Final Draft post #17

First I would like to thank (someone I can’t remember) for the Dark Secret ability from his Darkstar Assassin PrC. Kudo's again

Other than that be brutal  (or not) advice is always appreciated :)

My biggest concern is I think it is a bit overpowered and I am thinking of increasing the prerequisites to compensate.

Brotherhood of the Shadow

Requirements:

Alignment: Any non-lawful

Skills: Disguise 5 ranks, Hide 8 ranks, Move Silent 8 ranks.

Feats: Dodge.

Special: Sneak Attack +2d6.

Optional
The Shadows’ Vow
“I do swear that to break this vow will bring my brethren down upon me as surely as the night falls and ends the day.”
• Those who have helped us shall be safe from our contracts.
• Those that make a contract with us shall be safe from our contracts for a year and a day.
• Our contracts are not free.
• No trace of our presence shall be left at a job.
• None shall die by our hand that do not have to.

Class Features:
BAB: Average (as a rouge)
Good Saves: Reflex Poor Saves: Fort and Will
Hit Dice: 1d6

Class Skills: Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Disable Device (Int), Disguise (Cha), Forgery (Int), Gather Information (Cha), Hide (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (Local), Listen (Wis), Move Silent (Dex), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), Tumble (Dex), Use Rope (Dex).

Skill Points at Each Level: 4+ Int modifier.

LEVEL ABILITIES:

1. Sneak attack +1d6, death attack, poison use.
2. Hide in plain sight, shadow shaping.
3. Sneak attack +2d6, dark secret.
4. Shadow jump 20 ft.
5. Sneak attack +3d6, improved shadow shaping.
6. Dark secret, shadow jump 40 ft.
7. Sneak attack +4d6.
8. Shadow jump 80 ft.
9. Sneak attack +5d6, greater shadow shaping.
10. Improved evasion, dark secret.

Sneak Attack: This is exactly like the rouge ability of the same name. The extra damage dealt increases by +1d6 every other level (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th). If a brotherhood of the shadow gets sneak attack bonus from another source (such as rouge levels), the bonuses on damage stack.

Death Attack: As the Assassin in the DMG.

Poison Use: As the Assassin in the DMG.

Hide in Plain Sight (Su): At 2nd level, a brotherhood of the shadow can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as he/she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, a brotherhood of the shadow can hide him/her self from view in the open without anything to actually hide behind. He/she cannot, however use his/her own shadow.

Shadow Shaping (Sp): When a brotherhood of the shadow reaches 2nd level, he/she begins to learn to twist the surrounding shadows to his/her will. A brotherhood of the shadow must be within 10 feet of some sort of shadow for this ability to work. He/she cannot, however use his/her own shadow. This ability duplicates the effects of one of the fallowing arcane spells; dead end, disguise self, net of shadows or silent image. A brotherhood of the shadow can use shadow shaping a number of times per day equal to 3 + his/her Charisma modifier. His/her caster level is equals to his/her character level.

Dark Secret (Su): Starting at 3rd level, a brotherhood of the shadow begins to learn the ancient assassin secrets of the brotherhood. He/she may choose to learn one of the fallowing secrets. He/she may learn an additional secret at 6th and 10th level.

• Necrotic Strike: The brotherhood of the shadow learns that even the undead are vulnerable to a brotherhood of the shadow’s lethal attacks. His/her sneak attack deal normal damage to undead and he/she may attempt a death attack on an undead creature.
• Deconstruction: The brotherhood of the shadow learns that constructs can be disassembled with a brotherhood of the shadows lethal attacks. His/her sneak attack deal normal damage to constructs and he/she may attempt a death attack on a construct.
• Improved Death Attack: The fortitude save DC of a brotherhood of the shadow’s death attack increases by 2. This secret may be taken more than once, its effects stack.
• Overcome Regeneration: The brotherhood of the shadow learns that even creatures with remarkable healing properties are susceptible to a brotherhood of the shadow’s lethal attacks. A brotherhood of the shadow’s sneak attack and death attack ignores the damage reduction of creatures with regeneration and affects them normally.

Shadow Jump (Su): At 4th level, a brotherhood of the shadow gains the ability to travel between shadows as if by means of a dimension door spell. The limitation is that the magical transport must begin and end in an area with at least some shadow. He/she cannot, however use his/her own shadow. A brotherhood of the shadow can jump up to a total of 10 feet per class level each day in this way, to a maximum of 100 feet at 10th level. This amount can be split among many jumps, but each one, no matter how small, counts as a 10-foot increment. For example, an eighth level brotherhood of the shadow that jumps 74 feet cannot jump again until the next day.

Improved Shadow Shaping (Sp): At 5th level, a brotherhood of the shadow learns how to further manipulate the shadows. He/she may now duplicate the effects of blur, invisibility, mirror image or shadowy double using the shadow shaping ability (using this ability uses up 2 uses of his/her shadow shaping).

Greater Shadow Shaping (Sp): At 9th level, a brotherhood of the shadow has mastered the skill of manipulate the shadows. He/she may now duplicate the effects of displacement, major image, pall of twilight or shadow binding using the shadow shaping ability (using this ability uses up 3 uses of his/her shadow shaping).

Improved Evasion (Ex): This ability, gained at 10th level, works like evasion. A brotherhood of the shadow takes no damage at all on a successful saving throw against attacks that allow a Reflex saving throw for half damage (breath weapon, fireball and so on). Furthermore, he/she takes only half damage even if he/she fails her saving throw.

Hmmm this class melds the shadow dancer with assassin and makes them able to sneak attack/[b]DEATH ATTACK[b] undead and constructs??? This is to powerful.....way to powerful.

I suggest changing this to a 5 level PrC dropping death attack and shadow step altogether and make them sort of an archmage of rogues. Give them dark secrets(high arcana) and those can be special sneak attack options(like trading sneak attack dice to affect undead and constructs). But as is this is waaaaay to powerful.

What would you think if I rose the prereqs and took out poison use and limited the Shadow Jump to say 20 feet at 4th level, 40 at 7th and 6o feet at 10th level?

Requirements:

Skills: Disguise 8 ranks, Move Silent 10 ranks, Hide 10 ranks, Knowledge (arcane) 4 ranks.

As well as those already listed

And changing the Dark Secret abilities to not affect the Death Attack and in order to use each secret you have to sacrifice sneak attack damage to activate it.

Yeah death attack on constructs/undead is just way to much lol. Thats instant kill either. -sneak attack dice in order to use those abilities should work fine and yes reducing shadow jump would work. I'm not sure about the death attack, it doesn't really fit well with my idea of the class. I'd replace it, thats just me though.

The reason for the death attack is that this is my attempt at a “ninja” like PrC, kind of like the shadow manipulating shinobi type deal.

Thanks for the help

I would increase the amount of sneak attack sacrificed to be allowed to sneak attack undead and constructs by 1 or 2 dice. If you really want them to be able to death attack constructs and undead, you're going to have to increase their save or something. Constructs have all bad saves, so really at best they are going to have a 6 or so fort save, thats just way to easy for them to fail the save. And monsters like liches are also going to have poor fort saves so a high level lich might have around 10+(thats if hes got some magical gear to boost it)

Maybe make it another ability to death attack undead/constructs that requires the other dark secret as a prerequisite. That would be fair I think.

I think the shadow shaping ability is encroaching to much on the true assassin prestige class, I'd tone it down. Its not as big a selection of spells as assassins get but it allows them to use alot of useful ones. I'd also make it int based. To tone it down I think I'd limit the spells a little more and make them all have shadow descriptor and be canceled by light spells.

I don’t think you noticed that they have to trade sneak attack damage just to sneak attack. In order to Death Attack they have to forgo all sneak attack damage, but as you said making another Dark Secret to do a Death Attack sounds fair to me.

Maybe make it another ability to death attack undead/constructs that requires the other dark secret as a prerequisite. That would be fair I think.

I will probably require that the have both the “hurt” undead/construct Secret in order to take the “final” secret.

I've been thinking the same thing any suggestions on spells to get rid of I was thinking of dead end, invisibility and displacement.

What do you think?

• Necrotic Strike: The brotherhood of the shadow learns that even the undead are vulnerable to a brotherhood of the shadow’s lethal attacks. A brotherhood of the shadow may trade 3d6 sneak attack damage to have his/her sneak attack effect an undead creature normally.
• Deconstruction: The brotherhood of the shadow learns that constructs can be disassembled with a brotherhood of the shadows lethal attacks. A brotherhood of the shadow may trade 4d6 sneak attack damage to have his/her sneak attack effect a construct normally.

• Death to the Undying: A brotherhood of the shadow must have both the Deconstruction and Necrotic Strike dark secret to take this secret. You may now forgo all sneak attack damage to attempt a death attack against an Undead creature or a Construct. However, the target still receives a +2 to there Fortitude save to resist death.
• Improved Death Attack: The fortitude save DC of a brotherhood of the shadow’s death attack increases by 2. This secret may be taken more than once, its effects stack.

This looks good, by the time they finish a 20th level character should be able to hit undead for a good 7d6 sneak attack and 6d6 vs constructs(very reasonable). I think its a fair trade off, to specialize in killing undead/constructs. Its pretty powerful but not overly so.

For the shadow shaping I'm not sure what I'd do to it yet. I'll look through my books and get back to you on it.

I also looked thru my books and these are the new spell I came up with:

Shadow Shaping; Dead End, Disguise Self and Silent Image.

Imp. Shadow Shaping; Veil of Shadow, Mirror Image and Shadowy Double.

Greater Shadow Shaping; Blacklight, Major Image or Shadow Binding.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this.

My suggestion is take out silent image/major image/mirror image. I believe in this case they works to well. I'd go for spells that are useful but less general since they can use these abilities spontaneously.

Maybe something like distract(SC),snuff light(Drow of the underdark), smoke stairs(CS), assassins darkness(CS)

I’ve been thinking the same thing, those spells seem to take away from the flavor somehow.

What do you think of these:

Shadow Shaping; Dead End, Disguise Self and Distract.

Imp. Shadow Shaping; Veil of Shadow (same as Blur just more flavor oriented), Darkness and Shadowy Double.

Greater Shadow Shaping; Blacklight (same as assassin's darkness), Shadow Form and Shadow Binding.

Also, just curious why Int instead of Chr?
IdleAltruism

08-15-07, 09:21 PM
Death attack is based off INT, although some MAD could help balance this class out a bit.

I can't get to my books but that looks good. I'm not sure about shadow form/binding because I don't remember what they do.
Mordin

08-15-07, 11:07 PM
Form gives bonuses to hide/move and some others and lets you pass through solid objects

Binding is a spell that entangles targets in area

MAD??

And did you mean Int for Shadow Shaping number of times per day or the save DC or both?
IdleAltruism

08-16-07, 12:10 AM
Those spells look fine.

MAD=Multiple Attribute Dependency

Basically it means that the class relies on more then one key attribute.

Well usually you want to base the abilities on one attribute for a lower caster(especially one as limited as this). There are cases were casting can be based on two attributes but these are usually for full caster classes.

If you made this class use charisma for casting shadow shaping it would need dex/int/cha(they wouldn't need a really high CHA just a decent CHA item) That should work.
Mordin

08-16-07, 05:41 PM
So in your opinion using MAD is probably the best way to balance this class:

So,

Int for Death Attack.

Chr for the number of times Shadow Shaping can be used as well as the save DC for those spells.

Dex for everything else.

I would like to thank you for all the help by the way its been awesome input thanx
