| Solik08-14-05, 05:57 PM | Songmaiden of Selune It is not uncommon for the churches of Faerun to employ the talents of singers and musicians as part of their rituals and worship. Such individuals are normally simply talented members of the church, happy to use their gifts in praise of the deity. In the church of Selune, however, they are reserved a sacred and prestigious place. It began with the Mystery of the Night, the holy ritual performed by Selune's high priest, seeking the goddess's blessing of moonfire. Selune felt that her worshippers had begun to take the moonfire for granted, using it as if it were a substance of no consequence brewed by the local alchemist. After several rituals failed to produce moonfire, the church began to grow desperate, trying various methods to regain the goddess's favor. It was a song that finally appealed to the Moonmaiden, a beautiful piece that captured the essence of the night sky when filled with Selune's subtle brilliance. The moonfire flowed in abundance, and the discipline of the Songmaiden was born. Today, Songmaidens are among the most revered of Selune's followers, their enchanting music soothing the souls of the faithful. Master musicians of Our Lady of Silver, Songmaidens of Selune summon forth divine power through their music. Sacrificing the flexibility of the bard for focus on divine spellcasting and unique songmagic, the Songmaiden is the epitome of the divine bard (Unearthed Arcana variant). It is also well suited for more standard cleric / bard multiclass characters. Although designed for the faith of Selune, this prestige class can be easily adapted for any deity focused on the moon. Requirements To qualify to become a Songmaiden of Selune, a character must fulfill all the following criteria: Deity: Selune Alignment: Chaotic Good Gender: Female Skills: Concentration 6, Knowledge (religion) 10, Perform (any two musical) 10, Speak Language (Celestial), Spellcraft 6 Spells: Must be able to cast 2nd level divine spells Abilities: Bardic music ability Game Rule Information Hit Die: d6 Proficiencies: The Songmaiden gains no additional weapon or armor proficiencies. Class Skills: Bluff, Concentration, Craft, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Heal, Knowledge (arcana), Knowledge (history), Knowledge (local), Knowledge (religion), Knowledge (the planes), Perform, Profession, Sense Motive, Speak Language, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device Skill Points per Level: 4 + Int modifier Class Features BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities 1. +0 +0 +0 +2 Bardic Knowledge, Bardic Music, Extra Domain 2. +1 +0 +0 +3 Lunar Kinship 3. +2 +1 +1 +3 4. +3 +1 +1 +4 Song of Channeling 5. +3 +1 +1 +4 6. +4 +2 +2 +5 Moonsong 7. +5 +2 +2 +5 8. +6 +2 +2 +6 9. +6 +3 +3 +6 10.+7 +3 +3 +7 Song of Recall Spells per Day: NOTE - The following spells per day are from levels 3 (far left) to 8 (far right). This is similar to the Sublime Chord, which gains spells per day from levels 4 to 9 (see Complete Arcane). 1: 2 1 - - - - 2: 2 2 - - - - 3: 3 2 1 - - - 4: 3 3 2 - - - 5: 3 3 2 1 - - 6: 4 3 3 2 - - 7: 4 4 3 2 1 - 8: 4 4 3 3 2 - 9: 4 4 4 3 2 1 10: 5 4 4 3 3 2 Spells Known: 1: 3 1 - - - - 2: 4 2 - - - - 3: 4 2 1 - - - 4: 4 3 2 - - - 5: 4 3 2 1 - - 6: 4 4 3 2 - - 7: 4 4 3 2 1 - 8: 4 4 4 3 2 - 9: 4 4 4 3 2 1 10: 4 4 4 4 3 2 Bardic Music: A Songmaiden of Selune adds her class level to her bard level for determining how often she can use her bardic abilities. In addition, her Songmaiden levels stack with her bard levels for determining the bonus granted by the inspire courage song. Songmaidens do not gain any new songs from the standard bard list in this manner; to obtain those songs, the Songmaiden must gain standard bard levels. Spells per Day / Spells Known: A Songmaiden of Selune’s caster level is equivalent to her Songmaiden class level plus her base divine spellcasting class level. Only one base class can be used in this manner; the Songmaiden must choose this class when taking the first level of this prestige class. The Songmaiden’s spells per day and spells known, however, are derived from the Songmaiden list; she gains no additional spells from her base class. She casts these spells spontaneously. As with the divine bard, the Songmaiden must have a Wis score of 10 + the spell level in order to be able to cast the spell; however, her Charisma modifier is used for determining spell DC. The Songmaiden can exchange spells known as can the bard; she adds her Songmaiden level to her bardic level to determine on which levels she can do this. Extra Domain: A Songmaiden of Selune is granted access to the Moon domain. This functions exactly as normal domains for clerics. If the Songmaiden already has access to the Moon domain, then she must choose one new domain from Selune’s list. The Moon domain is detailed in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. Lunar Kinship (Ex): When the moon is full, a Songmaiden of second level or higher is considered to be one caster level higher in terms of spell power when casting divine spells from her Songmaiden list or her divine base class. In addition, the Songmaiden gains one additional song per day and one additional domain spell per day at any level she can cast. However, when there is no moon, the Songmaiden is considered to be one caster level lower and cannot cast spells from the Moon domain as domain spells (but may freely cast them with standard spell slots, if able). This effect functions for three days and nights when the moon is full and for three days and nights when there is no moon. Lunar Kinship only functions on the material plane, but it works even if the Songmaiden is underground or otherwise barred from viewing the sky. Song of Channeling (Su): A Songmaiden of level 4 or higher with at least 12 ranks in Perform gains the ability to channel positive energy through her music. This functions similar to Turn Undead, except the Songmaiden uses half her ranks in her Perform skill instead of class level for turning check and damage. The Songmaiden can be considered to possess the Turn Undead ability for feat selections and prerequisites (although any abilities that require daily usages of Turn Undead instead require usages of this song, unless the Songmaiden also has the ability to Turn Undead normally and wishes to use that instead). Using Song Channel requires two daily uses of bardic magic. Moonsong (Su): A Songmaiden of Selune of level 6 or higher with at least 14 ranks in Perform gains the ability to use the Moonsong. This song grants the Songmaiden the ability to “hold” the forms of shapeshifting creatures that can hear the song (i.e. prevent from shapeshifting into a new form). In addition, the Songmaiden can prevent unwanted shapeshifting in her allies. This song works on both natural (lycanthropic, etc) shapeshifting as well as magical (polymorph, etc) shapeshifting. The Songmaiden must declare when beginning the song which creatures whose forms she will hold / preserve. Each creature targetted in this manner requires one daily use of bardic magic. Creatures may resist the Moonsong with a Will save, the DC being equivalent to the Perform check result. The effect lasts as long as she concentrates, to a maximum of 1 minute per Songmaiden level. Song of Recall (Su): A Songmaiden of level 10 with at least 18 ranks in Perform gains the ability to use Song of Recall. A Songmaiden must play this song for a full minute to gain its effect. The song allows the Songmaiden to regain one divine spell or spell slot expended at a cost of 1 daily use of bardic music per spell level (orisons require 1 daily use of bardic music). Domain slots cannot be regained in this manner. Spell List Spells denoted with an asterisk are new spells (see below). Touching a creature or object in this manner functions as an application of moonfire salve (Magic of Faerun; for 3.5, treat the greater mage hand effect as a standard mage hand). Use the caster level of this spell instead of the caster level of moonfire salve. Targetted dispel effects allow saving throws as normal. Summon Moonfire, Greater Conjuration Level: SnM 8 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25ft + 5ft / 2 levels) Targets: One creature per two caster levels (round down), no two of which can be more than 30ft apart Duration: 1 hour / level Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless) Spell Resistance: Yes Upon casting this spell, a torrent of brilliant moonfire bathes the caster and nearby allies, granting each of them the full range of its powers. Each target gains darkvision 60ft, flight (as fly of equal caster level), and the use of mage hand at will. In addition, each target is healed for 1d8+5 points from channeled positive energy. Adaptation This prestige class can be easily adapted to fit any deity focused on the moon. Adjust alignment requirements if necessary based on the ethos of the new deity. Also consider dropping the gender requirement if the deity does not focus on females; a male character with this prestige class would be considered a Songweaver. If your campaign world has no such deity, consider making one of the moons itself a holy creation of great power, capable of granting power to those who have learned to reach out to it. Rules already exist for clerics without deities, so it should be easy to fit right in. In this case, you can remove the alignment requirement entirely, although consider leaving the gender requirement, as folklore is rich with tales of women and the moon. If Lunar Kinship is a bit too much for your group to keep track of, consider rewriting the ability so that the Songmaiden receives the benefits when she can observe the night sky, but suffers the penalty if a night passes and she is unable to view the sky (and suffers this penalty each night until she views the sky, at which time she receives the bonus instead). This weakens the Songmaiden on extended underground campaigns, such as through the Underdark, so use this variant with caution. Another option could be to grant the bonus at night and the penalty during the day, but this would weaken the Songmaiden in any group that isn't nocturnal. |
| Keru Shiri08-15-05, 02:59 AM | Looks like a solid prestige class. You could've copied out of a forgotten realms book and i wouldn't have known it. At first glance I wouldn't change a thing (as of posting it's late at night), but later on i'll look through it and give a more detailed opinion. Nice work though. |
| Solik08-16-05, 09:57 PM | Hey, thanks ^_^ Nice to know my freshman effort isn't a total disaster. Let me know if you notice any potential problems. |
| RobertJ08-16-05, 10:18 PM | -Extra Domain -- How does this interact with Bardic spellcasting? Do the Bards automatically know the domain spells, and do they get an extra spell to cast per day from their domain(s)? It looks pretty good to me. Probably a bit powerful compared to other Bardic Prestige classes, but, well, most straight-Bard PrCs are horrible. The songs aren't as good as a straight Bard, although the 10th level one is pretty powerful. That ability's the only place I see a potential problem. Spellcasting is good, strict requirements and other tradeoffs like skillpoints and saves. |
| Solik08-16-05, 10:24 PM | They get an extra domain spell slot for applicable levels. For instance, a Songmaiden of Selune 5 that was capable of casting level 3 divine spells before joining the PrC gets the domain slot for levels 1-6. If the Songmaiden was a cleric/bard, they do not get an additional domain slot (except when they get access to new spell levels); only the new domain spells (and the domain power, which is Turn Lycanthrope). The domain spell is not cast from the standard list of spells/day. Guess I wasn't too clear on that. Apologies. |
| Solik11-06-06, 11:18 PM | Updated with the UnCon entry, and added a few notes based on feedback received from the judging. (wow, has it really been over a year since I first made this?) |
