Rust Masters

“Yeah, well ... it’s like this. I loved that sword. It was the weapon my grandfather had used to fight in the War of Seven. My father had used it when the Black Knight’s men tried to destroy the village I grew up in.
“And this ... bug just waved its little antennae and I was left holding a bunch of leather covered in rust.
“I was angry and since I had no other weapons I ended up punching the damn thing.
“Still, I have since studied the rust monsters and been ... impressed.
“I’ve read stories of warriors who wouldn’t cower in front of an army, running from a rust monster.
“Legendary shields and cursed armour have all become rust under a rust monster’s gentle touch.
“They truly are fascinating creatures.”
The man stood and help up a sheathed dagger. He carefully drew it from its resting place and showed it to his audience. It steamed as though it was extremely cold.
“I’ve learnt so much from them.”
And he turned the magic dagger to rust.

Rust monsters are among the most feared creatures in the land.
Dragons are scary, but dragons can be fought.
Vampires? Not contest. The right weapons and vampires will die.
But rust monsters are different. They will take your weapon from you, and you will never get it back.
Rust masters are people who have lost something they valued to a rust monster and they have been ... changed by the loss.

Rust Monster ApotheosisClass Features
All of the following are features of the rust master prestige class.
Weapon and Armour Proficiency: Rust masters gain no proficiency with any weapon, armour or shields.
Natural Armour (Ex): At 1st level, a rust master’s skin begins to harden and become a rustier colour. This increases the rust master’s natural armour by +1 and increases it by an additional +1 at 4th level.
Digest Rust (Ex): A rust master is able to consume and gain nourishment from rust. Rust in the amount of a long sword is equivalent to one meal. As the rust master progresses through the class, they will begin to consume rust rather than all other forms of sustenance.
Detect Iron (Su): A rust master gains a lesser form of a rust monster’s metal detection ability. At 2nd level the rust master gains the ability to detect iron within 30 feet. The amount of information revealed depends on how long the rust master studies a particular area.
1st Round: Presence or absence of iron.
2nd Round: Total amount of iron.
3rd Round: Location and size of each iron object.
4th Round: Shapes of each iron object.
This ability can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, one inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.
At 5th level the range of this ability increases to 60 feet.
Rusting Grasp (Su): Starting at 3rd level, a rust master gains an ability similar to the Druid spell of Rusting Grasp, usable twice a day. A rust master takes 1 move action to activate this ability. In all other ways, this ability is identical to the spell.
Rust Monster Apotheosis (Ex): At 5th level, the transformation that started with the rust master’s Natural Armour is complete. The rust master’s type changes to monstrous humanoid. His skin becomes lumpy and changes colour to that of a rust monster. He gains two antennae that sprout from their cheek-bones, just under their eyes, which grants him the rust monster’s Rust special attack. He gains darkvision out to 60 feet if he did not have it already, and his Dexterity score increases by +2.

I was reading the Psionics Handbook and found a monster almost identical to the Rust Monster but instead of rust this monster eats the crystals that psions sometimes rely on.

I'm thinking about another class... but I can't remember the name of the monster! Folagrut or something...

Looks interesting, though as an NPC most PC would hate it.

I believe you just created something even more horrific than the rust monster. The Rust monster with aposable thumbs and intelegence. It'd be fun to play.

I always thought the Rust Monsters to be basically timid scavengers with an insatiable appetite for the scraps left behind by civilised folk. I mean without people around to bring the metal to the surface rust wouldn't really be a viable form of sustenance for an entire species.

However it happened, Rust Monsters thrive because of the wasteful nature of civilisation and I see my class as something akin to a bridge between the misunderstood Rust Monster and humanoids everywhere.

Still, if I met a Rust Master in a game, I doubt I'd be impressed. :)

I love this... it would be so fun to amaze the DM when the BBEG in front of is suddenly rendered helpless, as his weapon is turned to rust.

BUT... I'd give them an ability to turn something into rust at first level, and then have it be usable more times per day as you progress in levels. Like 1/day at first, 2/day at third, and 3/day at fifth?

Thanks for the comment, Xavorin.

The ability to turn metals into rust is quite powerful considering how many people rely on metal in nearly every part of their lives. Giving the Rust Masters that kind of ability at first level seemed overpowered to me even if only usable once a day.

I pictured this class as a simple progression from someone intrigued enough by the Rust Monster's diet to just try some rust and, finding that it didn't do them any harm, kept eating it until they somehow gained the ability to know where rust might be. From there they move onto creating their own food and eventually become part Rust Monster.

May i sugest that you add detect aliminium. Aliminium + iron oxide (rust)= thermite.
If you don't know what thermite is then type "brainiac" + "thermite" into youtube.
You see why that might be a good ability.

Aluminium is more of a modern metal I believe since it has only been able to be refined in commercial qualities for the last century or so.

I'm not sure, however, of the last time I saw a rust monster alchemist running around rubbing its hands together in demented glee and mumbling dire predictions against those that wronged it as a child.
