Yes. This is because the blighter sucks, and is reserved for NPCs only.

Mainly because you have to BURN DOWN A FOREST EVERYDAY JUST TO KEEP YOUR SPELLCASTING.

Oh, and your class abilities suck, too. =P

Blighter does not "suck" and its not reserved for NPC only ( sorry if this comes off at hostile, ive played and loved the blighter class before).

Blighter at earlyest when compaired to a normal druid will be weaker than it yes. However Blighters gain the ability to get 9th level spells before their normal druid counterparts, which is big.

Also they do not burn down forests, their ability withers the ground around them. At low levels killing 20 feet of plant life isint going to be a big deal. but if your continuing on blighter it becomes a much bigger issue. The way around? take another prestege class that advances your casting from blighter.

Some of the normal class abilitys are kind of interesting, like free animate dead on animals, and the undead wildshaping.

Really? I really can't see the draw.

You lose:
- Spellcasting. Yes, you get 9th level spells earlier, but you get the worst 9th level spells, and a really restrictive and bland spell list. You have to start over with 1st level spells whilst other druids your level are casting 3rd level spells. You're behind at lower levels!
- The Deforestation is a 1st level ability, and it requires you to deforest an area every single day. PrCing out doesn't help, as it's intrinsically part of the Blighter's spellcasting. If you have less levels in Blighter, it just means that you have to deforest less. Pretty ironic for a hater of nature to have to stick around it and rely on it for their power.
- The undead wildshape gives you pretty much nothing. It makes you weaker. You lose your Con to HP and you become susceptable to turning. And since you have no turn resistance, byebye! Oh, and your ex-druid levels don't stack to determine the HD of the forms you can assume. And it's a spell like ability, not a supernatural one, so it can be dispelled. And you don't have flight.

You gain:
- The ability to animate animal skeletons. Not interesting and useful skeletons, just animal ones (still tied to the forest, I see). It doesn't state the caster level of the ability, though.. hmm.
- The ability to not drink or eat anything and survive. A free ring of sustinence without the sleep bit? Eh, it's fair.
- The ability to light wildfires and damage people around you for 5d6 fire damage. Eh. Waste of an action unless you're surrounding, which as a spellcaster you don't want happening.
- The ability to inflict disease on people 3/day. Flavourful, but hardly useful and certainly not the backbone to a class.
- You can cast in metal armor... or can you?

A blighter prepares and casts spells just as a druid does.

Whoops, my mistake. You still can't.

Whereas, a 15th level druid will have better, more versatile (and reliable, even in the deepest desert) spellcasting, poison immunity, disguise self at will, Agelessness, plant wildshaping, an animal companion etc.

Becoming a Blighter means you never can leave a forest again.
Advancing a Druid means you're worth something. Druids have healing spells!

In response ...

1. Yes you are behind at lower levels. But you catch up and eventually surpass.
2. Deforestation works directly off of blighter level, so is you have one level of blighter and x in prestige you go off of blighter. In addition you might have to go a day without spells if you cant deforest. However you dont need 8 hours of rest to recharge,so there is a tradeoff. In addition Its up to a DM to describe what is "sparse vegetation" (like mine that said grass, like a feild or lawn, would be sufficent since the other sparse terrain that are mentioned are desert and iceflow)
3. You become immune to cold. Also if your paying with offical errata that you keep your own ability scores the loss of con isint that big of a deal. so you cant fly, learn ro use burrowing animals :P
4. True it dosent say caster level wich could be a diffrence
5. Ya, subsistance is fair, but i play in a group where eveyone buys everlasting rations, so its more attractive.
6. Or if there is flamable material nearby...
7. Agreed on disease
8. That is open to interpitation. For example under spell casting it dosent say anything about the metal armor (its under the equipmrnt). It also says that it stops their druid spells, which can be interprited as spells from druid levels. blighter spells are from blighter and wouldent be effected.(this is all up to the DM, some are more leinlent and alow flavor, and others only follow the strict rules) Its their own honor code that prevents them from wearing armor, something in which the blighter dosent have. thusly he is also free to teach druidic to anyone he wants, aka profit!
9. *Sighs* DnD is playable without a healer, we do it all the time.

Other things
1. You loose the ablility to be NG but can be LE or CE, something normal druids cant.
2. Speak with dead animals has it uses.
3. Unbond has limited but temporary useful situations

In all we arnt going to agree, i like blighters, you dont. Ive played one, you probaly havent or will never. I like and will generally take flavor over function.

I'm not stopping you from taking the Blighter, I'm just explaining why I think the Blighter is less powerful than the druid, and decidedly less useful. It's abilities are very NPC-like - what with it's selfish class features* and dependance on destroying things to gain it's spells. (Really, that does suck for a Blighter to have to live in an area with nature to have any power - I imagine Blighters to live in a desert or something.) And the fact that you waste five levels.

I like the Blighter as an NPC class. The party meets up with this weathered and sullen druid-type, who wants them to take him to a sacred forest, for a pilgramage or something. He joins as a temporary party member, and using disguised wands to heal and summon monsters (From a single ranger level) he passes himself off as a druid. His animal companion? A zombie rat, disguised in leather armor that he animated himself. As soon as they reach the forest, he vanishes, and soon word is heard of wildfires and dying plantlife. Now that the Blighter has his powers back, the party must find and destroy him before he undoes the entire forest.

Good plothook? Yes. Good character? I wouldn't think so - his powers would be better if he didn't have to waste five levels of druid, though. This has given me a great idea for an adventure, though. : ) The Blighter is an AWESOME NPC class. :P

*Selfish as in, it doesn't have anything that benefits a party. All of it's abilities are based around causing harm to nature, and it loses all the nice buffs and heal spells that the druid has. It loses SNA, one of the druid's nicest spells. You go from battlefield control to blaster. :\ And you get less spells per day.

The biggest thing I don't like about it (which has already been mentioned) is the wierd imbalance of power by level. You are horribly nerfed for the first 3-4 levels of the PrC, before it starts to pick up. Even once you get the "good" abilities, you find they're not that good anyway. As a general rule, once you play a druid, there is no good reason to multiclass out (aside from RP reasons).

On a related note, because the PrC is so weak at early levels, I was able to throw a druid 5/blighter 3 agaisnt a 4th level party, which wasn't much of a challenge (certainly not CR 8). About all it was, was a wierd burning hands-casting druid-like opponent with a lot of HP.

If you're going from level 1, then planning to become a blighter is probably a bad idea, but, if you find that you're a fallen druid by some misfortune, and you don't have access to PHB II-style retraining so that you can become an ardent or whatever, then becoming a blighter is probably the best way forward. The druid levels are a sunk cost.

Does anyone think that Blighter might be a little better if you didn't have to be an Ex-Druid? I mean, it's got potential if it were fixed up a little, brought to the standards of playability - but only if you didn't have to waste five levels.

Prerequisites:
Skills: Knowledge (nature) 8 ranks,
Feats: Iron Will, Spell Focus (Fire)
Languages: Druidic
Special: Must have burnt down a small forest or similar place of nature, just to see it become a smouldering pile of ashes.

Give it abilities that prevent wildlife growing back, remove that stupid deforestation requirement for spellcasting, and more at-will abilities (temporary animate dead animals, lasting for class level+Cha minutes) change the Wis casting to Cha (seriously, blighters are probably not methodical, and off their rocker), permenant protection against nature at 10th (Fey, animal, magical beast) etc etc.

The flavor's good, but the mechanics need work. Anyone want to see a fixed Blighter?

I agree with you here. The biggest problem is that WotC wanted to maintain the ex-druid mechanic with the PrC. If instead, they just continued in their casting prorgression, it would work much better. Perhaps minor alterations to their spell list could work for flavor/balance, but it doesn't need to be drastic. Modifying other existing druid abilities, and continuing their progression would help.

Really, the funniest (translate: stupidest) thing about the PrC, is watching the power of someone who takes it. Picture these two characters:

druid 5 - 3rd level spells, animal companion, wildshape
ex-druid 5/blighter 1 - 1st level spells, 1d4 burning hands at will

Take a look at how weak your character becomes by gaining a level!

I really like this idea. I have always wanted a blighter to be the "arch nemesis" of my druid but the class needs some help. It just doesn't stack up. I would love to see a perfect mirror image of the druid/blighter just opposite ends of the spectrum. Kinda like a shadow knight/paladin. That lay on hands vs harm touch thing. The one has a counter for the other and the smarter/craftier of the two wins. It would also bring a nice flavorful PrC to the top powerwise to. I mean, let's be honest. What's stronger then a 20 druid? Not a whole lot.

I think the first big fix is to let theblighter trade in ALL of her druid levels for blighter levels and make sure she can get to a full or almost full casting progression.

Yes Khatoblepas, I would love to see the blighter redone. Even a full 20 level corelike class. I'm not the best at conversions so I wanna see what other people come up with.

The only thing I ask is that the deforestation thing goes. Maybe require a little here and there (like 20 ft a week?) to keep with the theme but a whole forest everyday is just pushing it.

Kind of like Sublime Chord from Complete Arcane, then. It's a Bard PrC, requiring 3rd level spells to enter, and then providing 4th-9th level spells over the 10 levels of the PrC.

I think that's an idea I may impliment if I ever have a blighter NPC. Continue the spellcasting progression (with obvious restrictions because of the ex-druid fluffy-ness). Also, I would say I like the deforestation ability, and that it powers spells, but I would probably alter it to have it read something like "instead of praying for spells, a blighter has to draw power from nature forcefully by using their deforestation ability on an area with a decent amount of vegetation, or on an area thta is sacred to nature somehow"

....or something like that. Which I think fixes it because it gets away from the forest requirement...and the area requirement (I don't have the book in front of me, as I'm at work).

Just my two cp.
Cheers!

what about animal sacrifice cerimonially slay a innocent animal and draw its life force out of its body and use it to sustain oneself and cast.

Well, I think part of the problem is that NO prestige class really stacks up very well to Druid/20. The CoDzilla is far too strong. Legendary Bear animal companion! Wildshape into Legendary Bear! Summon a bunch of Legendary Bears! Animal Growth on all of us! Whee! Straight Druid is just too powerful for mediocre PrCs like the Blighter.

Secondly: It seems unneccisarry. You can already BE an evil druid!

Evil Druid: Hates people, loves nature
Blighter: Hates nature too

Why! So you can go on epic crusades to destroy forests? It's just entirely unneccisarry.

Personally I too put them firmly in the "NPC" catagory.

Is there anyway to enter this class as a non-druid? Or at least with less than 5 lvls in druid?

This might not be RAW, but it could work. ex-druid1/spiritshaman5/blighter1

So, spirit shamans cast of the druid spell list. your an ex-druid and you cast 3rd lvl spells off the druid list.
