ok just out of curiosity who here would play (in lets say a 6th lvl campaign) a commoner 5/ horizon walker 1?

it would be awesome to RP a char like this IMHO.

go profession courier. with the desert terrain mastery.

immunity to fatigue would be interesting.
i guess what i mean is that does any one think it would be interesting to play a commoner/horizon walker?

REQ:
knowledge (geography) 8 ranks
feat: endurance

Knowledge (geography) isn't a class skill for commoners.

Without the Education feat or something to put the knowledge on your class skills list, it's not doable.

Personally I think it's a terrible idea anyway, someone exploration-focused enough to develop the specialized abilities of a horizon walker should probably have found their way into a PC class by then, or be dead from meeting something exotic they couldn't handle.

In fact, I'm also kinda bothered by the horizon walker's planar terrain masteries when the class is obviously geared toward warrior types (who aren't going to be plane shifting on their own) and doesn't gain any ability to get to alternate planes itself. Awhile back a workaround hit me, though, creatures with the Shadow Creature template (Libris Mortis) can potentially plane shift once a day by their racial features. I think a shadow human planar ranger 6/horizon walker 10/rogue 1/fighter 1 (not in that order) could be pretty fun.

its possible grab the able learner feat as a human commoner.

can grab both at 1st level.

along with 2 flaws can get you 2 other feats as well.

i dont really need to hear that it doesnt sound strong enough.

im not looking to power game this pc.

im looking for a fun rp chance.
whos to say a commoner couldnt travel extensively and survive?

merchants, highwaymen, nomads, entertainer(not all are bards), etc

you know what i mean, its for an interesting game not a slay the evil dragon and save the kingdom style hack n slash game

What books are allowed?

who's to say a commoner couldn't travel extensively and survive?*
Since Role playing and mechanica are mutually exclusive, that makes no sense.

*mechanically it would be very difficult without a lot of help.

Powergaming: Because you can't roleplay when you're dead.Seriously a character's not going to live very long in exotic locales as a commoner without DM fiat or blind luck. Of course if you've got DM fiat keeping you alive, anything is good enough, but it really seems pointless to me (and I find living on DM fiat distasteful).

As for whether the idea is inherently interesting: no, it is not. The player brings the roleplay to the table, not the class. Commoner/Horizon Walker is no more interesting than Anything/Horizon Walker, and just about anything else would be more believable.

I think it's a good idea, but I think a better idea would be to play the Expert Class.

ok obviously it was taken that i thought the class was what makes rp fun.

lemme put it this way. i normally play a fighter. which ostensibly isnt a commoner. i am interested in playing this in an "all commoner campaign" which means everything has been appropriately scaled.

By fun to rp i meant something new and thought out. something that i havent done before and that I AM interested in playing. the fact that its a commoner only means that this is your average guy (your joe wood if you will)

all that matters is that im interested in it and that i believe i could play it, and be effective. i merely am asking what others think of it in a theoretical sense. its not a full power campaign so i believe itll be fun.

johnny gets it :)

So, what are you asking exactly? Would I like to play a Commoner? Not really.

You want to play a Commoner/Horizon Walker, great! Have fun with it. :)

I think that this thread would probably be better off on the Character Development board.

As I said before, what books are allowed for use? I want to help but answering this question would help a lot.

I'd definately go the expert route. I know you're looking for a roleplay experience, and that's great, but going expert would make it much easier to qualify for the Horizon Walker PrC. Experts get to pick 10 skills to be their class skills.

its commoners only tho :)

dm's discretion

only commoners ;p

and as far as i can tell this is the only PrC commoners can qualify for before lvl 10 (besides dervish figure that out)

since we starting with standard npc stats (10,11,11,10,10,11) or w/e

Commoners qualify for the Survivor PrC at level 1.

I'm sure there are others that they can qualify for well before level 10.

I like this idea, sure it will be hard, but meh, you will be able to do it.
All you gotta do is choose a race, I suggest changling.
have fun =D

why not use the Human Paragon class?

A commoner can also qualify for Warrior Skald. ;)

Love the concept. However, unless I'm missing some errata on Able Learner, it specifically says that things are still cross-class. Thus, you would still have to be a 13th level commoner to qualify.

I think I got it*

Level-Class-Feats/special-Skills

Race:Human Place highest stat in Int,Dex,con, wis, cha str

1- Commoner lv1-Lighting Reflexes and Iron Will/SWP(club, quarterstaff, or sling[use rocks for ammo])-use skill points on listen and spot

2- Human Paragon lv1-Adaptive learning (UMD**)/choose 10 skills(make one Know(geography))-spend skill points in your knowledge and Umd**

3- Human Paragon lv2-feats what ever you want you get two (now is the time for getting Endurance)- skills in knowledge and umd**

4- Human Paragon lv3-Ability increase (Int) and the paragon allows for a boost for an ability score too (Int)

5-Commoner lv2-None-cross class points to know geography

6- Horizon walker 1-have fun

BAB +4
Fort +3
Ref + 3
Will +5

*100% srd
** or this can be Diplomacy

[bonus section]
you can also blow 2 skill points for "spot the weak point" skill trick and use it when you are not in your favorable terrain.

I'd say use expert instead of commoner, it makes more sense. We only use commoners for the poor folk or farmers and the like. Experts are people with more complex jobs

For Pete's sake, read the entire thread before you post! This was already addressed multiple times.
