Dragon Essence: Each level of Half-dragon Ascendant you gain is treated as a racial hit die. This increases your HD based abilities accordingly. Also, after every five levels you must return to the dragon relative you qualified for this class with for a number of consecutive days equal to your class level. Until this is completed, no more levels in Half-dragon Ascendant may be gained.

Draconic Familiar: You loose your familiar, with the associated penalties. You choose a new familiar, and it has the draconic template. You are treated as a character of half of your Half-dragon Ascendant level in addition to any other sources of familiar advancement for the purposes of your familiar.

Frightful interaction: Add one half your class level to intimidate checks, but subtract your class level from diplomacy and gather information checks. You can scare people into doing what you want, but you have a harder time relating to them.

Scaled Armor: When you reach second level, your skin starts growing heavy scales over the course of the next eight hours, but then the scales separate from your body, creating a suit of perfectly form-fitting armor (that you are proficient with). The armor provides a +4 armor bonus that increases by +2 every even level afterward, has no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, and is considered light armor. The removal of this armor is much more like sloughing it off, however donning it again takes another full eight hours of rest to regrow it. During that time it provides only ½ its normal bonus, grants a 50% arcane spell failure chance and a -5 armor check penalty. It cannot be enchanted.

Draconic form: Once a day for every 3 levels (starting at 3rd), the Half-dragon Ascendant can take the form of a dragon of your type. The form's HD can be no higher than your ECL+5. You gain the size, subtype, speed, AC, attacks, space/reach, special attacks, special qualities, Str, Dex, and Con of the form. You do not gain any spell casting from the change, and you only have a moderate (3/4) BAB progression while in dragon form. This lasts for 1 round/level + your Cha bonus. In addition to taking the form of your dragon heritage, you also can take the form of your non-dragon parent as a free action any number of times per day. You appear-for all intents and purposes-a creature of your non-dragon heritage, though demonstrating superhuman feats of strength or using your breath weapon may dissuade people from believing your disguise.

Damage Reduction: You gain damage reduction equal to the damage reduction of the dragon form you take.

Blindsense: You gain blindsense out to 20'. This improves by another 20' every 5 levels.

Frightful Presence: You gain the frightful presence of the dragon form you take. The save is figured the same as a dragon.

Spell Resistance: You gain spell resistance equal to the spell resistance of the dragon form you take.

Improved Breath Weapon: Your breath weapon now deals damage one die larger (6d8 to 6d10) and the save increases by 2. This only affects your natural form (and half-dragon form if applicable).

Attack Form Specialization: If you have wings, a tail, or a breath weapon usable in rounds- you gain an additional ability based off of which ability(s) you have: Tail sweep, wing slam, or Ally-friendly breath. Your tail sweep affects a half circle around you, out to 5 feet every 5 levels. Wing slam grants you 2 bludgeoning attacks for 1d4+1/2 Str. Ally-friendly breath allows you to use your breath weapon without the fear toasting your allies. Your breath weapon now only affects targets who you want it to in it's area i.e., allies in the area take no damage. Your breath weapon also affects +10 feet (if a cone) or +20 (if a line). You also gain shape breath as the feat. All of these abilities are only effective in your natural form (and half-dragon form if applicable).

Improved Natural Weapons: All your natural weapons are treated as one size category larger. This ability is only effective in your natural form (and half-dragon form if applicable). This does not grant you any extra attack forms.

Draconic Ascension: Once you reach 15th level, the draconic form you take becomes your "true form" though you still can only take this form the pre-defined number of times per day (note-the Half-Dragon form is also your true form, so you can't force yourself into your "true form" with magic, etc.). This means you can start taking feats, prestige classes, etc. that your new true form meets the requirements for. You may also no longer take any form or appearance other than that of a creature with the type of dragon or dragon-blooded subtype.

Balance is my main concern, followed by flavor and logic. If you have any questions about any of the abilities, feel free to ask.

Format it into tables, then it can be read earlier. type
before table, and
after table(leave out the spaces after the word)

Also, dragons are covered under knowledge arcana

not sure what you mean about tables....and I know about the knowledge thing, I did that on purpose, It needed to be added for both flavor and for restriction purposes.

If you make the table in wordpad and then put it between {code} {/code} and use [ instead of { ...it maintains the spaces instead of pulling them out. It looks better.

Is this for a PC? It looks as if it heads into epic territory. Even with 7th level (10 ranks in a class skill)... and 15 levels in the PrC (which is rather odd) the last 2 levels would be epic.

As for balance... somebody else should handle that one. I'm not great at measuring... but you do have average, if odd saves, a full base attack, 2/3rds casting and a d12 for a hit die on a 15 level PrC... I'm leaning no.

And Knowledge (Dragon) is still a bit... well, it doesn't work well. Consider replacing it with Knowledge (history) since many dragons are long lived... and... Oh, I don't know... maybe, Language: Draconic?

ok, I'll see what I can do with the layout.
it does head into epic levels, up to 25 (you forgot to add the +3 ecl for th half dragon template)
I'll look at skills, and see what I can come up with, maybe knowledge nature at a lower rank? (physiology)

I guess my biggest concern is the shifting ability, it's supposed to be more like a rage in a sense, temporarily casting off all of your non-dragon heritage, but I've gotten feedback in other places that says it is overpowered. thoughts?

ok, I've been looking at the dragon magic book, and now I'm dubious about the scaled armor ability...I know mine takes a long time to get, but it is quite a bit better....and I'm still up in the air about the shifting ability.

... Whoa.

You know, just breaking into dragon abilities, though ever popular, is always quite a challenge. This class reads like a dragon fanboy's dream.

At level 25 (we're supposing) the Half-dragon Ascendant is the proud owner of a nigh constant 26 or easily higher AC (assuming he never takes his armor off) that never gets in the way of his around 12 level equivalent of casting. He can turn into a (let's say) very old Copper Dragon 5 times a day for at least 20 rounds, but even after he's burned through those he still can access most of the abilities that make his parent what they are.

Would this guy actually group with anyone, or just fly around toasting 5 towns a day? And I swear, I mean no offense by this post, I'm really just trying to figure out where you're coming from with it.
MageSparrowhawk

06-25-07, 11:05 AM
I understand, and I take no offense
(and btw, it kindof -is- the dream you speak of)
the thing I'm seeing for balance is that at level 25, all of those things are good, but not really awesome...I mean casting as a 14th (10 improvements to a 4th level soc) kind of sucks at 25, doesn't it? and armor class of 26 (or higher, I know) also isn't very good at that level...
I guess my biggest wonder is whether or not the epic group I know is just really broken...maybe that's why, I just have overpowered expectations...
oh, before I forget, what would you suggest to change (or weaken, as the case may be) about it?
Traverse

06-25-07, 01:47 PM
Well, first let's get a couple of the base mechanics out of the way. teshen made some good points. The d12 does seem a tinge high as a hit die. Consider lowering it, even just to d10.

Try staying away from non-standard save progressions. At most a character with this style should have 2 good saves, maybe Fort and Will, with Reflex being the 'bad' save.

And you should consider replacing Knowledge (Dragons) with Knowledge (History). DnD rules are meant to stay simple, and making a character spend 10 extra skill points on a skill that he's already covering with Knowledge (Arcana) feels redundant.

As far as power issues go, there is one easy way of going about this. Maybe you could think about changing this from one 15 level prestige class into two 10 level prestige classes, the second one being available once the character goes epic. That way you could restrict the abilities you think are epically powerful to the second half of the class, and perhaps the progression of this whole shindig might feel a bit more sane. :)

New/Changed Class Abilities
Dragon Form: Once a day for every 4 levels of the class (starting at 2nd), you can take the form of a dragon of your type. The form's HD (and therefor age) is equal to your Ascendant level + 3.

Upon changing, you regain lost hit points as if you had rested for a night (though this healing does not restore temporary ability damage and provide other benefits of resting; and changing back does not heal the subject further). If slain, you revert to your original form, though you remain dead. You gain the Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores of your chosen dragon but retain your own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also gain all extraordinary special attacks possessed by the dragon as well as extraordinary special qualities, supernatural and spell-like abilities, but keep your own caster level, known spells, and BAB.

Spell Resistance: While in your natural form you gain spell resistance equal to your Ascendant level.

Natural Armor: The ascendants natural armor provided by the half-dragon template improves by 1 at level 3, and again at levels 6 and 9.

Damage Reduction: While in your natural form you gain DR 5/magic.

True Dragon Form: At 8th level you attain your true draconic form. You gain the type and subtypes of your chosen dragon, and your initial HD are equal to your current Ascendant level + 3. Unlike in previous levels, your humanoid HD does not carry over into dragon form, though your caster level and known spells still do. You begin to age as a dragon, your starting age being the youngest a dragon of your HD age bracket can be, gaining your new abilities as you move into the new age brackets.

Alternate Form: The half-dragon ascendant can assume it's original humanoid form as a standard action five times per day. The dragon can remain in its original humanoid form until it chooses return to its natural form. You can only gain experience and levels while in your humanoid form. This ability replaces the dragon's Alternate Form ability if it has it.

Now, you don't have to use any of this, it's just suggestions. I dropped the BAB from best to just good, to represent the fact that this character is still a sorcerer under his scaly exterior. I also dropped the amount of spell levels earned to represent how many caster levels an adult dragon would have, which is roughly what the ascendant will be by the end of the class. And I've taken the armor out, instead improving his natural armor. It should be up to the character to awe such an awe inspiring suit of armor, it shouldn't be given to him. That dragon form bit was hard to get past, but I think that becoming an Adult or Mature Adult dragon by the end of the class is more than enough to be working towards. And even my version seems very powerful.
MageSparrowhawk

06-26-07, 02:13 PM
ok, I see where you're going with this now....some questions then a few points.
are you keeping the requirements the same?
do you really mean to give them the healing and spell-like abilities while shifting?
The saves were designed so they were all "good", like dragons have but not too good. The attack bonus is the same, dragons naturally get a full BAB based on their HD, but I wanted to make the dragon form a little less powerful, therefore the moderate BAB replacement. The d12 hit die was also because draons have that. When draconic form is first gained, they can become a dragon with 5 HD, I think some wyrmlings start with more than that much, therefore someone with gold dragon heritage couldn't even use it untll 5th level (and becoming a wyrmling isn't very good at all at 12th(or 15th)). The spell resistance should be at least 10+level, or else it would be the worst SR in the game (and even then it's not very good). Shouldn't the natural armor increases continue into epic levels?, plus, the natural armor boost of +3 at 19th really isn't good, I mean, it doesn't even double the original bonus. DR 5/magic sucks; that's all the more there is to it, especially at 17th level...I mean the barbarian gets a total of DR 4/- by that point which is at least non-avoidable, but at that level most everything you fight is either going to have DR so they can bypass it, or a magic weapon. The spellcasting is also really poor, do you mean to make it so that by 20, it can only cast as an 8th level sorcerer? One final thing, I don't want to make this a transformational class, that has been one of my goals from the outset.
I think overall your changes ar understandable, though they're just too weak for the level at which they're gained. (remember you're going to start taking this at ECL 11)
Traverse

06-27-07, 01:27 PM
All valid points. I'm just trying to think like a dragon, eh? :) It takes them a couple hundred years to get to where this guy's headed in 20 levels.

The requirements are completely up to you. I've never been good with reqs., and I won't pretend to know when you want your caster to to enter the prestige class.

I did mean for them gain the supernatural abilities, all except for spell levels and options, which would not change. It's like polymorph meets shapechange. So no healing powers would be gained, at least not when using core dragons, since none of them have any healing spell-like abilities. I hadn't noticed the minimum HD level for the dragon form, sorry about that. It's a difficult power, a few extra HD points later on in levels would mean a big gain in power, but perhaps that's what's needed. Your call.

Feel free to add another gain of DR 5/magic later on, but just look at the dragons. Dr 15/magic isn't gained for all core dragons until the Very Old HD bracket. Same growth with spell resistance, and it's not like one out of every two classes gives any SR. The natural armor, well, your prestige class already outperforms others like Dragon Disciple by leaps and bounds, so.

I still recommend the lower Reflex stat. I know it's not easily reflected in a dragon's save, so just look to the Dex stat. 10's across the board, from Wyrmling to Great Wyrm. Having a lower Reflex growth would be perfectly representable in my eyes.
MageSparrowhawk

06-27-07, 08:47 PM
starting at the bottom, I can see the reflex save thing...
I see what you're saying about the DR...I don't want it o be useless, and I'm afraid a DR 5/magic would be...
the spell resistance-I just mean that -all- SR is 10+something, you just didn't add it in
I also know what you mean with the natural armor, maybe what should be done is something like what I have, with the scale armor, but reduce the bonus by a significant ammount so it's still a decision on what armor to use
the healing I meant from the change itself, not spells...
I have one more Idea, that is, keep the "level" of dragon being transformed into the same, but reduce the time able to be transformed. That way the dragon form would be able to be as strong as it needs to be, just not for an extended period of time. Something like 1 round/ 1/4 level +Cha bonus.

One thing I think should be done is that the abilities from 2nd level on should be based off of the dragon form, not the half dragon form...like SR, DR, frightful presense, etc.
also, I'd like to bring up the BAB again, I still think it should be full in humanoid form, and BAB (granted by this class) moderate while in dragon form.

But that's just it... changes in form don't change saves, hit points, skill points, or base attack... all these things only change indirectly when you have a strength boost or a constitution boost of some kind of enhancement to the form like a bonus to swim or jump...

Traverse's idea is cleaner and easier to use... but now thinking about the entry requirements, I think it needs some sort of power boost if they stay as is... probably to casting.

Human half dragon battle sorcerer 7 (Level 10 character)
This one comes to mind as a decent caster/fighter out of the box
Human half dragon sorcerer 4/ranger 3 (or barbarian 3) (Level 10 character)
This one balances both... and does neither well.
Human half dragon sorcerer 6/ranger 2 (or fighter 2) (Level 11 character)
This one is casting focused with a little bit of melee...

Because of the level adjustment of the half dragon, the character is going to be at least 2 spell levels behind a pure caster and behind hit points on the fighter types... It only gets worse when things are deluted by multiclassing...
If level adjustment buy off is allowed, then this class is fine... if it's not available, I would say it is too weak.

As cheezy as it sounds, have you considered making half dragon into a kind of werecreature or like the hengeyokai?
Spikes01k

This PrC is a nice idea, but it lacks two things I was looking for.

1. A decent 5 level PrC for after Dragon Deciple
2. A way for a 1/2 dragon to become a full pure dragon.

. . .
2. A way for a 1/2 dragon to become a full pure dragon.
Can't be done in twenty levels... Dragon magazine did a write up of racial dragon levels... It let you start out as a baby dragon and work your way up. At twentieth level you still weren't Adult, I don't think.
MageSparrowhawk

06-30-07, 06:18 PM
Spikes, those are both things I was -not- planning on doing from the start...(sorry)

what I mean about the abilities, if the dragon you turn into has DR 5/magic and SR 19, then that's what you have normally; it's not directly based off of your level, only indirectly. Also, what's wrong with having a full BAB? You're going to be behind from both your caster class and level adjustment anyway....
For a better spellcasting progression, look at the first post (the original design)
