Blood Magus question... [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-09-07, 10:29 PM I have a question about two of the Blood Magus' features:

1. Scarification (effectively gains Scribe Scroll feat)
2. Blood Draught (effectively gains Brew Potion feat)

The descriptions in the PHB say "You can create a scroll of any spell you know." and "You can create any 3rd-level or lower spell that you know..." respectively.

Now, I know it is a sin to base your character on the "Sample" characters, but that is where my question lies.

In the Sample Blood Magus description, he is a human sorcerer 6/blood magus 2. As such he has a very limited list of known spells; however, when you look at his Scarification entry, it shows a list of spells HE DOES NOT KNOW.

So my question is this - is this a mistake/misprint or does the prestige class allow [former] sorcerers to use scarification (scribe scroll feat) to prepare additional spells on top of their known ones?

07-09-07, 11:51 PM Well, considering that it also says one of the DM's choice, then the entry there is probably completely wrong.

Edit: It might have made sense if there were only two spells he didn't know (since that character would have had two choices to switch spells while he was a blood magus), but considering that he only knows one of the spells that it claims, it looks like they messed up.

Sample characters, 9 times out of 10, are flat out wrong, and are not mechanically possible. Ignore them and use the actual rules... You know... the ones the designers IGNORE when making the samples...

Sorry... But I think it's idiotic to fail so horribly at making a sample character when the rules are a couple pages back... It saddens me greatly. Though, I guess it could help explain why CustServ and Sage get the rules wrong sometimes...

It's decent, but you need True Resurrection as a plot device to actually use it. :P
