So, say I start out as a multiclass Duskblade/Swordsage before I take any levels in the class. Can I replace a spell I know for a new spell of equal level (as mentioned in the Duskblade description) even if I do it during a Jade Phoenix Mage level? Same thing with the maneuvers; can I switch them out at every even numbered level even though the JPM description doesn't actually say it? |
| Shadowhowler08-23-07, 08:32 AM | In a word, no. Most of the PrC's that grant you more caster levels in your previous casting class spcificly state that you gain new caster levels, acsess to new spells and spell levels as if you had advanced a level in your previous casting class, but you do not gain any of the other special abilities of the old class. Common examples of this: A Wizard/Cleric becomes a Mystic Theurge. When he levels, his casting class and acsess to new spells in both wizard and cleric go up one... but he does NOT gain the free metamagic feats a wizard normaly gets, nor does he gain additional turn undead atempts or other special abilities from his cleric class. A Wizard/Rogue takes the Arcane trickster class. When he levels he gains another level of spellcasting, but again does not gain the metamagic feats. He may gain additional Sneak Attack Damage (as per the Arcane Trickster discription) but he will not gain improved uncanny dodge, or any other Rogue special abilities. Savvy? |
| Staple08-23-07, 10:49 AM | Actually, you can. The gain and loss of new spells is under the "Spellcasting" heading in the class feature description of the original class. Thus, you are eligible to lose old spells as level up through JPM (or any class that grants progression) because the only class feature of the original class that improves contains the ability to lose old spells. I didn't check ToB for the clause on maneuvers, but I would say JPM does not allow you to lose old maneuvers because it's a JPM class feature that's granting you new maneuvers, not an extension of a Swordsage class feature. |
| Tectorman09-17-07, 05:33 PM | Okay, thanks, and next question: A Jade Phoenix Mage coming from a Duskblade background casts spells spontaneously (i.e., he can't benefit from the Quicken Spell feat for his Duskblade spells). Does the JPM Quickening Strike ability (might not be the right name, but you know what I mean) supercede that, or does that ability become useless for anyone not coming from a Wizard, Wu Jen, etc., background? Thanks in advance. |
| Dead_Weasel09-18-07, 07:50 PM | Although I am away from my books at the moment, it would depend on the nature of the Quickening Strike (or whatever its name is) ability. If the ability needs to applied to the spell at the time of its casting as though it were a metamagic feat (unlikely), then yes, it is useless to you. If not (the more probable case, in my estimation), then you can use the ability as normal. |
| Tectorman10-16-07, 03:07 PM | Okay, third: How long does it take to perform an Emerald Immolation (cuz I don't think it says in the ability description)? |
| Marcus Majarra10-16-07, 11:32 PM | You default to the norm for spell-like abilities: a standard action. |
