Good prestige class for an illusionist... [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-24-07, 12:45 PM Ok, so I have an illusionist, hes no where close to getting to 2nd level right now...but, I figured I'd start looking for a prestige class to work for...
So, are there any good prestige classes to take?
Hes a bit of a diplomat (Doesn't favor fighting, has ranks in diplomacy), nervous/shy, I plan on having him favor Shadow illusions...Currently lvl 1, not very good stats.

Any suggestions for a prestige class that he can take?

(PS, this is an Eberon campaign...)

07-24-07, 12:59 PM If he's a gnome, Shadowcraft Mage (Races of Stone) rocks. If he's not a gnome, it still rocks, but you need to point your DM to the adaptation column and hope s/he's in a good mood. Aside from that, I can think of Shadowcrafter (Underdark), Shadow Adept (Player's Guide to Faerun, non-good, Shadow Weave), maybe even a bit of virtuoso if you multiclass him or can get the required ranks. CMage has a bit more on the issue. If he's a wizard, the Master Specialist PrC is a good way to get some decent abilities fast. The nightmare spinner can give his illusions a real kick, and even the Wild Soul in CMage gives a bonus to illusions, too.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll try a Nighmare Spinner, time to go out and by a Complete Mage book...

07-25-07, 12:10 PM Crunch-wise, Nightmare Spinner is a pretty weak class. Master Specialist (same book) has awesome abilities for Illussionists though, and can be accessed sooner than any other prestige class.

07-26-07, 11:25 AM If your DM doesn't mind homebrews, I have an illusionist PrC I made up a while ago and just re-posted. It's called, quite simply, The Illusion (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=13198097#post13198097). It doesn't have the bonus spells or increased caster level of the Master Specialist, but I think it has some unique special abilities that make it rather fun.

07-28-07, 07:43 PM The only reason I don't suggest the Master Specialist... is that it is a no-brainer, which in my opinion is the hallmark of poor class balance. There's almost no reason to NOT take it, the requirements are weak (and you probably wanted them in the first place), and there's no drawback to speak of.

Other than that, Shadowcraft Mage is probably the best. I'm currently playing one, and the results are... umm... let's just say that I'm VERY glad I've been playing him as a cocky manipulator (as in, he doesn't so much manipulate people as set the stage and let them find their way through it), since I've found myself having to basically delay my turn roughly a third of the time. If I didn't delay, well, the battles would be over too quickly and the others wouldn't have a chance to shine.
