Deepstone Sentinel isn't full BAB? WTF? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-29-08, 04:37 PM I'm not a big dwarf guy, so I never paid a ton of attention to the Deepstone Sentinel PrC (I'm more an Eternal Blade or Master of Nine kinda guy). But I actually took a look at it the other day...and it has 3/4 BAB.

Does this make any sense? The class requires you to have +10 BAB just to get in! It's all about being a dwarvish uber-warrior (I mean, even the dwarf paragon gives you full BAB...)!

I thought it might be a balance issue...but compare the Deepstone Sentinel to the Bloodclaw Master:

Both have 3/4 BAB, 2 skpts per level, and the same extra maneuvers known/granted. Their special class abilities are fairly comparable, I think.

But the Bloodclaw gets d12 HD to the DS's d10, and gets 2 good saves to the DS's one. Huwhah?

As a final, you can get into BCM after 6 lvls (I think), whereas you need 10 levels (and maxing Balance) to get into DS. Not to mention just about ALL the ToB PrCs give you full BAB (exceptions: BCM, DS, Master o'9, and SS Ninja)...I don't see why the Jade Phoenix Mage and the Ruby Knight Vindicator should be more about butt-kicking than the DS.

SO:

1.) Is this a goof?
2.) If it's not, does anyone see anything unbalancing about bumping up the DS to either
a.) d12 HD ('cause dwarves are tough) OR
b.) full BAB ('cause dwarves kill things)

03-29-08, 05:21 PM They did that because Stone Dragon can dish out the damage really fast. They also seem to have this whole (Direct Damage is a Sacred Cow" ideal, even though it is very sub-par.

Bumping it up to Full BAB wouldn't be that overpowering (you are adding 3 points to a PrC whose Entry Requirements can't be met until 10 level by full BAB classes, so they will always have their 4 attacks). Adding the d12 HD on its own would be a little weak.

03-30-08, 01:45 AM You could bump it up do a d20 HD and 1.5 BAB per level, and it still wouldn't be overpowered compared to the big spellcasters.

That said, within the framework of normal class balance, bumping it up to full BAB seems fine to me. And the difference between giving a PrC a d10 or d12 HD is so marginal that it hardly makes a difference which one it is - it's more of a flavor thing than anything (d12 classes represent the really physically toughest of characters. If you think the class merits a d12 HD, then by all means, give it the d12 HD).
