I've been working (for a while now  ) on trying to put together a somewhat balanced ftr/mage PrC. I was hoping i could get some input on balance (skipping flavor for now). any input would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are thinking of wiz and fighter, I will use them to qualify for this PrC. You need at least wiz 5 to cast that spell which has +2 BAB. So, you need ftr 4 to reach the total +6 BAB. So the minimum entry level for the PrC would be 10th clvl. This is significantly higher than that of Eldritch Knight. As the way I see it, the harder to get into a PrC, the more benefit it should grant.

Arcane channeling (Su): Starting at 3rd level, gains the ability to deliver touch spells by means of a melee attack (channeling spells through his weapon).

I am suddenly brain dead and can't remember where this ability originally comes from. PH2 or CAdv?

Combat casting (Su): At 7th level you gain combat casting as a bonus feat.
Quick cast (Su): At 9th level you can quicken one spell per day.

As for the rest of your ability. Since your entry level is 4 lvls higher than EK, your abilities would seem somewhat weak for a high-lvl entry PrC. Personally, I wouldn't mind giving good fort save and full spell progression (all 10) plus Armored Mage (medium) at all. As for Combat Casting feat, that'd be clvl 16. It's probably quite late for a sensible player to have already pick up that feat by now and might as well be omitted. Quick Cast isn't that useful either really since you'd be clvl 19 by then. Getting the Quicken Spell feat would have worked much better. So, those 2 abilities I suggest you drop or move them to earlier levels.

Here are three fighter/mage PrC that are already printed and good to go.

Eldritch Knight (DMG) - the original with full BAB and 9/10 casting
Spellsword (CWar) - full BAB, 5/10 casting, reduces ASF
Abjurant Champion (CMage) - full BAB, 5/5 casting, stiff prereqs.
There are numberous other classes that also work to some degree but just these three should suffice.

Duskblade, PH2.

Duskblade. Or how to have your cake and eat it too.

Best. Class. Ever.

You want a good Fighter/Mage? Look no further. Unless you are improving on what the Duskblade has already done (they did it best, in my opinion), why bother?

That being said, if you build a prestigue class that is almost a specialist Duskblade, that could be very interesting. There are prestige classes that almost function as natural progressions of certain base classes. Foculan Lyrist is almost exclusive to a multiclassed Druid/Bard. Almost. This could be no different.

I know, I know. I'm not much help. :P

i didn't want to go with the duskblade, etc, etc...

however, what i really was going for was an Eldritch Knight that loses his 1st level feat and gains arcane channeling. I think Alternative Class features would have been the way to go (Loses: 1st level feat, Gains: arcane channeling, Special: able to cast vampire touch - and left it at that) but I've been told that ACFs aren't used in prestige classes (though, i believe it is in Heroes of Battle - Legendary Leader).

thoughts on that??? doable? fair?
