| Easalyamusedoldman09-25-07, 10:32 PM | I am planing ahead for my lvl 1 dwarf monk and am considering two prestige classes from CW tattooed monk and drunken fighter. I know some of the advantages of the tattooed monk but how do they fair next to a drunken fighter? Drunken Master all the way! They get improb. weapons and some cool movement based abilities. Plus Drink like a Demon goes well with a dwarf flavor wise. |
| dman1123509-25-07, 10:49 PM | My vote's for Drunken Master. Tattoed monk is not that good in my opinion (I know I'm gonna get hell for that statement). |
| Barloch09-26-07, 02:12 AM | If I've said it once I've said it a million times, you don't need a prc to play a good monk! Usually you end up getting screwed out of some really good abilities for some meh ones. If you're looking for something FLAVOR wise however then pick your prc based on that. But if you DO go tatooed monk, only take 9 levels max, theres no point to take the tenth you don't get an ability. |
| Paradox_of_Life09-26-07, 04:13 AM | I disagree with straight monk being a viable option on the premise of its performance of semi-optimized play. It requires too much MAD in my opinion, in which a druid would be better. However, if is based on personal reference, thats cool. I just want to make the distinction between a 'good' monk versus a 'fun' monk. To the OP. Drunken Master all the way, with a dip in Tattooed to get a tattoo of a mug of ale for drinking bonuses. Also, Drunken Master would go well with VoP, as all your improvised weapons would gain enhancement bonuses. You'd basically be a friar. Its a funny image to see some guy swaying, smash his beer bottle, and stab someone with what is essentially a +5 broken bottle. |
| The_Shaman09-26-07, 06:40 AM | Heh, it's ironic as both classes got unfortunately nerfed during their 3.5 translation. I'm more partial to the Tattooed monk (ideally the Dragon 318 version, not the CW one - flurry progression is a nice thing), but the drunken master might be more your thing, especially if you don't care about the extra speed that monks have. My favourite build for the PrC would be monk 6/Shou Disciple 5/DMaster 9: with a monk belt or a monk tattoo/SUS. This way, you have the base damage of a lvl 20 monk, you get superior improvised weapons, you can flurry with any melee weapon - including, I dare think, improvised weapons, and you get quite a few feats. BAB is, unfortunately, capped at 15 unless you use fractional BAB advancement. You lose breath of flame but as a lvl 10 ability, it's not so great anyway. |
| dman1123509-26-07, 10:18 AM | That build looks great. It's too bad drink like a demon is terrible. Stupid wisdom penalties. |
| Easalyamusedoldman09-26-07, 10:25 AM | That build looks great. It's too bad drink like a demon is terrible. Stupid wisdom penalties. He is a dwarf, they like to drink... |
| The_Shaman09-26-07, 10:57 AM | That build looks great. It's too bad drink like a demon is terrible. Stupid wisdom penalties. Well, if you aren't going for SF, that might not be so necessary... Have you checked the Shou Disciple armor proficiency column? It indicates that light armor does not prevent Shous from using flurry of blows. Therefore, if you decide that the wis + level bonus and the extra movement are not that important (as in, you intend to be drunk most of the time), you can always don a chain shirt. I believe there was a dwarven magic item that was a tankard always full of ale :) . |
| dman1123509-26-07, 12:28 PM | I actually don't even know where it's from. And yes, there is an item that does that. Where is it from? MiC? It's watered down ale or wine, but it's alchohol. That may be a way to mitigate the AC stuff a little. |
| april15197809-26-07, 02:43 PM | My vote's for Drunken Master. Tattoed monk is not that good in my opinion (I know I'm gonna get hell for that statement). If you get hell for it, that is thier opinion, but I have to say each has thier advantages and disadvantages, depending on the camnpaign and the other players... More must be known to weigh the use of each PrC... |
| endofdreams10-09-07, 03:04 PM | I prefer to alter the decanter of endless water to a decanter of ale, or, arguably, gasoline (afterall, gasoline is alcohol). take the flametouched feat from Uneartharcana. take ten levels of drunken master. At its lowest setting, you could drink from the decanter, then spray it on your enemies and light them up with breath of flame, if you happen to catch on fire, your feat stops the damage from being set aflame. -- as another option to buying a monks belt, you could utilize superior unarmed strike from tome of battle. I always suggest getting the feral template too. theres something about a hairy, drunken, monstrous humanoid, blazing like a torch in the fading hours of twilight and rending its enemies to pieces as they are swallowed in a fiery hellstorm, that tugs at my emotions. |
| imakuni6710-12-07, 10:22 AM | I'd still consider getting improved evasion (Monk 9) before dabbling in anything else. |
| DragonmasterZoc10-12-07, 07:33 PM | If you just want a generically useful monk PrC, you could always modify Sun Soul Monk (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050601a&page=4). I always figured the one thing that the monk class was missing was lasers. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what Loross is? |
