| Wall09-15-07, 09:15 PM | So Magic of Faerun has this "Mage Killer" prestige class. I read the flavor and mused about how awesome the idea of a mage-hunting-mage is. But unfortunately, the class itself was not up to par... by any standards. Augment summoning? Spell Focus a few times? A small save bonus? That's it? And you need a couple of feats and high level spells (4-5, I think) to qualify. So, I know it's old news. And it has probably been complained about more than a few times by now. But the mage-hunting-mage concept is too much fun to pass up, so I think we should come up with a better one. I can't come up with enough abilities to fill a 10-level class myself, so I come to you all to ask for help. Anyone interested? I think a few abilities are no-brainers here. Just some ideas: Saving Throw Bonus: The original class gives you saving throw bonuses, but they're only on one. +1 Fort or Ref at a few levels. Seems kinda silly, right? I think the best option would be to replace this with a scaling saving throw bonus, on all saves, but only against spells. Makes sense, right? In this case, I'm think a bonus equal to 1/2 the class level. Improved Counterspelling: If not a prerequisite for the class, then as a bonus feat at least. I think it should be a prerequisite, so some further improvements to Counterspelling would be appropriate. Perhaps being able to counterspell as an immediate action? Mage Bane Magic: The Bane Magic feat appears in a couple of books, the Magebane weapon quality appears in Complete Arcane, and Complete Mage allows rangers to make arcanists their favored enemy; so I don't think this would be uncalled for. Maybe like the Keeper of the Cerulean Sign, with the bonus on DC/Damage versus spellcasters. Concerning the base statistics, I think the typical arcanist traits should apply: d4 HD, low BAB, and good Will saves. Anyone else? |

In trying to come up with ideas for my own PrCs with a similar bent, I found the class you're talking about and also found it lackluster. In one of the PrCs I posted just recently (Dark Pact Enforcer (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13704988#post13704988)) , I included an ability that may be worth considering (though I'm not saying it should definitely be in what you're making here): Reflexive Resistance (Su): At 5th level, once per day you may use a spell-like ability that grants you spell resistance as an immediate action. This functions as the spell spell resistance using your highest arcane caster level except that it lasts a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). At 9th level, you may use this one additional time per day. |
