I was wondering if someone could tell me what it means when I gain a level to my pre-existing caster class through a prestige class such as Blood Magus.

Would that mean that:

Starting as a lvl 5 sorceror and gaining the Blood Magus class would make me effectively a lvl 6 sorcerer and lvl 1 Blood Magus?

Gaining "+1 level of existing spellcasting class" means you cast spells as if you were one level higher in a previous spellcasting class. A Sorcerer5/BloodMagus1 would cast spells just like a sorcerer 6 including spells known but would not gain anything else from the sorcerer.

Alright, thanks for the help. I kinda figured that's how it would be.

Now I want to kno what if i went lvl 5 sorcerer, then 10 lvls in blood magus and then up to 15 in sorcerer. I'd be casting as a 25 sorcerer or max out at 20?

I believe you would have all the spells, and known spells of a level 20 sorcerer and you would cast spells with a caster level of 25.

Assuming blood magus gives you full caster progression you'd have a caster level of 30, but you would have the spells known and spell slots of a level 20 sorcerer. I don't recall what its progression is at the moment, and I'm away from my books.

The Blood Magus is only 1/2 casting? Assuming that is the case then your epic Sorcerer20/BM10 would be casting as a 25th level sorcerer. Unfortunately I don't recall what a sorcerer's spell progression does after 20th level but I think a sorcerer gets "stuck" at 20th level casting ability.

I think he was only going to level 25... 5 sorcerer, 10 blood magus, then "up to" 15 sorcerer...not up 15 more sorcerer.

which would make him Sor 15/Blood Magus 10
Then, assuming Blood Magus has full spell progression ("+1 level of existing spellcasting class" at each Blood Magus level) then he has the spells of a level 20 Sorcerer, and the caster level of 25.

If Blood magus has "+1 level of existing spellcasting class" only every other level, then he would have the spells of a level 20 Sorcerer and the caster level of 20.

If I read that wrong, then I apologize.

3.0 Blood Magus is 1/2 progression.

If its the 3.5 Blood Magus from Complete Arcane (not sure which Magus the OP is using), then the aforementioned Sorcerer would be as follows:

Character Level: 25
Sorcerer Level 15
Blood Magus Level 10
Caster Level: 23 (25 if caster level rises even if the arcane class doesnt give +1 to level)
Spells: as level 20 Sorcerer (as I recall, spells stop accumulating at level 20 of a class)
All Blood Magus abilities
Familiar: as per Level 15 Sorcerer.

Give him the feat Practiced Spellcaster, and he'd have the full 25 caster level.
