Nonsensical Reaping Mauler Prereqs? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-15-07, 08:41 PM Er, so one of my players likes the Reaping Mauler PrC a lot, and we were looking at the prereqs together when I realized how absurd they were. Assuming you use a full-BAB class to qualify, you have to make it through five levels with Clever Wrestling and Improved Unarmed Strike, but no Improved Grapple? That's ridiculous. I mean, you could take Improved Grapple in the meantime, but since you get it for free when you take your first Reaping Mauler level, it'd be wasted, as a class feature. And, as a special prerequisite, you have to beat a large-sized creature with your bare hands? Without Improved Grapple? Is there any way around those five levels of 'suck'?

03-15-07, 09:10 PM Me personally I cheat(actually im the DM i cant cheat), I make it so they stack, thats right, you get an additional +4 to grapple checks, Big wup, wanna fight about it.

03-16-07, 11:11 AM There's a little blurb in phb2 about retraining feats and stuff. If you want, you can let him switch out Imp Grapple for something else once he gets the bonus feat. Otherwise, you can just do what Bhaal did.

03-16-07, 03:06 PM I also noticed that discrepancy when I first read it. Though I've never had a PC play a reaping mauler, I would be perfectly fine with giving them an extra +4 to grapple checks instead of Improved Grapple (again).

I agree the setup is kind of lame... I would expect most characters to take Imp Grapple anyway and just forgo the bonus feat.

But something like a horse is large. I don't think a level five fighter would have much trouble beating a horse with his bare hands, much less a level 8 monk.
