| shtroumf03-16-07, 06:33 AM | Hi, One of my player have pick this prestige class, my question is about the Ranged Precision ability, does it's only 1 arrow per round ? for example he normally fire two arrow per round since he his level 5 fighter/1 Order of the bow initiate if he use the ranged precision ability can it fire two arrows or only 1 and do this ability stack with rapid shot or manyshot ? Thanks for any clarification on this Jonathan |
| VonRichthofen03-16-07, 06:55 AM | It is a standard action. Only one shot per round. It is NOT compatible with Shot on the Run, Manyshot or Greater Manyshot. They are all standard actions in their own right. It is impossible to press two standard actions into one, or into a full attack. Thus, you'll either shot two/threee/four/five times per round with a full attack and NO Ranged Precision at all, OR you shot but ONCE per round with Ranged Precision. Sucky Prestige Class! |
| Pyke_Moonshadow03-16-07, 08:52 AM | Sucky Prestige Class! My girlfriend's scout loves it. :D |
| Bopple03-16-07, 10:02 AM | It is the only good thing about Order of the Bow Initiate that Ranged Precision is considered a kind of impromptu sneak-attack. If you have a certain special ability that can be combined with sneak-attack(eg. Silencing Strike of Whisper Gnome). You can deliver it with your bow, without resorting to the conventional methods(invisibility, hiding, or ect) for ranged sneak-attack. |
| VonRichthofen03-16-07, 11:57 AM | My girlfriend's scout loves it. :D Then she's a very ineffective scout. Scouts should make prolific use of Greater Manyshot. Better still, a ranger 17/scout 3 can do 28d6 extra skirmishing damage per round - scout/OotBI sucks like every OotBI build. |

| DrMorganes03-16-07, 12:35 PM | Agreed. Not everyone is concerned with damage output and "optimized characters". It's great if that's the sort of game you enjoy (I know I did when I first started playing D&D), but many gamers find just as much enjoyment in the actual roleplaying aspect. Scout and Order of the Bow Initiate could work very well togehter as a character concept, particularly if the DM actually ties membership in the Prestige Class to an actual Order of the Bow. The DMG does mention that PrCs work best when coupled with an in-game organization teaching the skills related to the class... |
| VonRichthofen03-16-07, 02:25 PM | Nice you consider me a start-up player. :D Actually, I often feel way too old for these boards, thus I am happy to hear the contrary from time to time. Funny you mention the DMG to give authority to your words. After five or maybe ten years of gaming, you'll maybe (or maybe not) realize the DMG and the blah-blah of WotC doesn't count for much. Concerning the background: OotBI screams "monk or fighter" to me - doesn't fit the scout very much flavor-wise from my point of view. |
| navar10003-16-07, 06:42 PM | Order of the Bow is a good two-level dip to be able to use a bow in a threatened area without provoking an AoO. |

Manyshot [General].....Blah blah blah "Regardless of the number of arrows you fire, you apply precision-based damage only once. If you score a critical hit, only the first arrow fired deals critical damage; all others deal regular damage." How do you get past this? |

| FreAkOuTRG03-17-07, 08:48 AM | Order of the Bow is a good two-level dip to be able to use a bow in a threatened area without provoking an AoO. Exotic Weapon Master is better, as long as you have an exotic bow. |
| ZocckCastlestorm03-18-07, 03:15 PM | I like the Order of the Bow. I find that a Fighter is a great base for an archer-type. bast BAB, & Fort Saves. Best access to the Point Blank Shot Feat-tree and can wear any armour. The OBI PrC has the skills that the Fighter needs for an archer-type(but doesn't have) and the BAB is still 1-for-1! The Saves are perfectly complementary to the Fighter's. With Fighter's High Fort Saves + the OBI's High Reflex & Will Saves the Fighter 10/OBI 10 has a +10 Fort/+10 Reflex/+10 Will Saves as well as a 20 BAB and up to 13 Ranks in the very important Spot skill! All in all, the OBI is a very good PrC for archer-types becuase of the Ranged Precision Shot Damage combined with Weapon Specialization(Longbow) and Ranged Weapon Mastery(Piercing) grants a good +4 to hit/+4 to Damage beyond Magic/Attribute bonuses. Added together the Ranged Precision Shot can do 1D8 (Base Longbow Damage)+ 9D8 (Ranged Pre Shot) + Bonuses like Feats/Magic/Attributes = 10D8 + X in one Round! Try to imagine the look on a monster's face as it's DR 10/- is mostly useless against the average such shot! 45 HP's of Damage from the base alone means that 35 + bonuses get through without a problem. I like this idea. Can other Classes/PrC's do better? Yes, but not likely better with a bow.;) |
| Shadowhowler03-21-07, 10:39 PM | It is a standard action. Only one shot per round. It is NOT compatible with Shot on the Run, Manyshot or Greater Manyshot. ??? How is it not compatable with Shot on the Run? I thought all this feat did was break up your move action into two parts, move before the standered/attack action, move after, but not excede your total move. You still only get one standered/attack action, but your movement is broken up. Please explain. |

I thought all this feat did was break up your move action into two parts, move before the standered/attack action, move after, but not excede your total move. You still only get one standered/attack action, but your movement is broken up. Please explain. From the FAQ: Is it possible to use the Shot on the Run feat in conjunction with the Manyshot feat? Some people I know insist that you must use the attack action with Shot on the Run, and they further claim that Manyshot is a standard action and not the attack action. But there isn’t any such thing as an attack action, is there? The text on actions in Chapter 8 of the Player’s Handbook (page 138) describes many kinds of actions (standard actions, move actions, fullround actions, and free actions); it even describes things that are not actions and mentions restricted activity. Nowhere, however, do the rules describe attack actions. So, what’s the correct answer? No, you cannot use Shot on the Run and Manyshot together. It is true that no category of actions is called “attack actions” in the D&D game, but there is an action called attack—it’s the first action described under Standard Actions on page 139 in the Player’s Handbook. It might seem that the folks who say no Manyshot with Shot On the Run are slicing the baloney a little thin, but the letter of the rules is on their side, and so is the intent behind the letter of the rules. The Manyshot feat description could say you fire multiple arrows with the attack action, but it doesn’t. Manyshot is a standard action, not a variant on the attack action (see the feat description on page 97 in the Player’s Handbook). Likewise, the Shot on the Run feat could allow you to make any kind of ranged attack while moving, but it doesn’t. When using Shot on the Run, you must use the attack action with a ranged weapon (see the feat description on page 100 in the Player’s Handbook). This rules out using spells, most magic items, or special standard actions such as the Manyshot feat when making a Shot on the Run. That’s because casting a spell would require the cast a spell action (described on page 140 of the Player’s Handbook), using any magic item except for some use-activated items would require the activate magic item action (Player’s Handbook, page 142), and, as already noted here, using the Manyshot feat is a standard action. Most magic weapons are use activated and don’t require any action to activate at all (see page 213 in the DUNGEON MASTER’s Guide), so you can use these weapons along with the attack action. For example, you could use a +1 longbow or +1 arrow (or both) with the attack action, and thus you also could use these items with Shot on the Run. |
| Shadowhowler03-22-07, 03:42 AM | Actually, I was not talking about Shot on the run and Manyshot working together. I was talking about the OotBI's persicion damage working with shot on the run. Although the FAQ you quoted from DOSE seem to split the hair WAY to thin IMO. |

It can be houseruled any way you want, but them's the rules. |

Sadly, you are correct. :( I went threw and read the entire FAQ your quote came from, and became very sad indeed. Dosn't make much sense to me the way they chose to use the wording of 'attack action' and 'standered' action to nerf this use of the ability. Even using shot on the run with the percision damage from OotBI you only get ONE attack a round. I have seen many other literal interpritations of rules that are MUCH more powerfull then this (Monks Taking Improved Natural Strike comes to mind) Hopefully I can houserule this nerf to the hell it belongs... but I doubt it, since I am new to the group I'm playing in, thus my 15+ years of Gaming/DMing experince has been reset to 0 with these guys. I may have to cry now. |
