| Mark_Aged10-13-07, 04:03 PM | Okay, I tried to fix the template in my signature twice, and failed both times, so this time I'm trying to make it in to a prestige class! Tell me what you think. It's a tad campaign specific, but it has everything you need to toss it in to any campaign. G'Nawed G'Nawed (also know as G'Na and Krakencle), are creatures that have been "blessed" by the god G'Naw-Tness. G'Naw-Tness is said to be a charismatic god of tentacles that ruled over the 65th layer of the Abyss along with Lolth. Lolth wanted her own layer, but G'Naw-Tness was to powerful to challenge for control over the Layer, and she grow more and more worried that she would attempted to be killed by him with each passing day. She could move to a new Layer, but she would be to weak for awhile, and would be easy killed by G'Naw-Tness. So she decided to trick him. She secretly moved all her minions and such on to the 66th Layer, where she spin another endless web. She then told him that he can have the 65th Layer to himself and kill her with ease if he went to a "secret" location on the layer. He was very naive, so after Lolth gave him directions to the place (which was just a random spot on the layer), he set off for it. Well he was gone, Lolth killed all his G'Nawed, opened a portal for her to go to the 66th Layer, and destroyed the web behind her, causing G'Naw-Tness to fall forever in to an endless void. Some how, after eons and eons of falling, he somehow fell to the bottom of the void. There he made the bottom of the void his home plane, but had grown insane from the time he spent there. Some beings have managed to come there and see him, were he proposed a challenge, and if the competed it, he would give them a bit of his powers, making them a G'Nawed, but not under his command. Those who completed it were granted the powers, but forgot what the challenge was, so they couldn't tell others the details of the challenge. His domains are Charm, Darkness, and Shadow. He is also know as the Kraking, God of Tentacles, and Charming Tentacle. His favored weapon is the Bladed Gauntlet. His symbol is a skull with a tentacle covered in spikes coming out each socket. His alignment was CE, but his time in the void has made him LN. His insanity means his point is merely to give power to those who earned it, so Clerics of G'Naw-Tness can be any alignment. G'Nawed have to meet and be "blessed" by G'Naw-Tness by completing his challenge. The nature of the challenge is unknown, but G'Nawed only remember getting ready to start the challenge, then nothing, their memory being hazy here, then being hurt, having several scratches, chucks of flesh missing, being near dead, missing some items, some items damaged, all out of spells, etc. All of the G'Naw powers all connect or reflect or relate to G'Naw-Tness powers. Hit Die: d8 Requirements To qualify to become an G'Nawed, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Race: Can't be a construct or elemental Alignment: Any Special: Must have completed G'Naw-Tness Challenge Class Skills The G'Nawed's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Bluff (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Sleight of Hand (Dex), Swim (Str), and Tumble (Dex). Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier Level BAB Fort Ref Will Special Save Save Save Abilities 1st +0 +0 +0 +2 Aberration Blood, G'Naw Tentacle, Ability boost (Cha +1), +1 level of existing class 2nd +1 +0 +0 +3 G'Naw-Tness Mind, G'Naw Tentacle, Ability boost (Cha +1), +1 level of existing class 3rd +2 +1 +1 +3 Commune with G'Naw-Tness, G'Naw Tentacle, Ability boost (Cha +1), +1 level of existing class 4th +3 +1 +1 +4 Charm Monster, G'Naw Tentacle, Ability boost (Cha +1), +1 level of existing class 5th +3 +1 +1 +4 G'Naw Tentacle, Ability boost (Cha +1), +1 level of existing class, Improved G'Naw Tentacles, Constrict, Improved GrabClass Features All of the following are Class Features of the G'Nawed prestige class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: G'Naweds gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor. Spells per Day/Spells Known: When a new G'Nawed level is gained, the G'Nawed gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if the G'Nawed had also gained a level in a spellcasting class they belonged to before they added the prestige class. They do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. This essentially means that they add the level of G'Nawed to the level of some other spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day, spells known, and caster level accordingly. Aberration Blood (Ex): The G'Nawed gains the feat, Aberration Blood, even they don't meet the prerequisites. If the G'Nawed already has it, they can take another Aberrant Feature, or the feat Deepspawn, even they don't meet the prerequisites. If they can't take Deepspawn or Aberration Blood, they can take any other Aberrant feat. G'Naw Tentacle (Ex): At levels one to four, The G'Nawed gains a tentacle in thier chest. Each tentacle is a natural weapon that can do 1d2 bludgeoning damage. At 2nd level that improves to 1d3, at 3rd that improves to 1d4, and at 4th that improves to 1d6. The tentacles are too thick, slimy and clumsy to use items. Ability Boost (Ex): As a G'Nawed gains levels in this prestige class, his ability scores increase as noted on Table: G'Nawed. G'Naw-Tness Mind (Ex): The G'Nawed gains a small chuck of G'Naw-Tness insanity. They lose 2 Intelligent, but gain immunity to all fear effects. Commune with G'Naw-Tness (Sp): The G'Nawed has a deep magical connection to G'Naw-Tness. The G'Nawed can cast Commune 1/day, but can only aim it at G'Naw-Tness, who will give them the anwser (if he knows the anwser) to any question. They will also be able to ask (without using up the rest of their questions) one question about the answer. Caster level equals CL. Charm Monster (Sp): The G'Nawed can now cast Charm Monster 1/day. Caster level equals CL. Improved G'Naw Tentacles (Ex): All of the G'Nawed tentacles improve in power. They grow small spikes, grow ticker and longer, they begin to drip acid, and are a tad more coordinated. The natural weapons now do 1d6 bludgeoning and slashing damage, plus 1 acid damage, and have a reach of 10 feet. The tentacles can now spend a full round action to squirt out a lot of acid 3/day. All four tentacles twist around each other, and squirt out a 10 feet long (with a 10 feet boost from the tentacles themselves), 5 feet tall, 5 feet wide line of acid that does 5d6 acid damage, with +1d6 per four class levels aside from G'Nawed, Reflex save for half, DC 10+1/2 your HD + your Constitution Modifier. The tentacles still can't use items. Constrict (Ex): A creature grappled by a G'Nawed's tentacles takes automatic tentacle damage each round the hold is maintained. Improved Grab (Ex): If it hits something one size category larger than itself or smaller with a tentacle attack, a G'Nawed can attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking attacks of opportunity. If it gets a hold, it can constrict. G'Naw-Tness Challenge: The details of G'Naw-Tness Challenge should be left up to the DM to decide for his PC. It could be as simple as battling 5 chaos monsters by himself in a pit, too traveling though 20 layers of the Abyss, killing a particular monster on each layer and bring their head back to G'Naw-Tness, too clearing a whole 1000 room dungeon by himself. |

| korcheck10-18-07, 04:25 PM | It seems pretty weak for you have to go through for the class. the tentacles only do tops of 4d4 damage and the acid only does 3d4 1/day this isn't very much especially for the weak range. the charisma boost seem cool until you reach 10th the you basically loose 4 making the boost only 3 numerically. I'd drop the wisdom loss for starters up the damage and/or range on the acid and times per day. plus the tentacle damage as well. what is the point of being able to scry on G'Naw? if this is going to be a class feature the least you should do is give the class spell casting features. just some thoughts to help you on your way. The back story seems good though you may want to reread it for the grammar issues. |
| bkdubs12310-18-07, 05:00 PM | I too see the class as weak and I have to wonder how charismatic someone can really be with four grubby tentacles coming out of their chests... now if this were actually an octopus/squid/kraken PrC then I could see it as cool, but again the tentacles would have to be stronger. The character ought to get some bonus to grappling as they get tentacles, and I think that perhaps the charisma bonus should be toned down. I can stomach a charismatic god of tentacles, but not really a messed up abberant mortal being a great diplomat. Instead of being gifted charisma by G'Naw-Tness flesh out more about the powers G'Naw-Tness actually had/has other than being charismatic and tentacly then give the character something similar to that. |
| Mark_Aged10-18-07, 07:33 PM | First, I'd like to thank you guys for posting at all, as well as giving me some good pointers. I'm not good at balancing stuff. Anyway, how about now? I gave them two spells, a better use of Commune, less score loss at 10th level, Improved Grab, gave a big boost to the acid times per day and damage (I didn't make it clear that it can reach 20 feet. 10 feet for the tentacles, and 10 feet for the acid itself) and tentacle damage. |
| bkdubs12310-18-07, 07:58 PM | Okay, so now I notice 1/2 BAB, with a boost to charisma but no reason to need high charisma and no abilities of the class itself that it helps, and really, really vague requirements. The requirements I'm sort of okay with, but the rest not so much. I'm left wondering... what does this class do? It gets some tentacles that for 9 levels are rather useless, it gets some charisma bonuses that don't particularly help anything (unless you're a sorcerer but then you don't get any caster levels...), and it gets some rather low-level spell like abilities. Think about what you want a character of say... level 13-15 to be able to do at that level with this PrC, then compare that to what other characters of similar level can do. That should be your starting point. |
| Mark_Aged10-19-07, 09:16 AM | I told you, I aimed to make at as weak as I chould, I have to idea how to balance stuff. Anyway, do you think I should add +1 level of existing class at every level and up it's base attack bonus equal to ¾ total Hit Dice? |
| bkdubs12310-19-07, 02:45 PM | Well, since this is so campaign specific, I can't tell you what you should do with this. If you want to keep the charisma bonuses it makes sense that you should add +1 level to existing spellcasting class at each level. If you get rid of the charisma bonuses then there's a whole host of things you can do. This class really feels like it wants to be a 5 level prestige class. In 5 levels you can give all sorts of goodies away and still have really vague requirements. If it were 5 levels I'd say give it 3/4 BAB, +1 to spellcasting class every level, +1 to charisma score every level, 1 tentacle each level except 5th. At every level the tentacles improve in strength, and at 5th you get to do a couple cool things with the tentacles (acid and constrict, and maybe think of one more. treat it like a tentacle tactical feat :D). At 1st level they get the Aberration feat, at 2nd they lose 2 points of intelligence, at 3rd level they can cast Commune with G'Naw-Tness only 1/day, at 4th level they can cast Charm Monster 1/day. Start the tentacles off at 1d2. At 2nd level that improves to 1d3, at 3rd that improves to 1d4, and at 4th that improves to 1d6. At 5th give them the ability to grab onto things (prehensile strength), and the improved grab ability, along with the acid spray. Make the acid spray deal say... 5d6 damage, but with +1d6 per four class levels aside from G'Nawed, and make the save 10+1/2 your HD + your constitution modifier. Does all of that sound reasonable to you? |
| Mark_Aged10-19-07, 08:04 PM | That sounds really good, I'd like to do that, but is a such thing as Prestige Classes that only have 5 levels? |
| bkdubs12310-20-07, 03:01 AM | Of course! There are many! There are even weird ones like 13 level prestige classes and 3 level prestige classes! You could totally do that! |
| Mark_Aged10-20-07, 09:26 AM | Okay, I did it! What do you think? |
| bkdubs12310-20-07, 09:50 AM | Okay, now it seems like a very focused, very rewarding PrC that offers compelling abilities to a variety of characters. Allow me to make one final suggestion. Perhaps it would be wise to knock off that "+1 level of existing spellcaster class" at 1st level. The class does offer quite a bit and so making a spellcaster really commit is probably a good idea, but wait until you get some more feedback to really change it. |
| bkdubs12310-22-07, 03:26 AM | BUMP? |
| Mark_Aged10-22-07, 10:19 PM | Did anyone notice the forums being down for a really long time? Anyway, yeah, I should remove the caster level at level 1, but I'll wait to se if I get anymore income of thought on it. And do you think I should add any weapon or armor proficiency? Not anything to big, seeing as casters don't have a lot of proficiency, and that'd be to big a hook not to bite. And do you have any thoughts on what the challenge should, could, or might be if you used it in a campaign? |

| bkdubs12310-31-07, 11:06 AM | You should change the title of the class. I just randomly looked at it, and decided to comment, but the title kept me from looking at it for a while too. As far as weapon proficiency, I wouldn't, I would however add that the tentacles can be used as natural attacks. On the subject of the challenge used to qualify for the PrC itself, I am drawing a blank. I kinda think it should be something crazy random (depending on DM and character level). |
| Mark_Aged10-31-07, 04:25 PM | Well, the name is an evil name from an insane god, I thought it was good. What do you think it should be called? And yeah, I never really made a point that they were natural weapons, I'll add that. |
| bkdubs12310-31-07, 04:33 PM | No, no, I actually like the name for the class, I meant the name for the thread itself. Yeah the whole thing about them being natural weapons definitely needs added though, in order for them to interact with feats and rules properly. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions about what to title the thread, but its just something to think about. |
| Mark_Aged11-02-07, 09:12 AM | Bump. |
| bkdubs12311-02-07, 01:50 PM | Maybe change the title of the thread to The G'Nawed (or The Grasping Tentacles of a Mad God). I dunno. Something eye catching and interesting sounding. G'Nawed is kinda like, "Uh... wtf?" |
| Mark_Aged11-02-07, 01:58 PM | Okay, I just always have it when I make something new, I make it say "New (whatever it is): (Name of thing)". |

| bkdubs12311-04-07, 08:05 PM | Please change the title of the thread... No one's going to look at a class named G'Nawed. I only looked at it because I was bored and intrigued. Of course I liked it after I looked, but that's beside the point. |
| Mark_Aged11-04-07, 10:13 PM | Okay, I changed it, does it look eye-catching now? |

| dman1123511-09-07, 04:19 AM | Well, this is certainly an interesting PrC. You know what I'd do? Give it a spell casting minimum, possibly cleric only, and drop the first level of spell casting. It definately needs a prereq that sets a level of entry. Right now you can enter at level 2 if you complete the challenge, and fluff is not a good prereq. |

What are talking about when you say "spell casting minimum"? I was thinking it'd be good to let anyone of any level take the class if they complete the challenge. Is that not good? |
| bkdubs12311-09-07, 01:21 PM | I don't neccessarily think its completely bad, but you definitely have to flesh out the challenge more. If you don't make it a fixed thing at least give clear guidelines to DMs who aren't exactly sure what they should do with it. Guidelines should include how to build a challenge for entrants of all levels (although it should start to easier to enter after level 5 or so), some specific themes inherent to all challenges, etc, etc... |
