Hello everyone. This is my first post of a relatively original PrC idea that I've been kickin' around in my brain for sometime. Would certainly love some feedback. Please be critical, but also be kind. :)

Note: This PrC assumes that you are using the Monk Variant: Fighting Styles from Unearthed Arcana.

Budoken v2.0
"I see that you follow the way of the Hand and Foot...Let's see how it compares with my Ghost Fist..." -- Jing Ke, Budoken and master of the Ghost Fist Style and Passive Way style.

Budoken are warrior-philosophers who dedicate their entire life to mastering unarmed combat systems. They are the peerless martial artists who are often confused with their monk counterparts, and indeed, many budoken have a monastic background. However, whereas a monk seeks spiritual enlightenment through physical perfection, a budoken becomes physically perfect through the relentless pursuit of perfecting their chosen martial art forms. It is through this perfecting of skills that budoken learn to focus their ki and become living weapons. Followers of this path are single-mindedly devout in their belief of self, bordering on proud and self-righteous. They hold personal honor, and the honor of their teachers and that of their respective fighting schools in the utmost regard, and will go to great length to not allow any disrespect toward either. They are not the typical wizened sage atop the mountain, nor are they the cloistered elder who never sets foot beyond the walls of his monastery. Rather, they are the wandering knight-errant who fights for the justice of the people; they are the ruthless bandit-king who uses their skills to pillage and plunder and murder; they are the crouching tigers and hidden dragons in the kung-fu world who hold their own place and reputation amongst other fighters based on the strength and speed of their fists and feet.

Hit Die: d8
Requirements:
To qualify to become a budoken, a character must fulfill the following criteria:
Feats: Improved Natural Attack
Special: Ki Strike (magic) class feature

Class Skills:
A budoken's class skills (and key attribute for each) are: Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Escape Artist (Dex), Jump (Dex), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), Tumble (Dex)
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Level BAB Ref Fort Will
------------------------------
1 +1 +2 +2 +0
2 +2 +3 +3 +0
3 +3 +3 +3 +1
4 +4 +4 +4 +1
5 +5 +4 +4 +1

Level Special Abilities
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Monk Abilities, Bonus Feat
2 Bonus Feat
3 Ki Strike
4 Bonus Feat (style mastery)
5 Fists of Fury or Devastating Strike

Class Features:
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Budokens do not gain any additional weapon or armor proficiency.

Monk Abilities: At first level, a budoken's class levels stack with her monk levels when determining her ac bonus, unarmed strike damage, flurry of blows/decisive strike progression, fast movement, and stunning fist/day.

Bonus Feats: At 1st level, a budoken chooses another fighting style they wish to master, thus predetermining her bonus feat selections granted at 1st, 2nd and 4th levels of this class, respectively. In turn, at 1st level, they gain a +2 bonus to the style's preferred skill, and at 4th level, should they meet their chosen fighting style's prerequisites, they gain a bonus ability (normally granted at a monk's 6th level). Should their newly chosen style grant a bonus feat the character already possesses, they instead gain an additional +3 bonus to the style's skill focus.

Ki Strike (Su): At 3rd level, a budoken gains another quality of their choice that affects their unarmed strike for purposes of bypassing a creature's damage reduction and/or hardness rating. The qualities a budoken may choose from are: adamantine, byeshk, cold iron, epic, good, evil, lawful, mithiril, and silver.

Fists of Fury or Devastating Strike (Ex): At 5th level and above, a budoken's reputation as a living weapon is known far and wide, and for good reason:

Fists of Fury: Should the character have the Flurry of Blows ability, then at 5th level the budoken gains an additional attack that she can make at her highest base attack bonus when making a Flurry of Blows. This extra attack stacks with the Greater Flurry of Blows monk ability. Also, during a Flurry of Blows, should the budoken strike a single opponent with multiple, successive strikes then she adds her dexterity bonus as damage bonus for each successive strike. For example, a 6th level monk/5th level budoken has the Fists of Fury ability of: +9/+9/+9/+9/+4 when she uses a FAA to flurry her opponent. Her 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th attack hits, but her 4th misses. She adds her Dex bonus (as well as her normal damage modifiers) to her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd strikes, but not for her 5th strike because it hit out of sequence. Fists of Fury functions exactly like Greater Flurry in all other aspects.

Devastating Strike: Should the character have chosen Decisive Strike in lieu of Flurry of Blows, then at 5th level a budoken gains an additional attack that she can make at her highest base attack bonus when making her Decisive Strike. This extra attack stacks with the extra attack gained from Greater Decisive Strike (monk's 11th level ability). Further, the budoken may use this extra attack to target an opponent she already struck with her Decisive Strike ability, and she adds her Wis bonus (if any) to damage for each successful Devastating Strike (including her other normal damage modifiers). Lastly, she gains a +4 bonus to the DC of her Stunning Fist (instead of the +2), should she use her Stunning Fist ability with Devastating Strike. Devastating Strike functions exactly like Decisive Strike in all other aspects.

Multiclass Note: Monks who mutliclass into this PrC may continue advancing as monks.

Caveat: For those whose campaigns do not use the fighting styles from UA: Include as a prerequisite the feat: Versatile Strike. Also, at 1st, 2nd, and 4th levels a budoken chooses a bonus feat from the following list: Close-Quarters Fighting, Defensive Throw, Earth's Embrace, Eagle Claw Attack, Extra Stunning, Fiery Fist, Fiery Ki Defense, Fists of Iron, Flying Kick, Freezing the Lifeblood, Greater Kiai Shout, Improved Trip, Karmic Strike, Kiai Shout, Ki Blast, Leap of the Heavens, Pain Touch, Rapid Stunning, Robilar's Gambit, Roundabout Kick, Snap Kick, Versatile Unarmed Strike, Watter Splitting Stone, and Weakening Touch.

The budoken must meet the prerequisites in order to take any feat presented here, but they have greater flexibility overall in choosing how to create their own unique fighting styles, as their feat selections are not predetermined.

Sample Encounter: Jing Ke can often be found traveling the city walks of Sharn (in Eberron, or in any other campaign-based major city). He is an enigmatic figure who has come to this metropolis seeking something known only to him. He is young looking, with tanned olive skin, and normally garbed in monk's robes spun of darkweave cloth. Most striking about him, are his completely white hair, worn shoulder length, and ice blue-colored eyes.

Reserved for Original Fighting Styles:

Deity of Wind Kick
The deity of wind kick was named after one of the masters of Storm Court. To master this style of combat is to master the very nature of movement itself. Deity of wind kick is a method of combat that focuses on cultivating speed and agility to near supernatural levels through exotic and esoteric training exercises that condition the body for the quick, graceful, and beautiful kicking skills that are the primary weapon for a monk of this style. Local folklore says that practitioners travel to the very peaks of mountain tops, where the gale winds and thunderstorms are the fiercest. There, they spend countless hours mimicking the unpredictable wind patterns, and cultivating their ki so as to harness the very wind itself when engaging opponents.

In combat, a monk practitioner of deity of wind kick quickly engages her enemy, dodging and confounding her opponent's attack like the gentle swaing of a willow on a summer's breeze, then counter-attacking with her glorious and lightning-like kicking skills with all the force of a thunder storm; continuous and unrelentiing.
Skill bonus: Jump
1st level feat: Dodge
2nd level feat: Mobility
6th level feat: Spring Attack
6th level bonus ability: Catch Wind and Seize Shadow: A practitioner of deity of wind kick may act as if under the effects of a haste spell for a total number of rounds per day equal to 1/2 her monk level. The rounds need not be consecutive, and she can choose each round (as a free action) whether to use this ability or not.
Prerequisites: Jump 9 ranks, Improved Initiative

Ghost Fist
Ghost fist was developed by a Githzerai monk who had reached a pinnacle in his ki development and spiritual contemplation. So attuned was he to the flow of ki, that he could instinctively feel where to place his most damaging strikes, and could even bypass magical fortification.
Skill Bonus: Balance
1st Level Feat: Stunning Fist
2nd Level Feat: Weapon Focus (Unarmed Strike)
6th Level Feat: Weapon Specialization (Unarmed Strike)
6th Level Bonus Ability: Voracious Ghost Fist: Once per day/5 monk levels a ghost fist stylist may resolve her unarmed strikes as melee touch attacks. This is a swift action to activate, and the duration is for 1 round.
Prerequisites: Balance 9 ranks, Sublime Form

Jeet Kune Do
Translated as the Way of the Intercepting Fist, jeet kune do, while being directly descended from wing chun kuen, is a brilliant amalgamation of several other styles of combat seamlessly blended into one philosophy. It's creator, Bruce Lee (nicknamed Little Dragon for his unparalleled martial prowess), was a deservedly famous martial arts master who was frustrated by the confines and limitations associated with what learning a 'style' of martial art precipitated, and strove to break away from such traditional-minded thinking. Jeet kune do's philosophy is thus: 'Using no way as way, having no limitations as limitation.'

In combat, a practitioner of jeet kune do instinctively anticipates the attacks of their opponent and uses perfectly timed counterpunches, rapid-fire chain combinations of the fist and foot, and elusive footwork to neutralize their opponent's attack the moment before they attack, thus disrupting their opponent's rhythm, and often times decisively ending the fight before it truly begins
Skill bonus: Sense Motive
1st level feat: Weapon Focus (unarmed strike)
2nd level feat: Close-Quarters Fighting
6th level feat: One-Inch Punch
6th level Bonus Ability: Tao of the Fist: During combat, a jeet kune do practitioner gains an additional +2 to attack rolls vs. opponents who have a lower initiative score than she does, and +4 vs. flat-footed opponents who also have a lower initiative total than she.
Prerequisites: Sense Motive 9 ranks, Improved Initiative feat.

Movement of the Nine Suns
The movement of the nine suns style is a close relative of wushu in that it, too, utilizes intricate footwork combined with dizzying aerial acrobatics and spinning kicks to engage opponents. Monks practice this art while atop narrow wooden poles, tumbling and spinning from one post to another. So attuned are they to being mid-flight during their kicking drills, that when they leave the ground to perform one of their signature flying spin kicks, they are able to attack multiple opponents in the blink of an eye before touching earth once more.

In combat, it's practitioners are a blur of constant motion, aggressively closing with their opponents and using their speed, flexibility, and precise body positioning to dodge incoming attacks. The kicking skill of a master of the movement of the nine suns is said to rival those who practice the deity of wind kick. However, whereas deity of wind kick stylists flow like the very wind itself, subtle and ever changing, movement of the nine suns practitioners are akin to a flight of dragons, deliberate and powerful with each action.
Skill bonus: Tumble
1st level feat: Power Attack
2nd level feat: Roundabout Kick
6th level feat: Flying Kick
6th level bonus ability: Hell Dragon's Stroke: During combat, a monk who studies movement of the nine suns may execute a Whirlwind Attack as a standard action, even if she doesn't meet the prerequisites to use a normal Whirlwind Attack. However, using Hell Dragon's Stroke is a very difficult and draining ability that can only be performed once per day/4 monk levels.
Prerequisites: Tumble 9 ranks, Acrobatic

Nin-Ansatsuken
Nin-Ansatsuken is an unarmed combat system which incorporates the most violent techniques from a blend of four mysterious styles of ancient and deadly martial arts. Only one living master is said to still teach the Art, Gouken. Nin-Ansatsuken, or "Murderous Assasin's Fist", is an art created for the brutal destruction of one's enemies, but Gouken has vowed to teach a less violent variation of the art created by his master Goutetsu, which does not include the discipline's life-threatening techniques such as the Shun Goku Satsu. Instead, Gouken teaches that the study of nin-ansatsuken is the journey of the soul to discovery one's inner warrior and fighting spirit. As such, it's development of a monk's ki is unsurpassed, and a monk trained by Gouken is a warrior to be feared indeed.
Skill Bonus: Concentration
1st level feat: Stunning Fist
2nd level feat: Fiery Fist
6th level feat: Ki Blast
6th level bonus ability: Hadouken: When a monk initiates her ki blast ability, it now only costs one stunning fist use (instead of 2). However, she may augment her ki blast, making it a far stronger and more spectacular attack. For every use of her stunning fist she imbues, she may increase her ki blast damage by +1d6. She may spend additional stunning fist uses up to her Wis bonus (if any) to augment her ki blast. Creating and augmenting the ki orb in this fashion takes a full-round action, and she must initiate her attack with it before the end of her next turn, which can be done as a standard action.
Prerequisites: Concentration 9 ranks, Ability Focus (Stunning Fist)

Sky Frost Fist
The sky frost fist is a style of martial art named after the sworn brother of Nie Fong and Bu Jie Yun. Frost died during one of the last battles in the Great War, while heroically defending a small fishing village from an invading orc horde. It is said Frost's martial art was an overwhelming display fist-striking combinations and that to face a practitioner of this art is to face the very chilling cold of an arctic storm. Indeed, rumor holds that a monk who studies the sky frost fist is taken to the firgid mountains of the north to practice the forms and skill-sets of this art day and night, wearing nothing but a loin cloth. In this way, they harden their bodies and steel their minds to prepare for martial combat, and their ki harnessess the lethal elements of the cold. Truly, they become the very embodiment of winter: brutal and unrelenting in their attacks.

In combat, a practitioner of the sky frost fist will rush to engage their opponent, utilizing linear fist strikes and circular parrying to attack and defend, as they try to continually impose their will on the fight.
Skill bonus: Concentration
1st level feat: Stunning Fist
2nd level feat: Combat Reflexes
6th level feat: Improved Critical (unarmed strike)
6th level bonus ability: Clumsiness by Condensed Frost: Declare that you are using this ability before you make your attack roll (thus, a missed attack roll ruins the attempt). Against a humanoid opponent, you can make a stunning attack that deals normal damage and has a chance of staggering your target. If your attack is successful, your target must attempt a For SV (DC 10 + 1/2 your character level + Wis modifier). If the target fails this SV, it is stunned for one round, as normal, but it is also staggered for 1d4 rounds after. Clumsiness by condensed frost costs a monk two uses of her daily allowances of her Stunning Attack. Creatures immune to being stunned also cannot be staggered in this manner.
Prerequisites: Concentration 9 ranks, Fists of Iron.

Twilight Fist of Li Shen
The Twilight Fist of Li Shen is a martial art shrouded in mystery. If legend is to be believed, it is one of several original styles of combat created by Li Shen the Ascended. Truly, this is a style for the educated; a practitioner of this martial art is thoroughly versed with advanced medical texts and anatomical charts of the body. Monks of this style also spend a great deal of time meditating and practice slow, intricate maneuvers of this form to become heavily attuned to the ebb and flow of ki. It is said that a practitioner of this art can see the very auras and ley-lines of ki that surround and arc and connect all living things.

In combat, practitioners of the twilight fist combine this attunement with their encyclopedic knowledge of the body's critical weak points to deploy devastating and debilitating hand strikes to her opponents.
Skill bonus: Knowledge (arcana)
1st level feat: Stunning Fist
2nd level feat: Painful Touch
6th level feat: Ring the Golden Bell
6th level bonus ability: Unending Twilight: A monk who masters this martial art gains a permanent increase of +2 to the DC of her Stunning Fists.
Prerequisites: Knowledge (Arcana) 9 ranks, Kung Fu Genius

Note: Ring the Golden Bell and Kung Fu Genius were feats presented in the May 2004 issue of Dragon Magazine (under Warriors of the Animal Fist).

Reserved for Original Feats:

One-Inch Punch (General)
Certain masters of the martial arts prefer to demonstrate their control of ki by being able to generate tremendous amounts of kinetic force using only the most minimal of movements.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Wis 13, Improved Unarmed Strike, Stunning Fist, Improved Critical (Unarmed Strike)
Benefit: You must declare that you are using this ability before you make your attack roll (thus, a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). If you damage your opponent with your unarmed attack, the foe must make a successful Will SV (DC 10 + 1/2 your character level + your Wis bonus) or be hurled back 10ft. as if thrown by the violent thrust version of a telekinesis spell. If the creature is hurled against a solid surface, it takes additional damage as if it had fallen 10ft. (1d6 points). Using this ability counts as a single use of your Stunning Fist feat.

Sublime Form (General)
You posses a near supernatural understanding of the martial arts and fight with a grace, beauty, and precision that few can match.
Prerequisites: Wis 13, Improved Unarmed Strike, base attack bonus +1
Benefit: Whenever you are both unarmored and unemcumbered, you may use your Wisdom modifier instead of your Strength modifier on your unarmed attack rolls.

Personally, I'd suggest removing Superior Unarmed Strike. The feat becomes worthless at higher levels because Unarmed Strike Damage increases end at level 20 which means a character with Monk abilities that reach level 17 or higher gain no benefit at all from the feat.

Sublime Form already exists in BoED. Intuitive Attack, I believe it's called. Actually, it's easier to qualify for than what you put down. Although I see the point in what you made, since not everyone has that book, just letting you know.

Also, for the Ki Strike ability, don't allow both Good and Holy. I'd suggest just allowing Good. Not sure about some of the material options either, but that's probably not as important.

Very cool idea though. I personally really like the monk fighting styles, and this prestige class is a natural extension of that.

I'd heard Intuitive Attack mentioned in a couple of threads, but I don't own BoED. Makes sense that Wizards would already have a Finesse like feat, but for Wis.

I wanted to allow the different material options for ki strike, bc in some works of fantasy I've read, and in other rpg's, the warrior-monks were also the liaisons between the natural world and the spiritual and fey worlds. I know specifically that cold-iron effects fey, so I thought it might be appropriate for those budoken who wish to fill that particular role.

Thanks for your kind words. You get the soul of what I was trying to make with this PrC.

And, that makes me quite :)

Alright, I can see the natural/spiritual connection there. Sort of makes sense. Monks are all about physical and spiritual perfection, after all.

Plus a monk with Ki Strike (Silver) knocking the teeth out of a werewolf is a fun mental image. Preferably with a roundhouse kick. (You should still take holy off the list, IMHO.)

As for getting the soul of it, well, calling myself even a 1st level monk would be egotistical, but I take Tae Kwon Do, I've learned a little bit of Hap Ki Do (not nearly as much as I'd like), and my school just started up a grappling/submission art called Rohndo on the side. Perfecting a fighting style while developing another along with it makes sense for me in a prestige class because I've done it and I know people who have done it in real life.

Holy is officially scratched from the list.

Studied martial arts when I was younger for a number of years. The last art was called wu trin do, and it is a lot like jeet kune do, but with more grappling; a real mixed martial art style, before mma became so popular.

Keep up with your studies, mate. Wish I did.

Ah, MMA. When done correctly, a beautiful fusion of styles.

When done incorrectly, sloppy and disgraceful to the practitioner. (Have you seen any of that UFC crap? God, some of them are just... sloppy! No excuse for it.)

Iarmeister, I gotta say that when I saw these, I was really impressed by the detail you went into with it, giving the styles a basis in a campaign, but leaving it sufficiently vague that it could really be dropped into just about any setting. GREAT flavor to these.

The other piece I liked as well were the bonus abilities for mastery of the styles, some of the abilities are really well thought out and interesting. I'd play one of these variant monks over a standard monk or even a UA variant monk. You got me all excited to start working on my homebrew variants again!

Again, great work!

p.s. and the Budoken PrC. Totally sweet.

Saying thank you for the compliments is waaay over due, nyluenatha, but let me say it anyway: THANK YOU! :D

I'm very fond of the way this PrC turned out, as well as the creativity that flowed when designing the support styles and feats.

I'm planning another character for an Eberron campaign that goes from level 5 - 10, and I'm starting at mnk4/ssage1, but I'm seriously considering taking budoken for all 5 levels at some point in that build.

Thanks again, N.

And, yea, there's been some Monk threads poppin' up recently so...
