| Avenger31409-01-07, 11:11 PM | Hi all, This is my first prestige class to be posted on these boards. I'm skipping the majority of the flavor text (it's largely self evident for this prestige class) and focusing on the bare-bones mechanics, as well as some creator's notes for balance. Mystic Artificter Requirements: To become a mystic artificer, a character must fulfill all the following criteria: Skills: Spellcraft 10 ranks, craft (any) 10 ranks Feats: Any 2 item creation feats, and any metamagic feat Hit die: d4 Good Will Saves Poor BaB Class Skills The mystic artificer‘s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (any), knowledge (arcana), knowledge (religion), Concentration, profession (any), search, spellcraft, and use magic device Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + int modifier Weapon and armor proficiency You gain no new proficency with any weapon, armor, or shields. New spells gained at every level except first Class abilities: Favored Craft: On attaining first level at this prestige class, choose an item creation feat that you possess. Creating this type of magic items now requires 10% less gold and XP. On attaining fifth level, you select a second type of magic item to get a 10% discount. On attaining 10th level, you select a third type of magic item to get a 10% discount. In addition, each time you add a new favored item feat, you may apply a further 10% discount to one of your favored items. For example, at tenth level, you may have 3 favored item creation feats at a 20% discount, or two at 30% and one at 10%, or one at 40% and two at 10%. Detect Magic Traps: At first level, you may search for magic traps just like a rogue does. You apply a +2 competence bonus to the search check. Note that this ability does not apply to regular checks. Bonus Item Creation Feat: You gain a bonus item creation feat for which you meet the pre-requisites at the indicated level. Bonus Item Creation Feat: At second level, and again at 8th level, the Mystic Artificer gains a bonus item creation feat for which he meets the pre-requisites. Item Defense: On attaining third level, you gain a +2 competence bonus on all saving throws against spells and spell-like effects generated by magic items. Honed Imbuing: At seventh level, if you choose to apply a metamagic feat to an item you create, the metamagic feat’s level adjustment is reduced by one (minimum is the original spell level). Thus, with this feat, a wand of maximized magic missiles counts as a third level spell, while a potion of extended bear’s strength is a second level potion. Quick summary-by level: Level 1: First favored craft, Detect Magic Traps Level 2: +1 spell, bonus item creation feat Level 3: +1 spell, item defense Level 4: +1 spell Level 5: +1 spell, Second favored craft, Level 6: +1 spell Level 7: +1 spell, honed imbuing Level 8: +1 spell, , bonus item creation feat Level 9: +1 spell Level 10: +1 spell, Third Favored Craft Designer's notes: This is heavily geared towards arcane casters. Wizards are particularly likely to go into it. The 'favored craft' is intended to be very similar to a ranger's favored enemy mechanic. Does the 'detect magic traps' fit into the flavor of the class? My argument is that he's made so many magic items, he's adept at spotting them. I assume it's not too overpowered. Advice would be appreciated. I'm very amenable to dumping abilities, adding new ones in if they fit, or changing the spell progrssion in the name of balance. I'm looking forward to comments on my first prestige class :) |

It also needs some more things, maybe add all the repair spells to your spellbook/spells known automatically. Also, give him spellcasting at each level. It's fair. I'm confused about item defense. I think you mean saving throws that your items make, like if targeted by spells or rust effects etc. Magic traps is fine, but should be given earlier. |
| Riven21309-03-07, 12:41 PM | Item Defense is exactly as he put it; the Mystic Artificer, himself (or herself), gains a +2 bonus on Saves vs. the effects generated by magic items. I would perhaps word it more clearly; specifically, I'd mention that it doesn't apply to artifacts, which I'd feel are a bit beyond the average mortal's scope. That being said... I rather like the idea of the artificer being able to empower the Saves of the items he makes, after a certain point. I think it makes a lot of sense. I disagree with dropping the metamagic requirement. The class presents a special ability concerning the imbuing of items with metamagical enhancements, and any serious wizard would learn a metamagic feat at some point regardless. That's my feeling, anyway. Prestige classes are supposed to keep "fluff" in mind; general ideas of roleplaying, setting background, etc., far moreso than core classes do. I agree, in the area of new spells; every level. I would also move the magical traps detection to an earlier level. |
| Avenger31409-07-07, 06:49 PM | Thanks for your comments, all!! I've incorporated some changes. Detect Magic Traps is granted at an earlier level. Spell progression is gained at every level except first (Curse you, dippers! The special abilities are enough). Honed Imbuing is a bit later since it is rather powerful. I've spaced the abilities around a bit: There are now two item creation feats. This is now a 9/10 spellcasting progression, with several special abilities granted. I fear it's a bit overpowered, but there are two mitigating factors: 1) Very specific requirements 2) Only one ability (save vs. item effects) is a combat feat |
