Greetings to you all,

the chameleon is a PrC in Races of Destiny that allows a character to use a good number of class features from other classes, like spellcasting, evasion and wild empathy. However, there is place for improvement as the chameleon should be able to mimic other class features, but from the recently added classes.

So, I had this idea: create new aptitudes and mimics for the chameleon. Here goes.

Aptitude Focus:
Mind Focus: You gain the ability to manifest powers as a psion. Your manifester level is equal to twice your chameleon level, you gain power points equal to 10 plus 15 per chameleon level and you know 2 powers per chameleon level. You can select powers up to 2nd level at 1st level, and 1 level higher at every odd-numbered chameleon level (2nd-level powers at 1st, 3rd-level powers at 3rd, 4th-level powers at 5th, and so on). You may select a discipline each time you select this aptitude. Like a psion, you use your Intelligence modifier for DC and bonus power points. While this focus is active, you gain a +2 competence bonus to Knowledge (psionics) and Psicraft checks and a +2 bonus on Will saves. At 5th level, these bonuses improve to +4.

Sorcerous Focus: As arcane focus, except you cast spells as a sorcerer. You use your Charisma modifier instead of your Intelligence modifier for DCs and bonus spells. You can spell knows equal to the original number of spells you can cast per day minus one (minimum one)(table 5-2, page 112).

Nature Focus: As divine focus, except you cast spells as a druid. While this focus is active, you gain a +2 competence bonus to Knowledge (nature) and Survival checks and a +2 bonus on Fortitude and Will saves. At 5th level, these bonuses improve to +4.

Sublime Focus: You gain to ability to use maneuvers as a martial adept (Tome of Battle). You can select a number of maneuvers equal to 3 plus 1 per chameleon level from any 3 discplines. You also gain 1 stance at 1st level and on every 3 levels from any of those same disciplines as your maneuvers. You may prepare a number of maneuvers equal to 2 plus 1 per 2 chameleon level. You must meet the prerequisites in order to take a maneuver or stance. When determining your initiator level, your chameleon levels are treated as martial adept levels. While this focus is active, you gain a +2 competence bonus to attack rolls and on Martial Lore checks and a +2 bonus on Reflex saves. At 5th level, these bonuses improve to +4.

Mimic Class Feature:
Bardic Music (Su): You can use music and songs to various effects like a bard. You can use the various effects according to your number of ranks in the Perform skills. Your bard level is equal to twice your chameleon level.

Hexblade Curse (Su): You can bestow curses like a hexblade (Complete Warrior). The afflicted penalties are at -2 at 3rd, -4 at 6th level and -6 at 9th level. Your hexblade level is equal to twice your chameleon level.

Wild Shape (Su): You gain the wild shape ability of a druid. You druid level is equal to twice your chameleon level for the purposes of HD limitations and duration. At 3rd level, you may change into any Small or Medium animal. At 6th level, you may change into any Tiny or Large animal. At 9th level, you may change into any Huge animal in addition of any plant creature.

Ok, that's all I can come up with for now. Let's see what you can do.

Mind Focus: You gain the ability to manifest powers as a psion. You gain power points equal to 20 plus 10 per chameleon level and you know 2 powers per chameleon level. You can select powers up to 2nd level at 1st level, and 1 level higher at every odd-numbered chameleon level (2nd-level powers at 1st, 3rd-level powers at 3rd, 4th-level powers at 5th, and so on). You may select a discipline each time you select this aptitude. Like a psion, you use your Wisdom modifier for DC and bonus power points. While this focus is active, you gain a +2 competence bonus to Knowledge (psionics) and Psicraft checks and a +2 bonus on Will saves. At 5th level, these bonuses improve to +4.You'll need to note a manifester level (probably double class level to follow that of the casting foci). Additionally, that's too many PP on the low end and too few PP on the high end; power point gains are generally not linear. Perhaps a custom set of values (based on the psychic warrior) might be in order? Finally, psions use Intelligence for their relevant modifiers, not Wisdom.

Sorcerous Focus: As arcane focus, except you cast spells as a sorcerer. You use your Charisma modifier instead of your Intelligence modifier for DCs and bonus spells. You can spell knows equal to half the original number of spells you can cast per day (table 5-2, page 112).Just call it Spontaneous Casting Focus, and grant it as an additional option instead of an actual focus to characters with spellcasting foci.

As for slots per day and spells known? I'd suggest increasing the quantity of slots at each level by one (maybe not, considering that the chameleon can already choose his spells on a daily basis), and setting the spells known to the original quantity of slots minus one (minimum one). So a 10th-level chameleon would either get 4 base slots for prepared spells or for spontaneous spells at SL 1. If he took the latter option, he'd also have three spells known to choose from.

Nature Focus: As divine focus, except you cast spells as a druid. While this focus is active, you gain a +2 competence bonus to Knowledge (nature) and Survival checks and a +2 bonus on Fortitude and Will saves. At 5th level, these bonuses improve to +4.Offer this as an option alongside Divine Focus instead of as a focus itself. Divine Focus already gets you access to every single divine spell printed; the only benefit to taking this is that you get a different set of skill bonuses. Perhaps something similar with the arcane focus would be in order?

Sublime Focus: You gain to ability to use maneuvers as a martial adept (Tome of Battle). You can select a number of maneuvers equal to 3 plus 1 per chameleon level from any 3 discplines. You also gain 1 stance at 1st level and on every 3 levels from any of those same disciplines as your maneuvers. You may prepare a number of maneuvers equal to 2 plus 1 per 2 chameleon level. Your initiator level is equal to half the levels in non-martial adept classes plus your chameleon level OR equal to the levels in martial adept classes plus your chameleon level. While this focus is active, you gain a +2 competence bonus to attack rolls and on Martial Lore checks and a +2 bonus on Reflex saves. At 5th level, these bonuses improve to +4.Mostly fine, but two things. First, specify that maneuver prerequisites must be met as normal, but that taking one maneuver allows you to qualify higher up (or so forth). Second, why do you have this sentence?Your initiator level is equal to half the levels in non-martial adept classes plus your chameleon level OR equal to the levels in martial adept classes plus your chameleon level.Nobody else adds things this way. It's always half your non-martial adept levels PLUS your martial adept levels, not either/or. Just say that for the purpose of determining your initiator level, chameleon is a martial adept class. It's more elegant and more fair.

Bardic Music: You can use music and songs to various effects like a bard. You can use the various effects according to your number of ranks in the Perform skills.Specify an effective bard level. I don't know what to suggest off the top of my head.

Hexblade Curse: You can bestow curses like a hexblade (Complete Warrior). The afflicted penalties are at -2 at 3rd, -4 at 6th level and -6 at 9th level.Specify an effective hexblade level. I'd suggest pegging it at double your chameleon level in line with other PrC class abilities with class-level-based save DCs.

Wild Shape: You gain the wild shape ability of a druid. You druid level is equal to twice your chameleon level for the purposes of HD limitations, size and creature type (animal, plant, elemental).First, specify an effective class level for the purpose of duration and other effects not given. I don't know what to suggest, however, given that using this ability as written already allows you to out-druid the druid in this regard, and the druid's already rather powerful! Perhaps you should cut this ability entirely.

Additionally, all of the Mimic Class Feature effects require an ability type descriptor (Ex, Su, or Sp). The three above should all be Su.

Thanks for your comments ! I'll be working on a Pact Focus (binder), Mystery Focus (shadowcaster), Name Focus (truenamer), Eldritch Focus (warlock) and Incarnum Focus (incarnate) next. As for class features, I was thinking the Marshall's / Dragon Shaman's auras, the Duskblade's spell channelling and the Wilder's wild surge.

Well, it would refer to too many spontaneous spellcasting classes, yet all I want is the sorcerer aspect. To be sure, there are also spontaneous divine casting classes, like the favored soul and the shaman.

True, but since you cannot choose the same focus twice, you couldn't cast spells as a cleric and as a druid, which is what I want.I'm confused. As I'd said, divine focus gives you access to every single divine spell. So you don't have to choose between grabbing spells from the cleric list, the druid list, or various cleric domains. You simply get them all at the same time; granting druid spell access instead actually restricts things. The only special thing the druid gets is spontaneous summoning, and that can likely be solved by allowing the spontaneous variant to function on the divine focus as well.

Thanks for your comments ! I'll be working on a Pact Focus (binder), Mystery Focus (shadowcaster), Name Focus (truenamer), Eldritch Focus (warlock) and Incarnum Focus (incarnate) next. As for class features, I was thinking the Marshall's / Dragon Shaman's auras, the Duskblade's spell channelling and the Wilder's wild surge.Let's see:
Pact Focus should allow either three vestiges or two at maximum. If it's three, grant the second at 5th level and the third at 10th level. Otherwise just grant the second one at 5th level.
Mystery Focus should have a progression based on the slots-per-day from the casting foci. Perhaps at 5th (or 6th, and stagger the progression down?), you should move the low-level stuff to be spell-like (as with the shadowcaster). You may want to do something to compensate for the fact that each low-level mystery gets an additional use when it changes type (spell -> Sp -> Su).
Name Focus? I'd suggest not; this is less a problem with translating things for the chameleon as it is with the ToM truenaming system as a whole. The big issue is that as your level increases, the gap between uselessness and absurd power diminishes rapidly; the balance on truenaming is extremely fine.
Let's see...Eldritch Blast should be roughly 2d6 per three levels, and your quantity of invocations (which would go up to Greater) should be similarly limited. Though you'll want to stagger the gaps in the two.
Incarnum Focus doesn't really require much, given the grab-everything nature of chameleon foci. This should probably grant access to all soulmelds, but only go up to six soulmelds, three chakra binds, and perhaps 14 essentia. Additionally, you'll only want to grant the first two tiers of chakra binds. MAYBE one of either throat or waist (chosen when you take the focus) at 10th level, but that's pushing it.
Auras are reasonable to grant as Mimicry abilities.
Spell channeling is a bit iffy as a single-use effect. (Honestly, so was Turn Undead, and that's an official use of the ability.) I don't know how I'd alter this; perhaps you should just leave this one out.
Wild Surge? Definitely not good enough for Mimicry. Unless you allow it to be "activated" for a minute; then it's probably fine. You'll of course want to include Psychic Enervation with it to compensate. (Psy Enervation is technically a separate class feature.)
