| Banatine08-06-07, 02:15 PM | Would the Jade Phoenix Mage be overpowered if you removed all of the martial adept side of it? Because I thought that, with a little reflavouring, it could be a very nice prestige class for the Duskblade (the abilities do dovetail nicely.) So, what do you think? Thanks in advance! :D |
| Callix08-06-07, 05:12 PM | Would a cleric be overpowered if it didn't cast any spells? No. But that's not the point. JPM is an attempt to hybridise the two systems of arcane magic and the Sublime Way. So, while it would not be a crazy awesome class, it would not really have a point. Also, there are some crazy roleplay restrictions on JPM. You are, and have been since before you were born, dedicated to fighting evil absolutely. |
| Jaxgaret08-06-07, 08:30 PM | Would the Jade Phoenix Mage be overpowered if you removed all of the martial adept side of it? What exactly do you mean by this? Are you talking about removing the PrC's requirements? Because I thought that, with a little reflavouring, it could be a very nice prestige class for the Duskblade (the abilities do dovetail nicely.) So, what do you think? Thanks in advance! :D Yes, yes it would make a nice prestige class for a Duskblade. Why do you desire to remove the Sublime Way basis of the class? |
| Banatine08-07-07, 06:59 AM | Yes, I was talking about was removing the Sublime Way from it (i.e. the maneuver requirements and the maneuvers gained, but not neccessarily the class feature stances.) I wanted to remove the Sublime Way because one of my players asked if he could use the class without the Sublime Way (because he find the ToB far too confusing ) and i told him i would have to think about it. Which is why I decided to ask the boards. |
| AllisterH08-07-07, 07:11 AM | Would he still need to know a martial stance as part of the requirement given the overlay feature of the JPM stances? I'd assume you would change the strikes to melee attacks? If so, you still have a decent PrC class but it becomes less attractive from the POV of optimization. If you're happy with that then yea, the class works but not as attractive from a gish perspective. |

Without them, he might be better off playing an abjurant champion or something like that. |
| Banatine08-07-07, 11:59 AM | I had intended to make some new flavour for the class (and change the name), and change the prerequisites to be more of a fighter-mage gish. He wants to play a duskblade, and he really likes the abilities of this particular prestige class. What I was thinking of giving him was along the lines of this: Prerequisites Base Attack Bonus: +6 Skills: Concentration 9 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 6 ranks. Spells: Ability to cast 3rd level arcane spells. The Master Battlecaster Dit Die: d6 Level BaB Fort Ref Will Special Spellcasting 1st +0 +2 +0 +0 Arcane wrath - 2nd +1 +3 +0 +0 Mystic phoenix stance +1 level arcane spellcasting class 3rd +2 +3 +1 +1 Empowering strike +1 level arcane spellcasting class 4th +3 +4 +1 +1 Quickening strike +1 level arcane spellcasting class 5th +3 +4 +1 +1 Firebird stance +1 level arcane spellcasting class Is that fair? |

Seems fine to me as a custom Duskblade PrC. You could even give it full BAB. |
| Banatine08-08-07, 06:30 AM | Oops, I forgot about the BAB. The Master Battlecaster Dit Die: d6 Level BaB Fort Ref Will Special Spellcasting 1st +1 +2 +0 +0 Arcane wrath - 2nd +2 +3 +0 +0 Mystic phoenix stance +1 level arcane spellcasting class 3rd +3 +3 +1 +1 Empowering strike +1 level arcane spellcasting class 4th +4 +4 +1 +1 Quickening strike +1 level arcane spellcasting class 5th +5 +4 +1 +1 Firebird stance +1 level arcane spellcasting class Would it unbalance the class to give it Arcane Wrath (Full Attack) at 5th level? |
