Dragonologist
“Few creatures are so deserving of man’s study as the mighty dragon.”

Some individuals devote their entire lives to studying the physiology, psychology, morality, history, and origin of dragons to an extent that borders on obsession. They divide their time between spending long hours in libraries reading ancient tomes and field research observing live specimens. Hardly a single moment passes during the day when dragons are not on their minds. These eccentric individuals are known as dragonologists.

Dragonologists pride themselves on being the absolute authority on everything draconic. Whether it’s how to raise them or how to sneak into their lair and slay them, they know it all; some argue that dragonologists understand dragons better than dragons themselves. While this may not be true, dragonologists do know more about them than dragonkind would like. Many a dragonslayer has succeeded because of the knowledge he gained from a dragonologist. Through their research and observation, dragonologists can unlock the secrets of fighting dragons, resisting their attacks, and even slowly become more like the great beasts themselves.

Dragonologists tend to be extremely single-minded and focused individuals. To others, they may seem obsessive or even slightly insane, but dragonologists call it devoted. They get along well with anyone who shares a similar interest in dragons, but disdain those who have no knowledge or appreciation of their power. Dragonologists get along particularly well with sorcerers, who they view as the closest a mortal can get to becoming a true dragon. Whether the sorcerers appreciate this attention or not can vary greatly depending on the individual—conflicts between the two on the issue of dragons can be deadly, usually in the sorcerer’s favor.

NPC dragonologists are usually scholars. They may be students or teachers at an academy, advisors to kingdoms who regularly encounter dragons, or simply individuals with a great personal interest in dragons. They rarely interfere directly with dragons, although they sometimes study dragons in their natural habitat or capture them for later observation, depending on the dragonologist’s alignment. A few extremely rare dragonologists may use their knowledge directly in combat, either for or against dragons.

Hit Dice: d4.

Requirements
To qualify to become a dragonologist, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Skills: Knowledge (arcana) 8 ranks, Spellcraft 8 ranks.
Language: Draconic.
Special: The character must have studied a live dragon, either in captivity or in the wild, for at least four hours per day over three months time.

Class Skills
The dragonologist’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (all skills, taken individually) (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Search (Int), Spellcraft (Int), and Use Magic Device (Cha). See Chapter 4 of the Player’s Handbook for skill descriptions.
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the dragonologist prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A dragonologist gains no proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Draconic Secret: At 1st level and every two levels thereafter (3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th), the dragonologist unlocks a secret from his studies of dragons and their ways. A dragonologist chooses this secret from any of the abilities listed below, and unless otherwise noted he may choose the same ability twice.

Secret of Arcana: The dragonologist has studied the spellcasting of dragons and has unlocked knowledge of their arcane spells. If the dragonologist previously belonged to a spontaneous arcane spellcasting class, he may select up to three spells of the highest level he may cast and add them to his list of spells known. If the dragonologist previously belonged to an arcane spellcasting class that must prepare spells, he may select up to two spells of the highest level he may cast, which he may from now on choose to spontaneously cast in place of a prepared spell, the way a good cleric may spontaneously cast a cure spell. If the dragonologist previously belonged to a divine spellcasting class, he may select one spell from the sorcerer/wizard list of up to one level lower than the highest level he is able to cast, which he may from now on spontaneously cast in place of a prepared spell, the way a good cleric may spontaneously cast a cure spell.

Secret of Breath: The dragonologist has studied the various breath weapons of dragons and their energy types, granting him energy resistance to acid, cold, electricity, or fire 5 or increasing his existing resistance by 5.

Secret of Dragoncraft: The dragonologist has studied various dragon-related items, gaining Dragoncrafter as a bonus feat. This secret may be chosen only once.

Secret of Dragonshape: The dragonologist has studied the physiology of dragons and learned to incorporate their features, gaining Dragon Wild Shape as a bonus feat. This secret may be chosen only once.

Secret of Dragonsong: The dragonologist has studied the ancient draconic singing style of dragonsong, gaining Dragonsong as a bonus feat. This secret may be chosen only once.

Secret of Dragonspeech: The dragonologist has studied the speech and influence of dragons, granting him a +2 bonus on Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Sense Motive checks.

Secret of Everlasting: The dragonologist has unlocked the secrets of draconic longevity, gaining a number of hit points equal to his total Hit Dice.

Secret of Fang and Claw: The dragonologist has studied the fighting styles of dragons, granting him a +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class against dragons and dragonblood creatures.

Secret of Heritage: The dragonologist has studied draconic heritage and discovered his own ties to their ancestry, gaining Draconic Heritage as a bonus feat, even if he is not a sorcerer. Each additional time the dragonologist chooses this secret, he may choose one of the following as a bonus feat: Draconic Breath, Draconic Claw, Draconic Flight, Draconic Legacy, Draconic Power, Draconic Presence, Draconic Resistance, or Draconic Skin.

Secret of Loyalty: The dragonologist has established a bond with a loyal dragon companion, gaining Dragon Cohort as a bonus feat. The dragonologist must be at least 9th level to select this secret. This secret may be chosen only once.

Secret of Scales: The dragonologist has studied the scales of dragons and learned their weak points, granting him a +2 bonus on attack and damage rolls against dragons and dragonblood creatures.

Secret of Sorcery: The dragonologist has studied the sorcerous abilities of dragons, granting him spell resistance equal to 5 + his character level. This secret may be chosen only once.

Secret of the Dragon Rider: The dragonologist has studied the movements and riding techniques of the dragonnels, gaining Dragon Steed as a bonus feat. This secret may be chosen only once.

Secret of the Wyrm’s Lair: The dragonologist has studied dragons and their lairs, granting him a +5 bonus on Appraise, Listen, Search, Spot, and Survival checks dealing with dragons and dragonblood creatures, their lairs, or their treasure.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: Beginning at 2nd level and ever other level thereafter, the dragonologist gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (metamagic or item creation feats, and so on). This essentially means that he adds the level of dragonologist to the level of some other spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day, spells known, and caster level accordingly.

What sources did you use to create this Prc? Also i would reccomend explaining these feats in case someone doesnt have the sources you do: Draconic Breath, Draconic Claw, Draconic Flight, Draconic Legacy, Draconic Power, Draconic Presence, Draconic Resistance, or Draconic Skin.

EDIT: Scratch that. The Heritage line of feats is from Complete Arcane, although I could have sworn they were in Draconomicon. If you don't have Complete Arcane, you could easily replace them with metamagic feats from the Player's Handbook or any other source you do have and rename the ability to secret of augmentation.

Added five new secrets: secret of arcana, secret of dragonshape, secret of dragonsong, secret of loyalty, and secret of the dragon rider. Also updated the dragonologist's spellcasting advancement so that it now applies to any spellcasting class, rather than purely arcane ones.

The four feats mentioned under secret of dragonshape, secret of dragonsong, secret of loyalty, and secret of the dragon rider are taken from Draconomicon.

I think that the Dragon Cohort and Dragonrider class features are way too powerful; you could get a dragon cohort at 6th character level and a mount at 8th. Restrict these abilities to the higher levels of the class if you want to keep them.

Secondly, most of the secrets from this class are quite weak. You might want to look at strengthening several options, and in some of the really weak ones, condensing two into one.

You can normally take the feat granted by secret of the dragon rider at 5th level, so that's no big deal. I will, however, add a level requirement to secret of loyalty.

Might I ask which secrets in particular you feel are underpowered?

sucks for wizards. Id change it so prepared arcane casters now can spontaneously substitute two spells of their highest level in exchange for a prepared one they need not have these spells in their spells known. Prepared divine casters can cast one arcane spell the same way.

Secret of Dragonspeech: The dragonologist has studied the speech and influence of dragons, granting him a +2 bonus on Bluff, Diplomacy, and Intimidate checks.

pretty weak compared to the secret of arcana and sorcerey

Secret of Sorcery: The dragonologist has studied the sorcerous abilities of dragons, granting him spell resistance equal to 5 + his character level. This secret may be chosen only once.

Probably your most balanced and quality one. i like it a lot.

Secret of the Wyrm’s Lair: The dragonologist has studied dragons and their lairs, granting him a +2 bonus on Appraise, Listen, Search, Spot, and Survival checks dealing with dragons and dragonblood creatures, their lairs, or their treasure.
Very weak compared to some of the other.

Also, whats this classes hit die?

Sounds like a more reasonable way of handling it. Thanks.

Hmmm. I'm thinking of reworking the secrets so that each one can be selected only once, and then they stack as the dragonologist gains more secrets - for example, secret of the wyrm's lair would initially grant a +2 bonus and increase by 2 for each additional secret the dragonologist has. Does this sound like it would be more balanced for these secrets, or should I increase the bonus?

Thanks. I wanted something similar to a drow's but not quite as good.

d4. It's right beneath the description, as normal, although the board formatting makes it a little hard to see without being able to indent it.

I would go with the increase the bonus given option and let them stack. Id up it to a +5 and taking it multiple times would grant a +5 or +10. It is a very specific bonus only to dragons. How often is this going to come into play? And then it is only to a few skills.

Found the D4.

Maybe an ability secret taken to increase the HP of the dragonologist. They have some decent combat options, and if they take those it would be useful to have some HP as well.

Increased the bonus to +5 on secret of the wyrm's lair, and added Sense Motive as one of the skills that secret of dragonspeech adds its bonus to (for now I'm going to leave the bonus for that at +2, since it applies to those four skills all the time, but I can increase this if it still looks too weak).

Good idea. I'm thinking either it increases the size of his Hit Dice by one step, retroactively granting him hit points for previous levels, or it grants a number of hit points equal to his Hit Dice each time it is selected - a more powerful form of Improved Toughness.

i thought increase hit die as well. Then i thought, wait, what about the people who dont take combat secrets. They are going to try to fight, why have a high hit die?

i like the solution of improved toughness or some version of it.

Added the secret of everlasting.
