Dry Lich? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-01-08, 02:51 PM I'm trying to figure something out with Dry Liches from Sandstorm. The Sere Ritual section suggests that only 10th level Walkers in the Waste can undergo the process. This might be only an implication, but it's certainly the conclusion I'm getting from the text. However, the template also comes with a +5 level adjustment and is the capstone ability of the class. Does this mean that 10th level Walkers in the Waste gain a +5 level adjustment, or is this like most similar cases (where this sort of thing is also explicitly spelled out) where taking the class levels effectively pays for the level adjustment in advance?

And I feel confident this question has been asked and answered ad nauseum, so I apologize for not being able to find the answer in the first couple of pages.

04-01-08, 04:21 PM Really now, that is interesting, I don't see any mention of any possible gaining of a LA. Well, I'd assume it follows the same template as Dragon Devotee or Dragon Disciple, but that would be very overpowered. By its self it's an alright PrC, and with this, it becomes a little too much. I'm sure if you were to suddenly become a higher ECL, they would say something (see Saint).

Also, I haven't seen it before. And I was wondering why this PrC was getting so much love.

04-01-08, 05:28 PM That'd be nice. Personally, I think the optimal option is that one can apply the template WITHOUT taking the PrC, and only in that case does the LA apply. In which case the build I'm working on jumps 10 HD, because the template was the only reason for taking the class.

04-01-08, 05:47 PM Well, it's a nice restriction on it. But then I wonder why on earth they had the monster? Or why is there no other way to gain the template? Right now there is no real reason to have the LA, other than confuse everyone. I'm going to check the errata and FAQ real quick, see if anything's there.

EDIT: There is no Sandstorm Errata, and nothing's in the FAQ.

04-02-08, 04:28 AM As I understand it, you do not gain the LA if you get through the class, just like with the Dread Necromancer.

It's a potent class, to be sure.

The LA is if you want to somehow play a Dry Lich without the Walker in the Waste PrC... though that seems hard to do!
