Warmages are the gods of battlefield magic. They are truly the ultimate blasters. As adventurers they make short work of their opponents but lack in the diversity of a wizard or sorcerer. Some times a warmage will become disillusioned with being an exclusive blaster, having entered many situations where subtlety might have been a better solution. Such mages have had an epiphany: magic isn't just about destruction. From that point on they strive to train in other aspects of the arcane arts, becoming more studious and logical about magic. They begin to relax their militaristic ways and become more scholarly, learning a broad range of topics.

Such former warmages are known as Inspired Battlecasters. This prestige class is great for players who used to like blasting, but matured at some point during the game and realized that just being a blaster isn't all that great, but at the same time that player doesn't wish to roll up a new character.

Class Features

Spell Swap: At 1st level, and every odd numbered level thereafter, an Inspired Battlecaster forgets a number of spells equal to his intelligence bonus and replaces them with each with a non-damaging spell of the same level. The spells switched must be of a level the Inspired Battlecaster can already cast. If an odd numbered level happens to fall upon a level upon which he gains a new spell level, the spells switched may not be of that level, but see below.

Selective Learning: An inspired battlecaster searches ancient tomes and takes tutelage from wizards, becoming more like them in the process. He fills his head with new knowledge that pushes away some of the spells he was drilled in. Whenever he gains a new spell level, he must choose a number of spells equal to his intelligence bonus to exchange for a nin-damaging spell of that same level.

For example, Hirangal is a level 10 warmage when he finally realizes that the inability to turn invisible is really killing him. He takes 2 levels of Inspired Battlecaster. He has a +4 Intelligence modifier. At 1st level, CL 11, he chooses to forget flame strike, arc of lightning, Lightning Bolt, and Mel'fs Acid Arrow but gains Teleport, Wall of Stone, Haste, and Knock. At 2nd level, CL 12, he learns a new spell level. Out of the 8 6th level spells added to his list, 4 of them must be changed. He loses acid fog, Fire seeds, Otiluke's Freezing sphere, and chain lightning but gains greater dispel magic, true seeing, legend lore, and analyze dweomer.

If a new spell level and an odd level of this prestige class fall onto the same level, the caster must effectively choose double the amount of spells to switch that level; half must be from spell levels at least 1 below the previous level and the other half must be from the new level. (hopes thats clear enough)

Eager Study: At 2nd level, the Inspired Battlecaster's newfound love for studying begins to manifest. From then on he has a +2 Insight bonus on all knowledge checks. This bonus rises to +4 at 6th level, and to +6 at 10th level.

Obtain Familiar: Beginning at level 4, an inspired battlecaster may gain the service of a familiar the way a sorcerer or wizard does. Treat his spellcasting hit dice as his master level for all intents and purposes.

Bonus Feat: At 8th level, the Inspired Battlecaster has taken up a crafting hobby. He gains a bonus item creation feat, which may be any one for which he meets the requirements.

Arcane Synthesis: At 10th level, the Inspired Battlecaster has reached perfection. His class list is forevermore treated as being the sorcerer/wizard list for the purposes of using spell trigger items. He may never again take a level in warmage. (this is something i need the most help with, actually)
