Good PrC for a Nymph??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

What's a good PrC for a Nymph(I suppose it could be a base class as well...)? With the skills she can pretty easily qualify for just about any general PrC, she has some baseline casting abilities so she can meet most "Ability to cast X level spells/divine spells", any ideas? I haven't had a chance to look around to much so I'm just looking for some suggestions at this point and time.

(Oh and just about ANY published book works with the exception of Unearthed Arcana which I don't see being a problem)

Ask to have your Nymph Druid spellcasting stack with the normal Druid's and take the Fey Blood feat from here (http://www.giantitp.com/articles/3CsX278ZDGQQ62al3RP.html). Consider some Druid prestige classes that can give decent benefits with only 7 levels.

Be warned, with a paltry 3 BAB at level 13 and a combined RHD/LA of 13, they generally suck at everything under the sun.

Even with the above (6 RHD, 7 LA, 7 Druid), the best you'll get by level 20 is casting at a 14th level with 7th level Druid class features.

Unless your DM is doing something to drop that LA by a lot, consider a different character.

You won't ever be very good at it, but the arcane hierophant (w. sorcerer or beguiler casting) can be quite thematic.

They have 2 good gaze attacks worth spamming every chance you get.:) That alone makes the LA well worth it, though the blinding beauty can be a bit hard to aim properly.

Druidic spellcasting is not bad when it comes to battlefield control, even with retarded progression. You can still assume the role of support spellcaster.

Easiest way would simply to take more lvs of druid. Shadow weave adept could be nice if you are willing to work towards the prereqs. Divine disciple gives it some nice flavour.

I wouldn't worry about the bab. If you play your cards right, you shouldn't be attacking much, if at all.:)

It might be hilarious becoming a Heartwarden (Faiths and Pantheons, specialist Sunite priest/ess). Here comes the Charisma machine :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm actually not playing a Nymph but my Cougar got killed and re-incarnated as a Nymph(since it was an animal the DM used the old 3.0 listing).

So now I have an "Animal Companion" that most me would kill for...and I'm under a nearly permenant charm effect from some undead yet pregnant sorceress....

Anyway if there are any under suggestions I'd love to hear them, and I'm well aware a starting ECL of 13 can be killer, I'm just looking for a way to compensate.

Based on the stats and downside I was thinking a new levels of Ninja might work for some crazt sneaking through the woods kick your ass kind of flavor, the Wisdom will help with AC and since she isn't proficient with any Armor it really helps.

I'm still trying to focus on an arcane sneak though so I'm not sure what I'm gonna do....may I'll try my hand at making an "Arcane Sneak"....

(If I weren't a warlock I'd totally go that way...)

That's kinda... I mean, a nymph ninja is about as weird as a nymph swordsage. How about a prestige ranger (UA) level or two? As a fey she should have enough skill points anyway, and if you give her 1 or 2 more levels of druid she can get a decent animal companion. Also, the insane charisma might call for a few wilder levels (4, perhaps) and then going for the psi-divinist mix :D .

You will love her. Or else.

Well I'm already the only player in the group with a truly psionic character so I'd rather avoid that category if I can(though I was kinda thinking Wilder).

As for a Nymph Swordsage....I'm also the only player with a ToB character so I'd rather avoid that books as well(I like being diverse).

What I'm really trying to do is stick with the "All Naturale" thing (or "Natural" but I think you get the general idea).

Is there a Druid variant that prizes Spells over Wild Shape? If I could find a class that uses nature based magic (preferably still of the divine nature) I'd be set, I'm not crazy about my litte Nymph wild shaping into a Boar or having to track another "character"(companion in this place, besides my "animal companion" having it's own animal companion is a tad...strange....)

The group already has a Druid/Wu Jen and I'm not crazy about the Shugenja class so I'm running out of idea....maybe I'll just go Ranger and see if I can find a variant to drop the companion...

Well, you can always go for a druidic PrC that gives spells and not wildshape... Divine Disciple could work, especially if you get the DM to give you the domain spells OVER your normal slots, like clerics get them :) I guess it's just a matter of picking one divine PrC that doesn't give you wildshape... There are a few of those ;) A bard/druid PrC could also be great; I'm not sure how many of them bumped your spellcasting level regardless of whether it's arcane or divine.

Good base class, battle dancer. Adding your charisma to your AC again mean never having to say low HP. Plus the class can do quite a bit of damage in combat without weapons, so you won't have to provide your 'animal' companion with any equipment. Then just conivnce the Gm to let the nymph take the duelist class, and maybe ninja. Also you could try getting the saint template added to this beast. Having an AC of 130 isn't a dream, it's a target!

AC isn't everthing. There are still tons of ways of killing which bypass AC altogether...;)

Plus, I am not interested in being a glorified doorstop. True, nothing can hit me with that obscene AC, but I doubt I can contribute meaningfully to combat either. The enemy can safely disregard me and focus solely on the other PCs, knowing that I cannot hit for nuts. Though I suppose I could just hang back and spam stunning gaze with impunity...:)

Don't have the book with me at the moment, but is there any way you can get that new dancer PrC from Complete Scoundrel? That just bleeds flavor.

In a third party book called Traps and Treachery theres a PrC called Discreet Campanion. It has some very interesting abilities to go alone with a nymph. It is 3.0 so it might have to be upgraded.

I was lookin at the Contemplative class as a possiblity, while it doesn't really fit the flavor it does keep the divine spell progression and with the right bonus domains I can build on the initial flavor.

So far the following classes initially look/sound interesting:
Contemplative
Heartwarden
Ninja
Wilder
Battle Dancer

I'll need to check Com Scoun for the mentioned class and I'll look into finding a copy of Traps and Treachery.

Feel free to comment on the current list of suggest new one's, after digging around it looks like it may be harder to stick with the whole nature thing so I may just need to stick to the Divine side of things, that and the deity she's under supposeedly has a class in the EF book and something else in Arcanis that I may need to look into.

There's gotta be a fallacy for this somewhere. When did having a high AC suddenly guarantee sacrificing offensive power?

Battle Dancer isn't a good choice depending on your beliefs. If you believe that no single stat should be able to be applied to something multiple times (Charisma to AC twice) then it won't work since the Nymph already does that.

If you want her to be an archer, consider this (http://boards1.wizards.com/leaving.php?destination=http://www.wizards.com/default.asp%3Fx%3Ddnd/fey/20030815a) WotC supplement article's Charming the Arrow feat.

Go for Planar Shepard (here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=709233)'s the handbook). It's from Magic of Eberron, and from what I've seen it's stupidly powerful. But it might even out if the LA is too much.

Unfortuantely it's an FR campaign and the DM doesn't like anything from the Ebberon setting.

A nymph is already ECL13. Slapping on the saint template means you don't have much room for this battle dancer prc.

I agree that high AC does not necessarily have to come at expense of offensive power. I don't think what I have said is a fallacy since my comments were directed at this single scenario alone, not as a blanket statement. For purposes of this discussion, where it was being suggested that the nymph essentially take 1-2 lv dips in myriad of classes/prcs, then it is sure that whatever benefits said prc offers is bound to be diluted and her offensive power weakened.

Tell me - what the heck can a nymph with saint template, 2 lvs in battle dancer etc hope to achieve other than spam her gaze attacks?:confused:Let's take it 1 step further. Give her swordsage or monk's belt for wis mod to ac. Nothing can hit her. So what?

I don't disagree with the above in the slightest.

I just didn't like your phrasing/reasoning in the other post; it seemed focus less on the rationale of an ineffective build and more on some imaginary dichotomy. ;)

good lord dude! and seriously, the Bellflower Tattoo (add cha mod to another stat!) makes this really fun, and the Scorpion, Spider (esp with the bellflower), Tiger, Crysanthimum and Wasp tattoes can make for awesome suppliments to the nymph's own abilities.

i'm also a firm beliver in anything that has to make the Nymph a monk-type. +6 to Dex and Wis, and +8 to cha (for the above prc stuff) make them natural monks.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm actually not playing a Nymph but my Cougar got killed and re-incarnated as a Nymph(since it was an animal the DM used the old 3.0 listing).

Normally it would be reincarnated as an animal of a similar type.

So now I have an "Animal Companion" that most me would kill for...and I'm under a nearly permenant charm effect from some undead yet pregnant sorceress....

If your animal companion no longer has animal intelligence (reincarnate doesn't change INT/WIS/CHA, so it should be 2/11/6 or so) for some weird reason then it will no longer be your companion, at least not under the normal sense of an animal companion. The fact that you're thinking about giving it class levels instead of following normal animal companion progression should tip you off this isn't an animal companion any longer.
WinterPsionic

02-23-07, 06:14 PM
Believe me this confused the hell out of me to, first my Cougar died, I wanted to use Raise Dead and bring her back but we had a spare scroll of Reincarnate(which the party wanted me to use), then we got in an arguement over what to do with MY animal companion and we ended up using some of 2.5 or 3.0 artifact to speak with the Godess of Cats(Can't remember her name but she also the Godess of Fertility I think...FR campaign) and a Fey'ri Duskblade in the party swore to become her follower if the godess would tell us what we should do with the cat because when I asked what the cat wanted to do(I asked it's spirit after finding it in the beastlands) it said to ask it's godess. The godess said a reincranation was fine as long as the Fey'ri kept her promise, so I end up using the scroll, I let the DM roll for the outcome, it comes out as something on the table related to Fey and since I'm a Warlock with the Fey Heritage feats it kinda matched and I ended up with a Nymph that is your typical 3.5 RAW nymph. I asked if I should consider her a cohort as if my Wild Cohort had translated to Leadership but the DM said she's still an Animal Companion which leaves me, the lvl 14 Warlock, with an ECL 13 "Animal Companion" who won't get any bonuses till I gain like another 4 levels...I'm totally confused but if that's the way he want's to do it I won't argue, he made the comment once I'm high enough for her to take bonuses she'd be able to take class levels so all I know is sooner or later (if this character doesn't kill me) she'll get to take a few class levels and I'd like to have them planned out ahead of time if possible...assuming she doesn't die and get reincarnated again as some kind of animal....

Well, I asside from the fact that I think your DM is making a mistake by letting you have Nypmh as an animal companion.

I'm surprise that no one has mentioned taking at least two levels in Holy Liberator for Divine Grace (add charisma bonus to all saving throws).

Maybe the DM has a sadistic streak. Unlike a cougar, Nymphs have equipment slots. Next time they hit town... shopping spree! 5 pairs of boots, 2 cloaks to go with each, matching earrings... rings...

1) Holy Liberator for Divine Grace; I do agree there.

2) Remember to take "Practiced Spellcaster" to boost your druid caster level by 4. I really do love this feat. It makes multiclassing and half-caster or non-full casters so much more playable.

3) "Force Of Personality" feat is one of those stats-swap for saves feat, and I believe it lets you use CHA instead of WIS for will saves.

4) Arcane Duelist. You'll have to do some digging to find the WotC PrC online, but it gets CHA to AC just like the Duelist gets INT to AC. I think too it may not have a level-related cap to that AC bonus, but maybe it was errataed.

5) Leadership. This requires you and the DM to really want this, so don't take it lightly. Actually, you said it was an animal companion. Maybe you could somehow have animal followers rather than human followers, this Nymph Druid with a pack of wolves and a few bears around here. "Chain Nature's Favour", "Chain Magic Fang", "Chain Bull's Strength".

Nymph's already get CHA to AC and Saves so I'll need to see if the DM will allow it twice

Only thing is she still only has 6HD and if memory serves PS doesn't let you exceed your HD, if I take levels in a non-spellcsting class then sure I'd take it but as stands I'm not sure it's good for only 1/2 it's possible effect

3) "Force Of Personality" feat is one of those stats-swap for saves feat, and I believe it lets you use CHA instead of WIS for will saves.

Not a big enough gap between her Cha and Wis mod atm to make it worth while, I did look into it though and I appreciate the suggestion!

Ok 2 big things:

1. The Arcane Duelist, while I like the flavor and truthfully it almost let's me do what I wanted to do the whole "Arcane" thing is kind of a drag, maybe I'll try to split off for a "Divine Duelist"...(Healing Sting Rapier here I come)

2. The Tatooed Monk, alignment makes it pretty hard to qualify for and my DM's pretty big on flavor(as am I) so trying to say I have a Lawful Nymph is kinda pushing it, any chance there's a Tatooed Barbarian...(Hormonal Inked Nymph just reeks of this groups kind of flavor...)

Also what is "Divine Grace"? Tried to Goggle it and came up with a lot of religious...stuff...

I'm not sure the DM will go for CHA x2 to saves but ya never know...

As for the Fochlucan Lyrist, while I don't mind the level dip in Druid I'd like to avoid investing in too many base classes, since Nymphs don't have the druidic language that would mean 1 level there, and then at least 1 level on Bard for the Music ability and the arcane spells.

It's a Paladin ability (here (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/paladin.html)). Also, when you used Google did you use the Advanced search and put in boards1.wizards.com into Domain? That would limit your search to just the forums.

Hey, I've been checking my older books... What about the Mystic Wanderer from Magic of Faerun? It's for divine casters, and has something very nice for those who have high charisma and are not wearing armor :D - which, nicely enough, stacks with the nymph's own bonus (I'm not sure if DG would stack, btw). Plus, it could fit an adventuring nymph imo.
