Master of Masks vs. Chamelon [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-24-07, 05:49 PM Now, I'm working on a character and the folks over in the optimization section recommended Chameleon instead of Master of Masks. Or some combination of the two. Now in your opinions,

1: Which is better: MoM or Chameleon? Please give details.

2: What is the best combination of these two classes?

06-24-07, 08:53 PM i would say MoM has the edge when geting into an un-planned fight, because he can "change" mid-fight. But chamelion is awesome because more selctions/abilities, as long as you know the fight is coming.

As for combos i would say go MoM max then get rest of lvls in chamelion.

06-24-07, 09:29 PM Master of Masks gives out a couple of weak benefits. Even with the ability to swap them on the fly, it's still not that good. None of them are all that useful in combat or otherwise.

Chameleon generally requires you to choose an archetype and stick with it for the day. But you can do much better with that archetype, considering Ability Boon and the potent three foci (Combat, Arcane, Divine). D&D generally rewards specialization over generalization; even incarnum and the bard can be quite specialized and potent if you know what you're doing. Master of Masks is not.

And Chameleon 10 is fantastic on its own. +6 to two ability scores, dual cherry-picking casting or the ability to run a gish, etc. If you're looking for a combination, take all ten levels of Chameleon, and then use the casting advancement within MoM to advance the Chameleon casting. Just because you can't use most of its class features to qualify for stuff, doesn't mean you can't bait-and-switch with the Chameleon's abilities.

06-26-07, 01:55 AM While MoM is a nifty idea, its benefits scale poorly. In terms of power, the Chameleon is clearly ahead.

06-27-07, 11:19 AM MoM is a great dip for the gladiator's mask. Proficiency with all exotic weapons? Yes, please. Now your Persistant Chameleon can wield a spiked chain without having to spend a feat on it, as well as being able to switch to 2 broadblade shortswords and boost AC on demand.

Chameleon is much better, but more subtle. Cherry picking spells at their lowest level is a handy ability.
