At 7th level and higher, if a duelist chooses to fight defensively or use total defense in melee combat, she gains an additional +1 dodge bonus to AC for each level of duelist she has.

Does the Duelists' Elaborate Parry work with Combat Expertise since Combat Expertise basically replaces the "fight defensively" action?

08-28-07, 08:09 AM I would say no. It doesn't say that you fight defensively, it just give you a better ratio if you choose to give up attack for AC.

I'd say this is more of a DM's call though.

Hmm... actually Total Defense says that it cannot be combined with either fighting defensively or with combat expertise (since both declare an attack). The Fighting Defensively entry says nothing on the subject. By the fact that Total says that it can't, and Fighting defensively makes no mention I would assume that it can stack, BUT I know I remember reading somewhere a specific mention that YES you can Fight Defensively AND employ Combat Expertise.

I wish I could find it...

08-29-07, 10:28 AM Combat expertise does not replace the fight defensively option. You can do either, or both, or neither.

There are some items and abilities that specifically state "When fighting defensively or using combat expertise" (Often requiring a minimum penalty taken for combat expertise.)

If elaborate parry does not specifically state that you can use it with Combat expertise instead of fighting defensively, then you cannot.
On the other hand, you can use fighting defensively with the elaborate parry bonus, alongside combat expertise, with both penalties and bonuses stacking.
