| korcheck11-09-07, 06:22 PM | I love the idea of going either fighter or monk with a specialty in hand to hand fighting. What I am thinking is if there are others beside the drunken master that I could go with a sort of Jackie Chan type character with experience in multiple forms of hand to hand styles or forms. |
| Korrupt801611-09-07, 11:27 PM | ya could try the Shoulin Fist |
| korcheck11-13-07, 11:10 AM | Cool so thats makes two PrC's are there any others? |

My friend got this book and I love it, because I loves monk!!! Oh, gods, NO. Mongoose's work shifts between "Horrendously overcomplex but mechanically useless" to "Dear :censored: Lord who the hell balanced this, a rabid monkey?". They occasionally get it right but more often than not roll a natural 1 on their Develop Rules check. This sets aside the fact that the swordsage is what the monk should have been from day 1, but hey. There's plenty other than the Drunken Master. Just off the top of my head: Complete Warrior: Tattooed Monk Unapproachable East: Shou Disciple Oriental Adventures (3.0): Shintao Monk Henshin Mystic Ninja Spy Complete Divine: Sacred Fist Complete Arcane: Enlightened Fist Expanded Psionics Handbook / Free in the SRD Fist of Zuoken (in SRD as Psionic Fist) Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords Swordsage (base class) Bloodclaw Master Shadow Sun Ninja There's no doubt others as well, but those are just off the top of my head. If you want Jackie Chan, get the hell away from the monk (which is a single style, and it does it poorly) and pick up the swordsage (particularly with the unarmed variant in the same book). To get Jackie Chan, focus on Setting Sun, Diamond Mind, and Tiger Claw styles, perhaps with a splash of Stone Dragon and/or Shadow Hand in there as well. You will be *amazed* at how much fun you'll be having and at how much the monk was holding you back from mechanically representing the martial artist in your mind. |

If not, are there any unofficial ones? Pretty much anything with Superior Unarmed strike or Shou disciple levels, methinks ;) It can be kung fu with the right flavor and feat choice - I can't assume that I know what feats best represent the various shaolin schools, so you're free to pick what suits you best. If you like the ToB mechanic for the monk - I'm not really convinced it's the right flavor, but a lot of folks here swear by it - then the swordsage is your guy. There are also quite a few other monk PrCs... Zerth Cenobite (CPsi), Arcanopath Monk (Dragon comp), Monk of the Enabled Hand (same), Monk of the X wind (Dragon issue 31-something), Monk of the Long Death (Player's Guide to Faerun), Sun Soul Monk (Waterdeep), and oh, quite a few others. In fact, with the Tashalatora feat from Secrets of Sarlona, any psionic class or PrC becomes a great monk PrC ;) . T_S's list is good, and covers most of the common PrCs. I have only one remark: due to the skill prerequisites I wouldn't consider Ninja Spy a good PrC for single-classed monks. However, OA has the original Tattooed monk, and the update of the material in Dragon 318 presents the PrC in a way much better than CWarrior does. |
