So I have this player who wants to play the Incantatrix prestige class from Player's Guide to Faerun and I was wondering what the general opinion on this class is.

Arivia 04-20-07, 03:03 AM	While the general sentiment seems to be that it's an overpowered prestige class, it's also important to note that it has many narrative possibilities and a strong place in the Realms that wasn't carried forward into 3e; see 2e's Draconomicon and Dragon #90.

I forget the exact class features (I haven't looked at it in a while), but the main class feature (the one that lets you apply metamagic feats with spellcraft checks) was limited so that you can't modify a spell to effective level higher than you can normally cast. I'm probably not explaining well... check the PGtF errata...

runestar 04-20-07, 07:50 AM	I forget the exact class features (I haven't looked at it in a while), but the main class feature (the one that lets you apply metamagic feats with spellcraft checks) was limited so that you can't modify a spell to effective level higher than you can normally cast. Its the instant metamagic feature, which lets you apply a metamagic feat to a spell without increasing its lv. You must be able to cast the actual version of the spell before you can do this however. :) It is a very potent prc, and depending on how high you can crank your spellcraft dc, can result in a variety of interest combinations. For example, you could use ring of spell storing to pass personal-range buffs like wraithstrike and divine power around, then persist them with metamagic effect. Likewise, with some twinkling, you can also persist some very potent spells on yourself such as shapechange. Similarly, its improved metamagic feature has very powerful synergies with other effects which let you further reduce metamagic feat slot adjustments, such as easy metamagic and arcane thesis. All in all a fun, power-packed prc. Go for it...:D
Empiro 04-20-07, 05:41 PM	The class doesn't cause any issues as long as the DM doesn't let things get out of hand. My own tips for DMs that might be worried: Don't forget about the errata that says Instant Metamagic cannot increase the effective level of a spell to more than what you can normally cast. House rule that you cannot apply more than one "free" metamagic source to a single spell, including Instant Metamagic, Metamagic Rods, Sudden Metamagic, and so on. House rule that you cannot stack metamagic lowering abilities. I've seen a few DMs around here that have problems with players who twin, split ray, energy admix, maximize and then empower scorching ray -- and it's still just a 4th level spell. Don't let players custom craft their own items that give spellcraft bonuses -- limit it to +5 if you do.
