The Incanter

Many devote their lives to the study of magic, or the service of the Gods; it is an accepted and potent path to power. Some very few, however, come to magic from the opposite end; the study and accumulation of knowledge leads eventually to an investigation into the purely physical and somatic components of the craft. By virtue of magic innate to their beings, and by carefully watching and then mimicking the prayers or incantations that they have observed, these few can generate the effect of the spells without tying themselves to the source of the magic itself.

Requirements:
Skills: Spellcraft 8 Ranks, Knowledge (Arcana) 8 ranks, Knowledge (Religion) 8 ranks
Feats: Skill Focus (Spellcraft), Able Learner
Special: Must be able to cast at least one spell as a spell-like ability (Such as the Halfling racial ability or feats such as Necropolis Born from Complete Arcane), May not have the ability to cast spells through class levels (s)he possesses (For example, a Hexblade would be eligible for this class until (s)he gains spellcasting as a class feature at 4th level).

Class Skills:
The Incanter’s class skills are: Spellcraft, Knowledge (all taken individually), Concentration, Profession, and Gather Information.
Skill Points per Level: 2 + Int modifier.

Class Features:
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: An Incanter gains no weapon or armor proficiency. In fact, wearing armor of any kind restricts the complex movements an Incanter must imitate to make his/her magic.

Spells per Day: An Incanter may cast any spell (s)he knows a number of times per day indicated by the above table. An Incanter must have an Int score of at least 10+ the spell’s level to cast the spell; An Incanter’s Cha score determines how difficult an Incanter’s spells are to resist and how many bonus spells they gain. An Incanter casts spontaneously (see Incanting, below, for more details).
The Incanter’s Spell List encompasses all divine and arcane spells, but not any psionic powers or invocations. Any spell cast by an Incanter, regardless of its origin, is cast as an arcane spell of the same level.

Incanting: The Incanter can mimic the verbal, somatic, and material components of any spell he or she sees so completely that just by performing those motions and saying those words (s)he can gain an effect identical to that evoked when (s)he first saw the spell cast. An Incanter may know a number of spells equal to his/her class level multiplied by 4; these spells may be of any level distribution among the spell levels (s)he has access to.
Incanting, however, imposes several difficulties upon the caster. First of all, an Incanter may only learn spells by observing their casting. Once a spell is learned, an Incanter may not unlearn it except so that (s)he may learn another (i.e., when the Incanter’s spells known allotment is full and (s)he is able to successfully learn a new spell from observation). An Incanter may never voluntarily apply the effects of a metamagic feat to any spell (s)he casts; however, through class features (s)he gains as (s)he levels, (s)he may become capable of casting spells that (s)he observes cast with metamagic feats applied to them.
To learn a spell, an Incanter must first make a successful Spellcraft check (as normal) to identify a spell that is being cast in his/her vicinity. If the check is successful, the Incanter must then pass (unaided) a Spellcraft check with a DC equal to the 20+ the observed spell’s level. If successful, the Incanter may learn the spell immediately, and may cast it whenever (s)he pleases, beginning on his/her next turn.
If an Incanter ever attempts to learn a spell outside his/her casting capability, or one affected by a metamagic feat (except where permission is specifically given as a class feature), the Spellcraft check to learn that spell automatically fails.

Magical Study: When an Incanter gains access to a new spell level, (s)he may choose one spell of that level and add it to his/her spells known list.

Metamagical Incanting: An Incanter may now cast spells that have metamagical feats applied to them, but only if the spell level adjustment for that feat is +0 or +1. An Incanter still may not apply Metamagic feats voluntarily; (s)he must learn the enhanced spell by observing its casting as normal. If an Incanter successfully learns the spell, it occupies a distinct spot on his/her spell list, even if the Incanter already knows the unenhanced version of the spell. For example, a Burning Hands spell and one affected by Sculpt Spell are separate spells for the purposes of the Incanter’s Spells Known list. An Incanter may never learn a spell enhanced by a Sudden feat.

Greater Metamagical Incanting: An Invoker may now learn spells with a +2 maximum spell level adjustment. This ability otherwise follows all rules of Metamagical Incanting.

Empower Casting: An Incanter of 8th level knows how to make his/her spells count. Whenever an Incanter casts a spell, (s)he may choose any one numeric variable (damage, duration, resist DC, etc.) and apply the spell’s level as an insight bonus to that variable.

True Incanting: An Incanter of 10th level has mastered the art of distinguishing spells themselves from the feats empowering them. If an Incanter knows a spell with a metamagic feat applied to it, (s)he may apply that feat to any other spell (s)he knows (with the standard level adjustments).

P.S.: Could someone point me towards a tutorial for your guys' fancy-pants code wrapping thing so I don;t have to use funny formatting trick to get spaces on my tables? Thanks.

No suggestions or comments at all? Sad face.

I'll respond to yours if you respond to my Necro one :-p

Seems pretty good though I'm not sure which class would really wanna aim for it.

I'd have the restriction that they can't learn any spell that they view being cast with the Still/Silent spell metamagic feats.

This class can basically learn any spell in the game, so 5th level spells might be a tad too powerful.

Sounds very Kakashi-esque

What he said^

I was just going to say that you shoudl perhaps clean it up a bit, with some bold font and tables. Makes it easier on the eyes. I like the idea...but have you read the Blue Mage class I believe it is? It's very similar, so you might want to take a look. Good job on what's here though : )

Nah, essentially there's the problem of having a separate progression, giving up to 5 lvl spells for 10 levels of weak BAB. Unless the incanting is separate from the spellcasting, it's not that special. Also, it might be good to have some mechanism determining whether observing a spell is successful, like a spellcraft/spot check rather than an automatic success.

The_Shaman: Actually, there are two separate checks involved in learning a spell for this class: the first is to identify it, and the second (at a higher DC) is to learn it. I'm sure it's in there, but the DC to learn a spell once it's been ID'd by Spellcraft is a second Spellcraft at 20+ the spell's level. Do you all think that's a fair call, or should I Increase/decrease it?
As far as incanting is concerned, it's derived from the word incantation; the idea is that this class mimics the movements and words of the spell he's seen cast; this is why they can't separate metamagic feats from the spells themselves until 10th level.

Garble: I can bold some stuff, but I don't know how to do the tables. Someone pruned out the tutorial, and I don't know how to make them myself.
