| Kearif02-01-07, 04:40 PM | I was high on pop-tarts and drunk on Mountain Dew and I made the mistake of watching an episode of Poke'mon. During a battle sequence I had a fun idea for a Prestige Class based on Poke'mon trainers, only not so corny. I need help with all of these: First and formost: small portible devises for carrying monsters Monsters changing to bigger, badder monsters Class Skills, BAB, Saves, HD, and Prereq's I was thinking that a monster tamer would be able to add a new monster to his collection at first level and every even level. If it is a 10 level prestige class then that max's out at 6 monsters just like in the show and game. Idea's please? |
| Darth Sephiroth02-01-07, 07:55 PM | You could use my Summoner Class if you want, it could be handled similarly if you want to try it that way. Ideas for class abilities. Sealed Summoning: You gain a single monster you can summon that you have defeated in personal combat. This creature must have an INT score of 2 or less. You must spend 100 GP/HD of the creature to seal its spirit into an object of your choosing (Spheres, cards, ect...) These summons advance per the advancement section of their stat block equivalently to your class level. Gain the benefits of the Conjurer specialist variant from Unearthed Arcana. Gain abilities for healing your summons For prerequisites you ought to have Augment Summon, ranks in Knowledge skills, and some minor casting ability. |
| Slightly_Insane_Mage02-02-07, 06:36 PM | Here's a couple of thoughts. Make the monsters summonable like the Holy Liberator's Celestial Companion and make have a Familiar, Animal Companion, or Speaical Mount. |
| Kearif03-09-07, 08:32 PM | IS ANY BODY OUT THERE!!! :allalone: |
| Richmud03-09-07, 09:29 PM | Well you know the truth about paladin mounts right? If not look here: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0373.html |
| WinterPsionic03-13-07, 06:28 PM | IS ANY BODY OUT THERE!!! :allalone: Sure we are but we try to avoid Pokemon fanboys... All your looking to do is have someone with a "wand" of "summon animal" limited to a specific animal that can later be augmented by class abilities. Ex. Hi I'm a lvl 6 monster tamer that has a wand of Summon Wolf, thanks to my class abilities I can augment it to be a Dire wolf, while my buddy can augment it to be a Legendary wolf because he's a level 10 Monster Tamer. Go from there, level 5 they can augment a creature with any +2CR template or higher, at level 10 it can be a +4CR, adjust as neccessary for balance, example I love the Dungeonbred and Gaudian templates from Dungeonscape, being able to summon a creature with one of those templates would be pretty cool. Also limit it that they're unique bond to their nature disallows them froming having more then 1 on the feild since you want to stick to Pokemon, then again my nephew has informed me he can now have 2 on the feilds....make it a class option. |
| Kearif03-14-07, 08:43 PM | we try to avoid Pokemon fanboys... I AM NOT A POKEMON FANBOY!!!!!!!!!! Like I said, I think Pokemon is corny. However, I like several other saturday morning cartoons on that station and it was on, opps. I was a PokeNut until early 2000, after that I mostly lost interest in the show and 2-3 years later I lost interest in the game and all other things Pokemon, but I still think this could a fun PrC. The problem there is that it's limited to animals. The templates thing is a good idea though. I'll work on that for a while. More ideas are always welcome, especially good ones. |
| WinterPsionic03-14-07, 09:58 PM | ...ok well I suppose you could extend it to magical beast, some abberations and possibly some LOW HD dragons...and maybe some plants...and constructs... |
| Rinian203-15-07, 10:08 AM | Well, I haven't seen much of the show and I'm working by memory here but before any monster (I've seen enough of the show to consciously decide to never utter the P-word) was ever captured, it had to be beaten up first. In D&D, most monsters that get beaten up just die. In the show, nothing dies. This would mean that the first thing that a Monster Tamer would need would be the ability to deal nonlethal damage. He would need a limit to how many monsters he could "store" and for how long they could be taken out of storage... which sounds suspiciously like spells. You could use a magic user's spell progression to determine how many monsters you could store. Charisma would be the obvious stat that would allow the Monster Tamer bonus slots. I'd say that each slot would hold a monster of the Monster Tamer's level plus the spell level. So a 1st-level monster slot could hold a CR 2 monster for a 1st-level Monster Tamer, but a 3rd-level Monster Tamer could hold a CR 4 monster in the same slot. I would assume that a high level slot could also more easily hold a level CR monster. Most spell using Prestige Classes that use their own spell lists (like the Assassin) only have spells that go up to 4th-level. This would mean that once the Monster Tamer gets to 10th-level, without any bonus slots from Charisma he could hold (if we use the Assassin's spell progression as the basis) twelve monsters; three each of CR 11, CR 12, CR 13, and CR 14. Which does sound fairly powerful. However, in the show, if the Monster Tamer didn't do well enough, the monster would attack him rather than his enemies. Which does sound fairly dangerous. I'd suggest either a very hard Bluff check or the option of a class-specific feat that would allow the Monster Tamer to call a powerful monster without the check. I'm not sure how you'd go about limiting the duration that the monsters would fight for the Monster Tamer but I hope I've given you some helpful hints. Oh, they would definitely get a familiar too. Maybe a shocker lizard... |
| Kearif03-15-07, 01:11 PM | Oh, they would definitely get a familiar too. Maybe a shocker lizard... shocker lizards are much cuter than some electric mouse anyway. |

This is a good point, I'll be sure to make that part of the monster companion. Monsters can also choose to join the group, that should be an option too. I'm thinking healing spells, monster spell (Hold, Charm, etc), and calm emotions type stuff. I was planning on using Handle Animal or maybe Diplomacy for that. I just saw this http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20070209a&page=4 It's pretty close but the monster selection is too limited, and I don't want that flavor. |
| Leress03-15-07, 01:49 PM | I believe there is Monster Tamer class in the pdf supplement called "Bride of the Portable Hole" you can get if for free at rpgnow.com |
| FrostWolf03-15-07, 01:58 PM | Arms and Equipment has a feat called "Tame [creature type]". lets you train any critters of 4 (or was it 6) or less INT of the creature type you choose. Aberations is a good one... I'll see what I can do to make "Pokeballs" for you later, I need to sleep now. |

| PrinceCurtis03-17-07, 02:56 PM | I can't believe it! .... Well someone was "bound" to try it ... |
| Kearif03-27-07, 02:25 PM | Thank you for your usele... err I mean ... useful input, PrinceCurtis. Does any one else have any ideas, the more input I get the better I can make the Monster Tamer |
| teshen03-27-07, 03:51 PM | I was high on pop-tarts and drunk on Mountain Dew. . . Never an auspicous beginning... :D Well, I don't have any Pokemon experience... I'm just working from pop culture jokes like Robot Chicken and Drawn Together (and a couple of posters' previous comment)... but give it a serious try. Animals? Riiiight. Anything that shoots lighting or has a huge plant growing out of it's back can't just be an animal. You'd have to include other creature types as WinterPsionic mentioned. Don't cartoon character's encourage their monster, and after said encouragement the monster does better... You probably want a few buffing spells useable only on your 'pets' or maybe it could be similar to a bardic feature? And if none of the monsters actually die, then you probably are going to have a spell-like ability useable a few times per day to heal and resurrect your monster and an auto gentle repose if you can't bring them back that day... I suggest spell-like because I think resurrection spells of any stripe would be well outside this 'summoner's' spell casting. The PrC would probably have an average base attack... I see them as wandering around, getting into trouble... but depending on their pets and friends as much as their own skills to survive. You might consider using wild empathy as a prerequisite. :thinks: ...that's all I can think of at the moment. |
| PrinceCurtis03-27-07, 05:05 PM | Well I'm sorry for useless input. that was my way of sayin g i'm glad someone wants to try this. |
| teshen03-27-07, 06:30 PM | Well I'm sorry for useless input. that was my way of sayin g i'm glad someone wants to try this. I imagine it just seemed sarcastic, rather than true humor... and it should be ok. The internet is notorious for lacking the 'color' of speech. :) |

The internet is notorious for lacking the 'color' of speech. :) Nonesense  your average joe :P is just incapable of truly demonstrating the full range :ton: of emotions that can be conveyed :evillaugh via online dialogue:plotting: ============================== Just stick to special "wands" and class abilities that allow you to apply templates. |
| multipleheads03-28-07, 01:45 PM | I think I solved your Pokeball problem......those oynx figurines of wonderous power things. Like the one in the Drizzt books. Just make a class feature where you can imprison unconcius/helpless (because, don't laugh at me, but if I remeber correctly you didn't nescisarily have to "beat them up", you could just put them to sleep or something) creatures of increasing CR in personally made chunks of onyx. They already have set, reasonable limits to the amount of time they are alowed to be summoned. Not very cost effective however....but you can work around that. Heads |

Isn't that what he just said? Pokeballs= Beads of Force that shrink and don't do damage. |
| WinterPsionic03-28-07, 10:46 PM | Isn't that what he just said? No, he used a blanket statement saying emotion couldn't be conveyed on msg boards. I said 85% of the people on the boards are just to stupid to do so. End result is similiar but the statements are quite different:P The Onyx Figurines is a pretty good idea, may want to go with different types of stone for flavor though, as my nephew just explained to me there are more then 1 kind of ball so maybe you could use different materials for the different types? |

End result is similiar but the statements are quite different:P I realized that last night. Anywho about the different types. What they do is important, not what they're made of. Here's a list of what i can think of off the top of my head. The standard Pokeball each with an increasing rate of capture: PokeBalls, Superballs (I think, it's been a minute sense i played), Ultra Balls, and Master Balls (100% capture rate) Heavy Balls: increases the rate of capturing heavy creatures. Love Balls: increases the rate if the creature is of opposite gender of waht your using against it. Nest Ball: captures lower (then you moster i think) monsters better. Friend Ball (not sure if that's the actuall name): Makes capture friendlier towards you. MOre to come.. i just wracked my brain, that stuff goes into deep memory when i'm not playing. |

Not very cost effective however....but you can work around that.I have just found one of those pokemon gameboy game manuals. There are lots of different pokeballs. I only knew of four, and there are like 20 now! Maybe instead of different strengths of capture item (pokeball, great ball, ultra ball, master ball) I'll go with different capture items for different creature types. Garnet for Elemental, Amethyst for magical beasts, Peridot for outsiders, Tourmaline for Abberations, and Topaz for Undead? How long can Guenhwyvar be in the real world, and what other limits and abilities does the figure have? I know it heals the panther does it do anything else and how much healing does it do? |
| PrinceCurtis03-29-07, 01:52 PM | well just got to a site like psypokes.com to get the list... |
| Kearif07-18-07, 11:15 PM | I am still working on this prestige class and more ideas are always welcome. |
