It's Firefly, thank you very much.

I don't think the companion would be a 10 level Prestige Class.

I'd recomend that alignment ne restricted to any non-evil, non-chaotic and 8+INT Skill points but overall this class seems rather silly and a poor representation of the Companions in Firefly.

1) It's FIREFLY you gorram mudder

2) Companions are not always female, they are simply the most encountered in the series/movie.

3) Companions don't cast spells. Neither are they in any way mystical at all.

Here's my suggestion:

Write them as a skillmonky PrC with D4 hit die and 1/2 BAB (wizard hit die and BAB)

Letting them add their Companion level to social skill checks is a very good thing.

I'd look into some of the Bardic Music uses for abilities, things like Facinate, Suggestion, Inspire Confidence, and things like that

Oh, and I'd let them take Craft: Alchemy as a class skill, and probably give them Poison Use as well.

In short, it's the ultimate Party Face. Diplomacy checks will easily be in the +50's, so she could convince anyone of just about anything, particularly if she uses her Facinate and Suggestion abilities.

Inara was trained from a young age, as all companions are. It's more of a base class than a prestige class. Think bard with a lot of variant abilities...

If you really want to do a PrC, think about what you want to accomplish with it. If making a graceful, geisha-esque character is your goal, then think of lots of abilities that play to that archeatype.

(A nit pick... I believe there were male companions as well in the movie Serenity. And a poor base attack progression would go from +0 to +5 over 10 levels.)

Class features that allow for charisma to different skills or saves, decreased times for gather information checks, calling in favors, manipulating people and spotting manipulation easier, maintaining one's calm even under unusually stressful circumstances, and adding odd skills to your class skill list from your diverse friendships are all possibilities...

Even though it violates the character concept a bit, I'd go with a 5 level prc since diplomatic characters don't see as much use in a 'standard' D&D game... especially since rogues depend on sneak attack and I don't see the companion class advancing that at all...

Just my initial thoughts...

Edit: Whoops... I see Shneekey already suggested variant bardic stuff... great minds and all... :D

This reminds me of the Celebrant of Sharess from PGtF... Only it makes a little less sense than this one. Oh, just give them the normal poor BAB progression with +1 every even level, it won't break it. That, or... kinda reminds me of Spymaster with a penchant for flirtation.

Anyway... I think that all could be done with a bard. So sue me. It is quite weak, imo - especially considering the insane prerequisites. Two skill foci... Sheesh, it could be worse, but not worse. But a bard/spymaster or a bard/evangelist could pull that off so well, you'll never know what hit you.
