you are caught flatfooted or otherwise denied your Dex bonus to AC. The side affect of this training is that the Blademaster neglects training on enduring hits since he believes himself to be nearly untouchable. If the Blademaster is hit, he is not so much surprised as ****** off. It might cause him to train harder to evade attacks. This means that you take an additional 1 damage for each 5 damage dealt to you by a physical hit (not force or magic, but arrows, swords etc.). This extra damage does not count towards masssive damage i.e. if you take 45 damage, take an additional 9 damage but this would not cause a fort save for death by massive damage. Speed Bonus (Ex) The Blademaster gains a bonus to his speed. See the table; this bonus stacks with the one given by the barbarian class. Bonus Feat The Blademaster gains Whirlwind Attack as a bonus feat even if he does not meet the prerequisites. If you already have this feat you instead gain a bonus feat that has the ability to rage as a prerequisite and for which you meet the prerequisites. Bladestorm (Ex) At level 6, the Blademaster can let loose his focus rage in a flurry of fury and steel. As a full round action and by expending one of your rage/day, move up to your movement. You may make a whirlwind attacks at a -4 equal to your class level (at level 6 you can do 6 per turn). You must move at least 5ft between each attack. You gain AC against ranged attack of all kinds (ranged touch attacks/rays/arrows/bolts etc.) for the duration of Bladestorm equal to your Blademaster level. This ability lasts for 2 rounds, reduces your focus duration by 2 rounds, and you take 2 temp Wisdom damage. This damage lasts for 1 minute after combat is over. If this reduction in duration would end your focus before the end of the Bladestorm, you complete the 2 rounds of this ability as if you were focused. As soon as the duration of your focus is ended in this fashion, you are exhausted. After using this ability you may not use it again for 1d3-1 rounds, a roll of 1 (thus 0) means you may use it again next round. You can only use this ability while focused. You can chose not to expend a rage, if you don’t you may make a full attack while moving no more than your movement. You must move at least 5ft between attacks. You make two additional attacks at you highest base attack bonus. These attacks are made in addition to those gained by Swift Strike at 3rd and 7th level. Swift Strike (Ex) At 3rd level, the Blademaster my make an additional attack at his full Base Attack Bonus. Every attack made this with this extra attack are made at a -5. At 7th level, the Blademaster gains another attack in addition to the one gained at level 3, all attacks made with this one are made at the previously stated -5. Bladestorm, Greater (Ex) As Whirlwind but damage uses 2x your strength modifier and you gain AC against ranged attack of all kinds (ranged touch attacks/rays/arrows/bolts etc.) for the duration of Bladestorm equal to your 2x Blademaster Level. With Greater Bladestorm, when you would make a whirlwind attack instead attack each target seperately. The penalty to attacks is reduced to -2. You still only get a number of whirlwind attacks equal to your class level. As with Bladestorm if you don’t expend a rage, then you can make a full attack while moving no more than your movement. You must move at least 5ft between each attack. You gain 4 additional attacks at you highest base attack bonus. These attacks are made in addition to those gained by Swift Strike at 7th and 9th level. |

Class Features: Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: The Blademaster gains not armor or weapon proficiencies as a result of this class in fact the Blademaster loses any armor proficiencies he might have gained from any other class. The Blademaster loses access to any of the abilities gained from this class if he wears armor of any sort. This does not include Bracers of Armor or other such item that provide an Armor bonus or shield bonus to AC. They shouldn't lose already gained armor proficiencies. The fact that they lose access to class features for wearing armor is a big enough penalty. They player should still be allowed the option. Mirror Image (Ex) This ability functions as Mirror Image spell for all intents and purposes but that it lasts as long as the Blademaster’s Intense Focus would last and has various other differences. If anyone bothers to look it fairly easy to see dust rising from the ground (if the ground is capable of creating dust) from the Blademasters movement. This is just to much. The images don't get destroyed and their is only a 25% chance that the damage or spell affects the Blademaster? That is moderate fortification that effects normal damage and spells as well. This needs a lot of work. Intense Focus (Ex) Intense Focus acts like Rage except that the Blademaster gains a Dex bonus equal to the Str bonus minus 2. The Con bonus is likewise reduced by 2. Being in an Intense Focus does not allow you to cast spells or do other things that would require concentration. This to is to much. Bonuses to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution? That's not right. Spring Attack The Blademaster Gains Spring Attack as a bonus feat. OK. No, just no. Especially with how you want Intense Focus to work. Adding Dex twice to AC is to powerful on it's own, to then add in an ability that boosts your Dexterity is way over the top. Speed Bonus (Ex) The Blademaster gains a bonus to his speed. See the table; this bonus stacks with the one given by the barbarian class. You gain a speed bonus from Intense Focus and this as well. This is too much. Bonus Feat The Blademaster gains Whirlwind Attack as a bonus feat even if he does not meet the prerequisites. If you already have this feat you instead gain a bonus feat that has the ability to rage as a prerequisite and for which you meet the prerequisites. OK. Bladestorm (Ex) At level 6, the Blademaster can let loose his focus rage in a flurry of fury and steel. As a swift action and expend one of your rage per day, move up to half your movement. At every 5ft you move, you may make one attack against every foe you threaten. You gain AC against ranged attack of all kinds (ranged touch attacks/rays/arrows/bolts etc.) for the duration of Bladestorm equal to your Blademaster level. This ability lasts for 2 rounds and reduces your focus duration by 2 rounds. If this reduction in duration would end your focus before the end of the Bladestorm, you complete the 2 rounds of this ability as if you were focused. As soon as the duration of your focus is ended in this fashion, you are exhausted. You make two additional attacks at you highest base attack bonus. These attacks are made in addition to those gained by Swift Strike at 7th and 9th level. During the duration of Bladestorm, the Blademaster may make an attaof oppertunity against anyone who enters his/her threatened area. You may make any number of these attacks per turn as long as it is because an enemy has entered your threat area. Huh? You get to move up to half your movement, which is probably still more than an average character due to all the movement boosts, making one attack per 5' moved and gain an AC boost against ranged attacks of all kinds and make unlimited AoO's? Way too much, especially for one class feature. Swift Strike (Ex) At 7th level, the Blademaster my make an additional attack at his full Base Attack Bonus. Every attack made this with this extra attack are made at a -2. At 9th level, the Blademaster gains another attack in addition to the one gained at level 7, all attacks made with this one are made at the previously stated -2. So, 6 attacks a round at a -2 penalty? +18/+18/+18/+13/+8/+3. This is to powerful as well. This is just another way to powerful ability in a very unbalanced class. The best way to fix this would be to start at ground zero and rebuild all of it. There is nothing even close to resembling balance in this current design. |

If anyone bothers to look it fairly easy to see dust rising from the ground (if the ground is capable of creating dust) from the Blademasters movement. This ability is still way to powerful. If you want to have a feature like this that is balanced, give the class a times per day Mirror Image (as the spell with no modifications or wonky mechanics) that is cast as a Wizard of the Blademaster's level x 2. This needs a flat out inability to make intelligence based checks as it is currently written. Allowing them to make Int checks to "determine a monsters weakness or vulnerabilities" defeats a big part of the drawback in the first place. No one is going to make a Knowledge (Nobility and Royalty) check in the middle of combat anyway. Another good way to balance this would be to require a concentration check to activate. My suggestion: "The Blademaster may make a Concentration check (DC 20) as a standard action. Success grants the Blademaster a +4 to strength and a +4 to dexterity for a number of rounds equal to half their class level. Due to the extreme concentration required to use this ability all intelligence based checks take a -8 to the roll for the duration of the Intense Focus." They don't get the speed bonus this way, but the class already grants a speed bonus. Having both is a too much in my opinion. It does allow the Blademaster to make Int checks but at a penalty to represent the difficult of splitting the focus. No, just no. Dex should not apply to AC twice. And your penalties are barely penalties. It causes damage, but won't make you suffer death from massive damage? That's isn't right. You have a PrC that is tailored for a barbarian (which has the highest HD in the game) and then grants a D10 (the second highest in the game). A few extra points of damage is not all that harsh of a penalty to a character like this, especially if it doesn't threaten death from massive damage. My suggestion change this to an AC bonus derived from movement. For every 10' moved that round the Blademaster gains a +1 dodge bonus to AC. If the Blademaster would be denied his dexterity to Ac for any reason they are also denied this bonus. This would net the character a +4 to AC (+8 if charging) at higher levels and with the right feats the character could still make three attacks at the end of movement. You really have a thing for making penalties that aren't really penalties. 1) NO BONUS AC. 2) The character should just be fatigued after using this not gain some weak psuedo-penalty like temp wisdom damage. No wacky ability to use this feature again 1dwhatever-1. 3) The Duration mechanic makes no sense. It lasts 2 rounds, reduce you focus by two rounds, if this would end your focus before ending Bladestorm you remain focused for the duration of Bladestorm? Why have it modify focus in the first place if it means nothing to the use of the feature? Instead you should just lose focus at the end of the Bladestorm despite how long of a duration may still exist. Make it that the class can not regain focus again for the a certain period of time and you could even drop the fatigued status. Barbarian 10/Blademaster 3 has a base attack of +13/+8/+3. This ability modifies that to +8/+8/+3/-2. Barbarian 10/Blademaster 7 has a base attack of +17/+12/+7/+2. This ability modifies that to +12/+12/+12/+7/+2/-3. Barbarian 10/Blademaster 10 has a base attack of +20/+15/+10/+5. This ability modifies that to a +15/+15/+15/+10/+5/+0. This is still too much considering all the bonus that can easily negate these penalties. Even if you reduced the second gained attack by -10 you will still most likely hit with 4 maybe 5 attacks on a regular basis. If this class had a medium BAB and the feature worked like Monk's flurry it would be more balanced. Instead you may want to consider giving them only one bonus attack. This just takes the brokenness that is Bladestorm and makes it a Greater broken ability. 1) This glass already gets a strength boost and now they get to add double their strength bonus to damage. That's a bit much. 2) NO MORE AC BONUSES. Ranged or otherwise. 3) I would never use the whirlwind part of this ability if my character can, as an alternative, make 10 attacks around at 20th level. Lets calculate that shall we. +20/+20/+20/+20/+15/+15/+15/+10/+5/+0. Half-Orc Barbarian 10/Blademaster 10 with a 25 strength, +5 Great Sword, Weapon Focus (Great Sword), +3 Strength boost from Intense Focus, for a grand total of +15 to hit. So Attack per round would be +35/+35/+35/+35/+30/+30/+30/+25/+20/+15. Average of 2d6+13 per hit for 19 points of damage in a not even remotely optimized build. As most (if not all) of these attacks should hit that could be up to 190 points of damage a round. Who needs more than 2 rounds with that kind of full attack? This doesn't calculate in the other strength boosting items that could come into play. This is too much. |
| blindcynic03-22-07, 12:29 PM | Hi Reganokknight, I have to say that I play Warcraft III Frozen throne all of the time, my personal favourite heroes are: The Undead Archer and her silence ability, The Paladin (For his armour aura), and the Blademaster. I also enjoy the Panda brewmaster, the Fire-fiend and the orc shaman. I am not so bad and not so great at the game. That aside I must say your heart seems in the right place for the class...but you have gone completely munchkin in terms of power. A few 15th level characters with some levels in this class would own some 25th level characters.... My advice is to scrap what you have so far and start from the ground up again. It's painful I know, but as I guy who has made his own fair share of Munchkin PRC's I know it's worth it. I have thought a little about your class idea and here's a 15 minute version. I made it with a 10 level progression and the 6th level flurry might still be too powerful, I don't know. Anyway, you got me thinking about the Blade-master too and I tried to stay true to the game and keep it playable. I know you wanted it to be a Barbarian PRC but I just don't see it that way myself. Blade-master means skilled with a Blade, where-as a Barbarian can't even select the weapon specialization feat...Which I think is a necessity for game balance and the theme of the class. For Example Req's BAB: +5 Feats: weapon Specialization with any bladed weapon of at least medium size, power attack and dodge. Race: (Personally I think it should be mainly goblinoids and orcs but open to all.) BAB: as Fighter Saves: as Fighter HP: as Fighter Armour and Weapon proficiencies: None are gained. Skills:4+Int modifier (Balance, Climb, Concentration, Handle Animal, Hide, Intimidate, Jump, Move Silently, Spot, Survival, Swim and Tumble.) Level 1: Add a +2 to all damage rolls for any attack rolls that hit over what you needed to roll by a 5 or more. This damage is automatically included whenever you make a critical threat. This ability can only be used with any bladed (Slashing) weapon with which you have the weapon specialization feat. This damage stacks with the weapon specialization and strength bonus for your weapon. This is an Extroardinary Ability. (Example of this ability: Garrik the 5th level fighter, 1st level blademaster has a +6 BAB and a +1 bonus with his bastard sword from his weapon focus feat. That's a total of +7 he is fighting a 13 hit point hobgoblin AC 13, and rolls a 14. 14+7=21 well over 13+5=18, the hobgoblins AC+5, and adds +2 damage to his damage total from this ability. Rolling 1d10, getting a 6, adding 2 bonus damage from weapon specialization and 2 bonus damage from this ability to get an ten! Level 2: The Blademaster adds a +1 Deflection bonus to his AC whenever he wields a bladed (slashing) weapon with which he also has the weapon specialization feat. This deflection bonus is lost whenever you are flat-footed or would lose your Dex bonus. level 3: The Blade-master begins to develop spells; He can now cast 0 1st level spells. (See Blade-master spell list) level 4: The Blade-master can now grant the keen special ability to any slashing weapon he uses in combat (for a limited time see below), provided it is one he also has the weapon specialization feat for. (1/round per level+cha bonus/day) Note: This ability does NOT stack with the keen ability of a weapon. If the blade-master already has a weapon that has the keen property, this ability has no effect.) The Blade-master can break up his use of this ability throughout the day. For example: Garrik our 6th level fighter, 4th level Blade-master has a charisma of 12 (thats a +1 modifier) for a total of 5 rounds per day of keen-ness. He uses it for three rounds against an enemy fighter and six hours later uses it for 2 rounds against a lesser demon. Supernatural ability. level 5: The Blade-master gains a spell slot. 1 first level spell slot for Blade-master spells. level 6: The Blade-master can make a flurry of slashing attacks once per week. This is extremely draining however and causes the blade-master to move to the fatigued condition the round after it's use. The blade-master gains an additional two attacks at his highest attack bonus, but all of his attacks suffer a -2 for the duration of this ability. Which is always only for two rounds. Extraordinary Ability For example Garrik our 5th level fighter, 6th level Blade-master has a BAB of +11/+6/+1 that's three attacks per round. Using this ability against four hobgoblins, and wielding his bastard sword (which he has the weapon focus and weapon spec feats for) he adds +1 bonus to strike and a +2 to damage. His attack bonus moves up to +12/+7/+2 with his bastard sword. With this ability it changes to +10/+10/+10/+5/+0 for the next two rounds. That's ten attacks many of which might land. The following round however, he moves to the fatigued condition. As a result of fatigue he can neither run nor charge and takes a -2 penalty to strength and dexterity. It takes eight hours of complete rest to become no longer fatigued. Note: This ability does NOT stack with any other flurry ability. level 7: The Blade-master gains another 1st level spell slot. level 8: The Blade-master adds a +1 bonus to his attack rolls with any slashing weapon he wields. Extraordinary ability. level 9: The Blade-master gains a 2nd level spell slot. Fast recuperation: A blade-master of this caliber has learned to cope with fatigue and heals from that condition and that condition only in just 5 hours of complete rest. level 10: The Blade-master gains an additional use of his flurry of slashing attacks once per week. Baring in mind if he uses this ability twice in an encounter for example he will go from normal to fatigued to exhausted! Becoming practically useless for the remainder of the adventure if he is not allowed to recuperate. Blade-masters must learn to judisciously use the Blade-storm ability to avoid becoming fatigued or exhausted during mass combats. Blade Master Spell list: Key stat is Charisma 1st: Invisibility, Mirror Image and Rage. 2nd: Blink, Haste and Gaseous form. |
| ReganokKnight03-23-07, 12:18 AM | Thanks for your input guys, i am revising it a wee bit... it doesn't seem so overpowered in my head...this will be edited fairly soon |
| enygmatic_me03-23-07, 02:27 AM | For a 15 minute brainstorm this is not a bad start. Here are just a few points of note. For Example Req's BAB: +5 Feats: weapon Specialization with any bladed weapon of at least medium size, power attack and dodge. Race: (Personally I think it should be mainly goblinoids and orcs but open to all.) Weapon Specialization with any bladed weapon of at least medium size? So this race cannot be taken by race smaller then medium sized? Remember, creatures of small size or smaller can't use medium sized weapons. Also, only three classes would allow entrance to this PrC; Fighter, Warblade, and Favored Soul. Instead, get rid of power attack as a Feat requirement and change the Feat requirements to "Dodge and Weapon Focus (Any Two Slashing Weapons)" This still makes the feat requirements more inclined toward the fighter but allows any class that wants to increase their martial abilities to build to it. To keep more to the feel maybe make the requirements Dodge and Weapon Focus (Any Three Slashing Weapons). This would easily be obtainable by the Fighter by 4th level (3rd for humans and strongheart halflings). Everyone else would need to be 9th level (6th level for humans and strongheart halflings). BAB: as Fighter Saves: as Fighter HP: as Fighter Armour and Weapon proficiencies: None are gained. Skills:4+Int modifier (Balance, Climb, Concentration, Handle Animal, Hide, Intimidate, Jump, Move Silently, Spot, Survival, Swim and Tumble.) Might be too many skill points for such a short list of skills. I did notice at least one skill that you didn't put on there that you should, Craft. Profession and Perform should probably be added as well. These three and maybe a couple more flavor skill and the 4+Int Mod would probably be fine. Level 1: Add a +2 to all damage rolls for any attack rolls that hit over what you needed to roll by a 5 or more. Interesting concept, but a little wonky in mechanics. Even at higher levels this feature would be hard to gain benefit from in a conflict equal to the characters CR. It may just be easier to reflect this as a flat addition to damage. Something along the lines of +2 at first level and another +1 every three levels beyond first (+3 at 4th, +4 at 7th, +5 at 10th). Level 2: The Blademaster adds a +1 Deflection bonus to his AC whenever he wields a bladed (slashing) weapon with which he also has the weapon specialization feat. This deflection bonus is lost whenever you are flat-footed or would lose your Dex bonus. I like this, though I would suggest (going along with my suggested change to requirements) that it applies to weapons they have weapon focus with. level 3: The Blade-master begins to develop spells; He can now cast 0 1st level spells. (See Blade-master spell list)[QUOTE=blindcynic;11854201] I am assuming that they receive bonus spells for high Charisma? [QUOTE=blindcynic;11854201]level 4: The Blade-master can now grant the keen special ability to any slashing weapon he uses in combat (for a limited time see below), provided it is one he also has the weapon specialization feat for. As an (Su) this could probably just work like the improved critical feat. No need to give it a round limit. Just make it that it doesn't stack with the improved critical feat or the keen enchantment. level 5: The Blade-master gains a spell slot. 1 first level spell slot for Blade-master spells. OK level 6: The Blade-master can make a flurry of slashing attacks once per week. With the ability causing fatigue and lasting only two rounds, add in that it can only be used with weapons that the Blademaster has Weapon Focus for, this would be ok as a once a day ability. level 7: The Blade-master gains another 1st level spell slot. OK. level 8: The Blade-master adds a +1 bonus to his attack rolls with any slashing weapon he wields. Extraordinary ability. For when it is gained it is weak. Also, not to sure they need another +1 to hit. evel 9: The Blade-master gains a 2nd level spell slot. Fast recuperation: A blade-master of this caliber has learned to cope with fatigue and heals from that condition and that condition only in just 5 hours of complete rest. Fast recuperations is not that great. Another way to handle this (or in addition to the 8 hours of rest), especially as a 9th level feature, is to allow a Fortitude save to remove the fatigued status. A DC of 20 or so should be fair. The check can be made once an hour. level 10: The Blade-master gains an additional use of his flurry of slashing attacks once per week. Again, this could probably be changed to "one additional use per day". The abilities reset at dawn. Blade Master Spell list: Key stat is Charisma 1st: Invisibility, Mirror Image and Rage. 2nd: Blink, Haste and Gaseous form. Limit these to only be cast on the Blademaster (ie, range is personal only) with a caster level equal to their class level and this list should be just fine. |
| blindcynic03-23-07, 10:41 AM | Thanx Enigmatic_me I appreciate your input. Nice catches on virtually everything. Weapon Specialization with any bladed weapon of at least medium size? Yeah that was way too wordy (what I wrote), but I wanted it be random...so how about every time the blademaster rolls weapon damage with a slashing weapon, their is a 30% chance the Blademaster adds +2 (which is also tallied in automatically on crits. At level 3 this damage increases to +4 and level nine this damage increases to +6! I decided to just insert my edits as above thought it would save time. |
| blindcynic03-23-07, 11:37 AM | Hi again, Somethings going on with Wizard's website and I cannot edit my posts! So here goes the blade-master revisited I view the Blade-master class for D&D more for the Hobgoblin race. In D&D they are the most militant and lawful of the evil humanoids, they fight tactically and are most likely to have high level fighters in their group. Therefore, in my campaign should I introduce this PRC (MAYBE, MAYBE NOT) a precious few hobgoblin baddies will have this PRC and either train or attack my PC's. I am a huge fan of PRC's and feel the add a whole new dimension to D&D, most especially world specific ones. Req's BAB: +5 Feats: Dodge, Weapon focus (any slashing) Special: The Blade-master must have been deeply exposed in some form (Books, pictures, tales, or actual opponents or friends) to the Blade-master class. HP: As fighter SAVES: As fighter Weapon and Armour Proficiencies: None are gained Race: (Personally I think it should be mainly goblinoids and orcs but open to all.) Skills:4+Int modifier (Balance, Climb, Concentration, Craft, Handle Animal, Hide, Intimidate, Jump, Move Silently, Perform, Profession, Spot, Survival, Swim and Tumble.) Level 1: Critical Strike: There is a 30% the Blade-master adds a +2 bonus to any damage total he rolls up, when using a slashing weapon with which he also has the weapon focus feat for. At level 3 the bonus increases to +4, at level 5 to +6, at level 7 to +8 and at level 9 to +10! Level 2: The Blademaster adds a +1 Deflection bonus to his AC whenever he wields a bladed (slashing) weapon with which he also has the weapon focus feat. This deflection bonus is lost whenever you are flat-footed or would lose your Dex bonus. level 3: The Blade-master begins to develop spells; He can now cast 0 1st level spells. (See Blade-master spell list) Note: All Blade-master spells have the range of personal ONLY. Critical strike improves. level 4: The Blade-master can now grant the keen special ability to any slashing weapon he uses in combat (for a limited time see below), provided it is one he also has the weapon focus feat for. (1/round per level+cha bonus/day) Due to the focus required to perform this martial maneuver all attacks performed by the blade-master suffer a -2 penalty. When using this ability. Note: This ability does NOT stack with the keen ability of a weapon. It DOES stack with the improved critical feat though. (If the blade-master already has a weapon that has the keen property, this ability has no effect.) The Blade-master can break up his use of this ability throughout the day. (I chose to give the -2 penalty because the ability stacks with Improved crit feat and because I can only imagine the hideous per round damage if used with blade-storm flurry...) level 5: The Blade-master gains a spell slot. 1 first level spell slot for Blade-master spells. Critical Strike improves. level 6: The Blade-master can make a flurry of slashing attacks once per 24 hours. Critical strike improves. level 8: The Blade-master's prowess with the blade has reached legendary porportions and he is able to perform weapon tricks! With a successful perform check DC 20, he can perform any ONE of the following per round. Aid Another: When using the weapon trick ability and aid another ability he increases the benefit or "aid" he gives either in AC or next attack roll from +2 to +4! (See PHB 154) Flanking: When using the weapon trick ability and flanking an opponent the blade-master increases his own flanking bonus from +2 to +4! (See PHB page 153) Fighting Defensively: When the blade-master fights defensively as a full round action he increases his armour class with a dodge bonus of +4 instead of +2 when using the weapon trick ability! (See PHB 143) Bonus attack of Opportunity: When using the Weapon trick ability he may add one additional attack of opportunity to his total attacks of opportunity for the round. Note: This does not provide more than one attack per attack of opportunity! level 9: The Blade-master gains a 2nd level spell slot. Fast recuperation: A blade-master of this caliber has learned to cope with fatigue and heals from that condition on a successful fort save (DC 22). He is allowed to attempt a fort save 10 rounds after his Blade-storm ability and every 10 rounds thereafter. Critical strike improves. level 10: The Blade-master gains an additional use of his flurry of slashing attacks once per 24 hours. Note the Fast recuperation ability can only remove the fatigued condition NOT the exhausted condition. Blade Master Spell list: Key stat is Charisma 1st: Invisibility, Mirror Image and Rage. 2nd: Blink, Haste and Gaseous form. |
| PrinceCurtis03-23-07, 04:56 PM | Cool.... |
| ReganokKnight03-24-07, 02:23 AM | Hey Blindcynic, noticed you started your thread for various WC prestige classes. Are you going to(or have you) look(ed) into the lorefor influence? I hope so, the storyline is fun. I don't want to ignore your advice/thoughts outright but i would like to keep this a barbarian prestige because i believe it fits the tribal background from which the Orcs came from. Esp when they became affected by their bloodrage. That and i have been running this through my head for over the past month...too much time invested me thinks. I am now going to name some of the changes i am going to make and then post a total revised version. I am also going to explain why i made some of the changes in the hopes that people will be able to understand where im coming from. ------------------------------------ First on the choping block --Intense Focus-- I took some of the ideas enygmatic_me suggested in regards to the Intense Focus ability. The speed bonus has been removed (it was there because i originally had a number of movement dependent abilities but i realised movement is too easily improved and made the abilities overpowered) A DC 15 concentration check is required to activate Intense Focus. For every 5 that you beat the DC by you increase the duration of the Focus by 1 round. If you attempt to persist the focus beyond the duration you must succeed a DC 20 concentration check (+5 for each additional round afterwards) or suffer a -2 on all mental ability scores (these stack). Thus 5 failures in a row for most characters would result in a coma. After you focus ends, any minuses gained are traded for an equal minus to all of your physical ability scores (and your mental scores return to normal). These penalties can be releived by an hour of rest for each -2 of the penalty (-4 to your scores would require 2hrs rest to "heal") or 8hrs (a full nights rest). You can volentarily increase the DC to focus by 5 to gain +1 on your attack, damage, and AC for the duration of your focus. This bonus stacks, if you increase the DC to 25 (and make it) you get +2 to attack, damage, and AC for the rest of you focus. PS- I am thinking of adding an unnamed bonus to concentration over the course of the class... +1 per lvl? lemme know. Second-- ---Unparalelled Swiftness---- I am trying to keep this ability as part of the class. I do not see the Blademaster as a movement type of class, in most cases they stand toe to toe with most of their opponents. so the +1 dodge ac for every 10ft moved does't seem to fit to me. The "negitve DR" now scales with level to attempt to justify the massive AC that the BM is capable of. As i said "Through much practice the Blademaster has trained to be much more evasive than any enemy might expect....The side affect of this training is that the Blademaster neglects training on enduring hits since he believes himself to be nearly untouchable." i am sticking with this idea but making it more so... +1 per 5 damage @lvl 1, +2 per 5 @ lvl 3, +3 per 5 @ lvl 5, +4 per 5 @ lvl 7, and +5 per 5 @ lvl 9. Effectivly doubleing the damage they take from physical attacks. The extra damage will contribute to massive damage. My only problem with this is that after a while nearly any physical attack will cause a Massive Damage save or die. somewhat justified but not really. Third --Mirror Image (Ex)-- I am keeping it the same for the most part but i am pointing out some things that i am not sure i added to the original version. All of the Images provoke AoOs as normal. You have a 25% chance (50% from lvl 1 to lvl 4 since you only have 1 Image) of hitting the BM when you strike an Image, you still hit the BM 100% of the time (provided you can tell which one is him and can hit his AC). Also, if an attack of any kind (magic or otherwise) would strike more than one Image (or the BM himself) he only needs to make the save once. (if only images get hit, then the attack has a 25% chance to hit for each Image). I am not currently changing Swift Strike (if more ideas are brought forth then maybe) Forth and Final --Bladestorm-- Reducing the AC bonus to 1/2 class level (does not change for Greater Bladestorm) Temp Wis damage increased to 4 from 2 Still lasts for 2 rounds but the duration decrease is increased to 1/4 the total duration rounded up. x1 Str to damage (x2 for Greater) this applies to the version where you dont expend another rage/day Number of attacks changed to BAB/5 +3 for full Bladestorm (expended another rage/day) and BAB/5 +4 for full greater bladestorm. The function of non-full bladestorm is the same but only 1 additional attack (does not change for greater). You get the AC bonus regardless of whether or not an extra rage is expended. While bladestorming you can make an AoO against anyone who enters a square you threaten. You are still limited to your AoOs per round. *sigh* time to tranfer the changes... |
| ReganokKnight03-24-07, 02:45 AM | Blademaster Revised Hit Die: d10 Requirements: To qualify to become a Blademaster, a character must fulfill the following criteria: Base Attack Bonus: +5 Skills:Craft (Weaponsmithing) 8 ranks Tumble 4 ranks Concentration 4 ranks Feats: Weapon Proficiency (Any Two-Handed Slashing Weapon), Dodge, Mobility, Combat Reflexes Special: Must have made your own Two-Handed Slashing Weapon of at least masterwork quality and wielded it in battle. A DC 15 concentration check is required to activate Intense Focus. Being in an Intense Focus does not allow you to cast spells or do other things that would require concentration. You can use Dex skills but not Int skills unless it immediately relevant to the task at hand like knowledge checks to determine a monsters weakness or vulnerabilities. (now really, who is going to use knowledge or craft check in combat?) Spring Attack The Blademaster Gains Spring Attack as a bonus feat. Critical Strike Add 1 to the threat range of the weapon you wield while focused. this is added after keen or improved critical. this bonus to threat range increases to 2 at level 7 and 3 at level 10. Bladestorm (Ex) At level 6, the Blademaster can let loose his focus rage in a flurry of fury and steel. As a full round action and by expending one of your rage/day, move up to your movement. You may make a whirlwind attacks at a -4 equal to BAB/5 +3 for full Bladestorm (expended another rage/day). You must move at least 5ft between each attack. Damage dealt by these attacks use only x1 your str bonus instead of the normal x1.5. You gain AC against ranged attack of all kinds (ranged touch attacks/rays/arrows/bolts etc.) for the duration of Bladestorm equal to 1/2 your Blademaster level. You get this bonus whether or not you expend the extra rage/day. This ability lasts for 2 rounds, reduces your focus duration by 1/4 the total duration rounded up, and you take 4 temp Wisdom damage. You make 1 additional attack at your highest base attack bonus. This attack is made in addition to those gained by Swift Strike at 3rd and 7th level. Damage dealt with these attacks use x1 your str instead of the standard x1.5. While bladestorming you can make an AoO against anyone who enters a square you threaten. You are still limited to your AoOs per round. Bladestorm, Greater (Ex) As Whirlwind but damage uses 2x your strength modifier and you gain AC against ranged attack of all kinds (ranged touch attacks/rays/arrows/bolts etc.) for the duration of Bladestorm equal to 1/2 your Blademaster Level. With Greater Bladestorm, when you would make a whirlwind attack instead attack each target seperately. The penalty to attacks is reduced to -2. You get a number of whirlwind attacks equal to your BAB/5 +4 for full greater bladestorm. As with Bladestorm if you don’t expend a rage, then you can make a full attack while moving no more than your movement. You must move at least 5ft between each attack. You gain 1 additional attack at your highest base attack bonus. This attack is made in addition to those gained by Swift Strike at 3rd and 7th level. Damage dealt by these attacks use 2x your str instead of the standard x1.5 or the x1 from bladestorm. While bladestorming you can make an AoO against anyone who enters a square you threaten. You are still limited to your AoOs per round. |
| blindcynic03-26-07, 12:06 PM | Okay, sorry Rekanokknight:weep: I really, really enjoy your ideas, your efforts and reading what you have written. But as for this class...Please don't think I did this without giving it due consideration, me and three others playtested it and a few other classes. Including some of my recent ones which ARE also overpowered... Your class is overpowered, unbalanced and nearly each ability is beyond overpowered. Off the top of my head I would say: Mirror Image: Just leave it as the spell in PHB, a 3rd level spell like ability at first level is overpowering enough, without making it better. Intense focus- needlessly complicated, with too many ways for it to go wrong. It also doesn't work well with rage or instead of rage. Dex instead of strength? Find OK, but then allowing rolls to add to the duration or +1 to attack, damage and AC!? No way man, thats broken. Swift Strike?! Without a limited duration or attack roll penalties or anything else...this really, really broken. Check out your first level benefits: Lots of good skills (Why listen, escape artist and sense motive by the way?!), a bonus feat, full BAB, d10 HD, two good saves, an extra rage and to top it all off a 3rd level (minimum spell like ability). I am sorry to say but one level dipping in this class would become mandatory to keep up with party strength! Sorry Reganokknight but your level progression is just unbalanced. Finally Blade-storm is hideously overpowered and scary. It combines three feats and gives a huge bonus against ranged weapon all for the use of one rage a day? Read it and then, just for fun play test a 5th level Barbarian, 5th level Blademaster (revised) against two 12th level mounted paladins or barbarians. (I have a feeling you will hold your own.) or if you really need evidence play test a 6th level Barbarian/ 10th level BM (revised) (with a 13 in every stat) against 2 10th level half-orcish barbarians, an ICE Devil and a 14th level Centaur scout. (really high level NPC's from one of my past campaigns). Please note that in Bladestorm you can run down the Centaur! The Half-orc barbarians were slaughtered in two rounds (without striking the BM who I gave no magic items by the way, just allowed him to HIT the Ice Devil if he made a successful attack roll), the Ice devil died in about four rounds and the centaur was run down high taling it! (He had a head start to.) (I playtested it twice, once where the Ice Devil managed to capture him with a slow spell effect(lucky)), then summoned a marvelously rolled 5 barbazu! The other time was more normal, which I just mentioned, where with relatively normal rolls the BM owned the competition, the Ice Devil was ridiculously rocked and against so many opponents the BM still kicked butt! Please don't think of this as hate message or anything, take it back to the drawing board. One thing I think you should look at is the Dervish class, which has alot of abilities you are trying to get in your BM class but in a balanced way. Only at tenth level does the Dervish (which is an overpowered class) manage a blade-storm like ability. |
| Tekas_Tinkered_Dragon03-26-07, 12:12 PM | I stopped reading this class the moment I found out that it required Rage or Frenzy. From a flavor standpoint a true blademaster would never rage or frenzy, he who enters a fight angry dies angry. A true blademaster would be one built around Spring Attack, movement bonuses, wearing light armor and increasing defense. Just my two cents on the flavor. |
| blindcynic03-26-07, 01:39 PM | Tekas, you should read the whole post before replying...I have a class made that does NOT require rage. As for Reganokknight, he explicitly states that he WANTS to emulate a weapon master-ish class that HAS rage. Please don't reply if you haven't read the post!!! It's pointless. |
| ReganokKnight03-26-07, 08:14 PM | :weep: yes i know its overpowered, i just dont want to admit to my self... if i change Mirror Images to the spell do you think it would be ok if i kept if as a free action when attivating focus? (the intense focus was ment to replace rage, not stack with it. in fact if rage was used, you lose all the class abilities including dex to dadge AC) ill get back to this later, it need a lot more retooling... PS i wrote this before reading your playtesting exprience...made me cringe...Blade storm was meant to be dervish dance except not as good and useing whirlwind attacks instead of normal ones |
| blindcynic03-27-07, 01:11 PM | ReganoKknight No worries mate, I am trying to help you succeed in making your PRC. if i change Mirror Images to the spell do you think it would be ok if i kept if as a free action when attivating focus? I am not sure what you mean here. A spell should NEVER be a free action without the quickened spell feat or similar ability. A spell-like ability should probably not be a Free action. (That is without feats or something to speed them up) (the intense focus was ment to replace rage, not stack with it. in fact if rage was used, you lose all the class abilities including dex to dadge AC) I think you misinterpreted what I wrote before, I meant to say that gaining Rage as a Barbarian of the same level AND an ability that lets you use rage differently, in many ways simply better, is very powerful. With the other stuff your PRC currently grants it's just too powerful. I read what you wrote and thought that meant if your a 5th level Barbarian and 6th level Blade-master you gain Rage a number of times per day as a 10th level barbarian. I also assumed you would gain might rage. If I am wrong then please clarify what it is that you mean by this paragraph. This ability is very confusing, it looks to me like your trying to create a character that can't be hit. You double his DEX bonus which could be quite high, but we know for sure is really high when he uses Intense Focus. Then after basically making the character unhittable you throw in the idea that he should take extra damage from his foes? It doesn't make sense to me, either as an ability or rules wise. It's not really a drawback to take extra damage from hits if you are rarely, if ever, actually hit. This ability doesn't work, if your want it to go along with Barbarian theme, change it to a flat DR 2/-. Because Intense Focus already grants a high DEX bonus to AC. I am noticing your class only increases rage, barbarians have other cool abilities to. Your bladestorm math formula is very hard to read and I could see it being a pain to use daily. Plus I just don't understand the mechanics. |
