Although I'm not playing a Nar Demonbinder, I DM at the moment, and one crucial NPC is a Conjurer5/Red Wizard2/Nar Demonbinder2 (not an optimal build, though, you can do better). He'll eventually gain more levels in ND, but for the moment he's quite the nemesis for my PCs. They've met him thrice, once defeating him (narrowly, and by using a McGuffin), once being outsmarted, and once refraining from actual combat.

The ND is a perfect NPC in a way, because he needs much downtime to do all the calling of extraplanars. On the other hand, this gives me the chance to introduce lots of rarely-seen outsiders and elementals in my campaign. Last time the PCs met him, he was accompanied by a few Azer bodyguards and rode a Nightmare. Makes for a lively image, and provides the ND with much needed melee assistance/fodder/mobility. The Fiendish familiar (a Quasit) has really given the PCs trouble, being the perfect spy (turn into bat, turn invisible, works like a Protoss Probe... with poisoned claws if it needs them).

The ND seems very limited to most people, without gaining much in return. However, what he gains is flavor and focus. The (very short) spell list actually provides all you need on top of your extraplanar minions. It's a bit like a Sorcerer with all spells picked for you according to a theme, plus you actually get class abilities.

Apart from that, use your calling diagrams to call stuff to your heart's content. Remember that the ND is 3E, not 3.5, but the stuff you can call is still obnoxiously powerful once you get access to Planar Binding (not Lesser). Plan for lots of downtime. Secure the assets to make opposed Cha checks easier (Eagle's Splendor, Guidance, Bestow Curse, Bane, Doom, Enervation,... the list goes on). Craft several of your special calling signs.

Remember ND is a 7 level PrC. I'd really like to see an extension to 10th level (9th level spells: Gate+Imprisonment, Adamantium Signs, perhaps a fiendish Cohort?).

That said, I can't make my mind up if its good or bad. I've never played it myself, but some of the abilities are interesting.

12-12-07, 01:41 PM I have played a fiend binder before and still do. My character is a decendent of House Dlardrageth from Forgotten Realms. His lineage was one that didn't interbreed with demons and became good aligned but still he had the family's nack for dealing with demons and has used this power for good. A certain poetic justice. Anyway, the prestige class isn't altogether overpowering, it is a lot easier to take Leadership to gain a loyal cohort. For storyline purposes and the coolness factor of telling your pet demon to "destroy" the enemy...priceless.
