Idea for NO Prestige Classes [Archive] - Wizards Community

Anyone ever thought of the following:

Eliminate ALL Prestige Classes. Keep only core classes. Instead of Prestige Classes, give every character bonus "customization feats" with a list of Prestige-Class-like special abilities to choose from (and with most, lower powered abilities would be prereqs).
In this way, instead of collecting prestige classes, you would only have to collect their appropriate special abilities.
Unsure how to balance... Especially spellcasting prestige classes whose special abilities removes every other level of spellcasting advancement...
Any thoughts?

Why?

No, really? Why does it matter whether the character sheet says, "Fighter 2/Wizard 4/Spellsword 4," or "Fighter 4*/Wizard 6*?"

Its just getting hard to collect all of the references needed to select prestige classes. It would be so much easier to have an online electronic reference that simply listed specialization feats and their prereqs.
It is getting difficult for my old arms to lug around 50 pounds of books just to have the prestige classes that my character and his henchmen need...

Just use the prestige classes you like from the books you have. You don't have to use every PC ever printed.

True... However, if you want access to the prestige class (to see if you want it), you have to buy the book... Lots and lots of $'s for WoC. I would not expect WoC to consider my idea. I just think it would be a more elegant solution to customizing characters.

I agree that it has the possiblity of being a simpler solution... We've seen some of this with the substitution features in Complete Mage and the Races books with substitution levels for everybody... and there are some alternate classes in Unearthed Arcana

But part of the problem with making more of these customizations would that balancing the trade off. It would be a headache. Many of the abilities would be too powerful for a feat... unless you wanted to make everything longer feat trees with prerequites akin to prc entry requirements...

Really though, some of the sub features that WotC has given us just aren't that good... Like most of the ones in Complete Mage... like the arcane figher... it's just bad.

You could always make your own PrCs, instead of making a whole new system to replace them.
