| Khaira02-22-08, 03:33 PM | The following is a PrC I designed for my campaign; it's based loosely on the Legend of Dragoon PlayStation game. This is my first attempt at trying to design a PrC, so I need some advice on tweaking it. Dragoon The Dragoon is a potent warrior who is sponsored by a dragon or, in some cases, a draconic deity. This special patronage provides the warrior with draconic-sponsored abilities. Dragoons will most often be found doing some service or another for the betterment of dragon kind. HD: d8. Prerequisites: Skills: Jump 10 ranks, Balance 5 ranks, Knowledge (Religion) 5 ranks Feats: Weapon Focus (Spear, Halberd), Power Attack BAB: +8 Languages: Draconic Special: Must have performed a service for a dragon or draconic deity or must petition a dragon with a matching alignment for patronage http://www.geocities.com/r_silverwing/dragoontable.html.bmp Class Skills: Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Diplomacy (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (Religion) (Int), Knowledge (Dragonkind) (Int), Profession (Int), Spot (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Survival (Wis) Skill Points at Each Level: 4+Int. Modifier Class Features: Glide: The Dragoon gains wings capable of allowing him to glide from a distance. For every 20 feet that the Dragoon descends, he can glide forward 5 feet. Low-light Vision: The Dragoon gains the benefits of Low-light vision; he can see twice as far as a human in poor light conditions. Bonus Feat: The Dragoon gets a bonus feat selectable from the following list: Alertness, Blind-Fight, Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, Endurance, Diehard, Improved Critical, Improved Initiative, Iron Will, Cleave, Great Cleave, Toughness, Improved Toughness, Weapon Focus (Spear or Halberd), Weapon Specialization (Spear or Halberd), Greater Weapon Focus (Spear or Halberd), Greater Weapon Specialization (Spear or Halberd) Jump: The Dragoon gains the ability to make a special Jump attack. Beginning at 2nd level, the Dragoon can make a special Jump Attack. He can use this Jump Attack as many times per day, as long as he does not exceed the distance jumped. For every ten feet the Dragoon jumps, he adds +1d6 to his damage roll. Darkvision: As a benefit of his draconic patronage, the Dragoon gains Darkvision out to 60 feet. This stacks with any already current Darkvision ability. Claw Attack: The Dragoon grows claws capable of making a natural attack beginning at 3rd level, for 1d8 damage. This increases to 1d10 at 6th level, and 1d12 at 9th level. Energy Weapon: Beginning at 3rd level, the Dragoon gains the ability to infuse his weapon with an energy aura. This energy aura causes an additional 1d10 damage. The energy must match his draconic patron’s breath weapon (if his patron is a gold dragon, fire; if his patron is a silver dragon, cold; if his patron is a black dragon, acid) Favored Enemy (Dragon): Beginning at 3rd level, because of his experience dealing with dragons, the Dragoon selects a dragon type (blue dragon, black dragon, silver dragon, gold dragon, dragonne, dragon turtle, etc) as his favored enemy. When encountering his favored enemy, the Dragoon gains a +2 bonus to Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Survival checks against them. He also gains a +2 bonus to weapon damage rolls against these creatures. This bonus improves to +4 at 5th level, and +6 at 8th level. Blindsense: At 5th level, the Dragoon gains the Blindsense ability. Flight: At 6th level, the Dragoon’s wings become stronger, enabling him to fly a distance of 60 feet per day. This improves to 90 feet at 9th level. Dragonbane Weapon: At 9th level, the Dragoon earns the ability to infuse his weapon with a magical Dragonbane effect, useable a number of times per day equal to his Charisma modifier. His weapon gains an additional +2 to its attack, and it deals an extra 2d6 damage. |

First, what if the dragoon jumps down so many hundreds of feat onto a target? Yeah he may die, but he would do ungodly amounts of damage. Plus revivify spell could save him if they are right there. You need to state what range of darkvision they get if they already have darkvision as an ability. 120ft I assume. The flight ability is also way to obscure. I would go with something along the lines of the dragon born ability, with out the dive attack. P.S. However this does seem like a nice PrC. |
| Khaira02-22-08, 04:58 PM | For the Darkvision, I just stated that it does stack with current Darkvision abilities. So, if they had 60 or 80 foot Darkvision already, the 60 ft Darkvision with the PrC adds onto that (so, a total of 120 or 140, for example). The flight ability is also way to obscure. I would go with something along the lines of the dragon born ability, with out the dive attack. What do you mean by obscure, exactly? And what/where is the Dragonborn ability? I also considered just canceling out the flight ability all together, since I don't know if it might be too much or not. First, what if the dragoon jumps down so many hundreds of feat onto a target? Yeah he may die, but he would do ungodly amounts of damage. Plus revivify spell could save him if they are right there. Well ... if he falls down hundreds of feet, you said it: he'll probably die. The jump attack does not deal falling damage to the Dragoon character. (Also, the glide ability helps with the falling bit) Sorry, I'm not entirely sure where you're coming from here... |
| Khaira02-23-08, 08:37 PM | So, I guess it's perfect, eh? ;) |

Try using their write up on flight to make flight here clearer. There are things you are missing. If a person jumps off a cliff or mount, technically their are still in a jump till they hit bottom. so they might die, they still would do massive amounts of jump damage. |
| CitiesxOfxThexNight02-24-08, 01:32 PM | :D This doesn't seem so much like the Dragoon I remember that Dart, Rose were once was. :( Should maybe add in some spells, since they were able to perform such a thing when they activated there Dragoon form. Maybe being able to summon some sorta Dragon-Subtype once they reach epic leveled? I remember my characters were able to do that before I even beat the second disk. :D |

Maybe being able to summon some sorta Dragon-Subtype once they reach epic leveled? I remember my characters were able to do that before I even beat the second disk. :D The problem is that video games and D&D are on far different levels of power as mediums. Video games have always tried to create the "One Man is Army" mentality; D&D (perhaps not so much 3rd and 4th edition) have usually tried to limit that unlimited power. Also, I have not played the Legend of Dragoon game; I have made this PrC at the behest of a friend, who asked me to try to create a PrC that resembled a dragon's warrrior, with a jump attack. I concede there's a lot more that I *could* have given the Dragoon, but did not. The reason I've done this is to limit the "unlimited power". There is the dragonborn race in the races of dragon book. Try using their write up on flight to make flight here clearer. There are things you are missing. I do not have Races of Dragon. So, unless you are or can be specific, I still do not know what you are talking about. |
| DonThelonious02-25-08, 08:19 AM | I created a dragoon base class awhile back that gives specific benefits depending on the dragon type. If you are basing this PrC off of the game than you need to incorporate some sort of similar system. The dragoons in the game each had a specific "Patron" dragon, and through this they each had very unique and special abilities. Feel free to plunder my class for abilities and/or inspiration. The Dragoon |

The Dragoon Firstly, 'basing' is not always =/= to 'carbon copy replicating'. When basing classses off of different mediums, one must be aware of the power level. As I said in an earlier post, video game characters, by necessity, tend to have the power levels of "One-Man Army"; D&D, by contrast, is meant to be [sometimes forced] cooperation. Characters are not meant to be one-man armies. This is why, in the Dragoon PrC, I have limiited the abilities That being said, and secondly, the PC does acquire a dragon patron (that is a pre requisite for the prC), and does reap benefits from, a la the benefits accrued [Low Light Vision, Claw Attacks, Energize Weapon, Darkvision, Flight, Favored Enemy]. |
| serow_#R02-25-08, 10:09 AM | I'd suggest you drop the Ref and Will saves to the standard poor progression, because 3E uses those conventions, unlike other forms of d20. And I didn't finish the game, so I can't suggest anything, but a better capstone ability is needed. Your level 10 class features are just... bland. |

I'm open to suggestions? I scattered a lot of the better abilities throughout the advancement of the PrC (Favored Enemy, Blindsense, Claw Attacks, Weapon abilities) |
