Please critique! Electric Prism Lightning has always been of great fascination as one of the most powerful forces in nature. Striking quickly without error indiscriminately as a rain or torment from callous eyes above, many a mage has tried to harness its power, going as far as launching themselves into the maelstrom. An Electric Prism is not so different except in one way. They have succeeded. Drawing on the true essence of lightning, an Electric Prism not only wields its might, but strikes from “seemingly” all directions… Requirements: Alignment: Any Base Attack Bonus: +7 Special: Must have a caster level of 7, be able to cast a 3rd level or high spell that deals lightning damage, and must have been struck by lightning or a spell/spell like ability to the same effect. Class Features: Storm of Torment (Sp): Through practice and raw exposure, you can wield lightning as if it where as mundane as a wooden dagger. Any number of times per day, you may fire a bolt a lightning in much the same way a warlock uses an eldritch blast. It is a ranged touch attack with a range of 50ft +10ft/class level that deals 1d6 electric damage at first level and improves by 1d6 each odd class level thereafter. (Ref half) Prism of 2 (Su): Empowered by lighting you have achieved something unthinkable. Like a bolt that splits across the sky, you can separate into unique version of yourself. As a full round action, you can split into two exact copies of yourself at the time the ability is used (this does not include items on their being except for clothing). Treat this as a separate entity from your character that the player also controls. They do not share a mental link of any kind, but respond in each others best interest and as if they have worked in unison for their entire lives. Abilities that have a restricted usage are shared with the others, for example, if you only can only cast 1 level 2 spell per day, you can only cast 1 level 2 spell between the 2 individuals. So long as one survives, as a swift action the remaining individual can channel the remaining energies of the others, leaving no trace of the bodies, to fully heal the original of all hit points, diseases, poisons, curses, or any other negative effects obtained since the original split. Each persona created by this ability cannot move beyond a distance of one mile of each other. If they do, the must make an opposed fortitude save. The one that loses is phased out of existence. An Electric prism splits into 3 people at 3rd level, 4 at 4th, etc until they reach the pinnacle of the art at level 7. Tormentors Touch (Sp): An Electric Prism learns of the power that can be induced by forcing other into direct contact with lightning. As a standard action, an electric prism can shock those in contact with them dealing 2d8 electric damage at 3rd level and an additional 1d8 damage for each odd level after. (Ref Half) Flight of Torment (Su): As an emissary of lightning, you ride the air with ease. You can fly at a speed equal to your base land speed with perfect mobility. True Torment (Su): Your ability in manipulating lightning has grown by combining your own spirit into the blast. Your class abilities and spells that would deal only lightning damage ignore any resistance to electricity a foe would have. This does not pierce through immunities though. Torments End (Su): Your precision with the use of lightning has become instantaneously fatal. When you deliver a strike with your storm of torment class ability, if that opponent is susceptible to critical hits, they must make a fortitude save equal to the damage deal plus you spellcasting class modifier or die. I wouldn't take it simply for the fact that you only get D4 hp, get no bonuses on saves until 3rd level of it, and that u only get 3 levels of spellcasting. That alone is enough to put people off taking the class. |
| Raphael_Sorel10-15-07, 02:37 PM | A prestige class having 5 or 10 levels is the standard, not the rule. Just look at the hellfire warlock of the trickster prestige classes. I did nerf the spellcasting and the saves, but thats because I think the prism ability is extremely powerful. I mean having a potential 7 standard/full actions in a round can be devastating, not to mention the class abilities itself in the end deal 4d6x7 (28d6 or 98 damage average) with them making 7 save or die rolls with no limit on usage. And if they don't kill you all at once you can heal your self and split back into 7 again. You can use you seven selves to do a number of other things as well such as guarantee your opponent is being flanked and/or is flat footed or abuse another class ability with unlimited usage (such as warlock invocations). I should probably right up a build to demonstrate... |
| korcheck10-17-07, 02:01 PM | What you could do to offset its power and at the same time address the low HP and saves could be to spread the abilities out over 10 lvl's and maybe add one more spell casting level this way. I dont believe it is to over powered in that the warlocks main ability can do damage like that as well and all of this PrCs abilities require a full round action. however the idea of throwing multiple spells at the same time is cool. Also what you might do to make it less powerful if you want is to make the split a full round action per prism thus taking seven rounds to complete or perhaps a full round action per 2 splits making it something like a three round ability to complete it (I think the math is right there lol.) |
| Raphael_Sorel10-19-07, 12:07 PM | Well... I really wanted the ability to be used in battle. Several full round actions just for the split more then kills that. It is 2 full round actions to recover and then split again after all. Again, the 7 levels are thematic with the character it was based on. I started a build, but i'm still looking around at the possibilities... Im trying to figure out the lowest level possible to get into this prestige as part of balancing it. |
